Before heading back, I wanted to get a bite to eat as I was very hungry, and the gazpacho on the menu looked many times more appetizing than a greasy McDonald's hamburger. My girlfriend and her friend didn't really want anything, but I convinced them that they should have a snack too and then we would go. So we sat down, I ordered my gazpacho, and my girlfriend and her friend ordered one tapa to split -- I asked them to order more (I was paying anyway) but they didn't want to. Even though you have to pay 2 franks per person to sit there (haven't seen this in a very long time). This small order seemed to upset the waitress even though the restaurant was mostly empty anyway. She continued to express her displeasure at how cheap and worthless we were to the bartender, loud enough for us to hear. We had had a wonderful day but after leaving, my girlfriend was very upset, her day almost ruined because of the inexplicable hostility of the waitress. The gazpacho was actually quite good and the other dishes on the menu looked interesting. And I would have loved to have one of the Swiss wines on the menu if I didn't need to drive for a few hours after that. So it's a real shame that I would never consider returning to this place only because of the astonishing behavior of the staff. I have never encountered this level of rudeness before, especially not at a restaurant with these sorts of prices. It seems especially unwise for such a restaurant to do everything possible to upset and humiliate customers who might otherwise have returned another time to spend more money, as I likely would have. I enjoy nice restaurants, including pricey ones, but this one will never be on my list. Please be aware that if you are spending more money, they'll probably treat you better. But I don't know how I could ever recommend a place that doesn't treat all of its customers with the respect they deserve.

Luckily, mustard was brought out as an accompaniment to the Berner plate, which was the other entree. The mustard at least made the beef somewhat palatable and interesting. The Berner plate was 3-4 types of pork, supposedly local to Bern. Came with boiled potatoes and very boring "sauerkraut" (no sauer). Some meats were good, some were adequate. Would not recommend or return.

They started the meal with bread and a little compliment sample of quinoa, avocado and roasted pepper. My husband had an appetizer ravioli with Matin's suggestion and I had the green salad, we both chose the cod for dinner and it was cooked perfectly, the sweet potato purée was the perfect sweet and savory mix. First warning is that about 30% of the menu is made up of game meats, like venison and pheasant. There were two vegetarian option, 3 beef, and several fish offerings. Second warning is that it was pretty expensive with main dishes costing around 40chf, and appetizers averaging 15chf. It you are still reading this, the food here is simply amazing. They provided a free appetizer of goat cheese and lentils in which the cheese was fluffy and melted in your mouth. We had a baked celery appetizer in which the celery was in delightful wedges that were just the right texture and a wonderful creamy taste. The vegetable risotto was smooth and creamy but not heavy, and the Brussels sprouts were cooked perfectly. I could go on, right down to the bread. Service was also terrific. They even had an English menu for we languages challenged Americans. The wine list was small but had all the key counties represented. My only advice is to avoid the Swiss red. The place was not empty in the least bit, but was so large that such a table would be available. Fortunately, one of the waiters spoke English well and was able to guide two foreigners through the menu. He was very helpful and told us that there were certain things we shouldn't get (not because they were not good, but because he assumed our palates would not be used to them). We settled on getting noodles with meat sauce, apple sauce, and cheese, as one dish, and pork fillets with finely chopped vegetables as the other. Both dishes were rather tasty and gave us a relatively inexpensive foray into Swiss German cuisine. I would totally recommend this place to anybody traveling through Bern. One of my companions had a burger, they didn't ask how he wanted it cooked, and it came well done. The staff was very friendly and fluent in English. I have been to Bern several times, and compared to other restaurants in this price range, I probably wouldn't go back. The service was nice, but it was not speedy. We waited quite a long time before our salads came. We were there on a Tuesday evening around 6:30, so not exactly the peak busy time.
