This is a combined review for the hotel and restaurant. My wife and I stayed here two weeks ago. This is a beautiful old estate with small grounds that has been turned into a hotel. Don't let the "Best Western" designation deter you. It is privately owned and run. Room well appointed. Small court yards, antique filled public rooms. A romantic place on the edge of the old town, just outside the wall.
Note: you have to be in pretty good shape because there are many steps from the street to the lobby, but Toledo in general is not a place for people who are out of shape.
In our view, the dining possibilities in Toledo are very touristy. As such, we ate in the restaurant of the hotel on one of our evenings.
The restaurant includes a large outdoor patio with table cloths, nice china, etc. The service is impeccable and first class. On an evening in the off-season, there were only a few other tables. The one nearest us was a large party of local diners who appeared to be regulars.
We started with gazpacho soup, and this was outstanding. It was a creamy variety topped with a selection of crudités. Definitely recommended.
The specialty of the house is suckling pig, and since we had not had that Spanish specialty on our trip up to that point, it seemed the logical choice. This may or may not have been the best version of that dish, but suffice it to say we never ordered it again. Nothing special. It is quite bony and greasy. At home in South Carolina, we would simply pick it up, but in a fancy restaurant, we felt constrained to attempt eating with a knife and fork. In retrospect, we would have done better with the fish. read more
