No reservation made in advance or required at that time of day. Inside was cool with rustic wooden decor and furnishings. Menu contained many of the classic Austrian dishes that we were looking to fill up our stomachs. Portions looked big but it was also nice to find some options that came in smaller plates so we could make sure that we left enough room for one of their desserts. We took a little longer to nail down our meal and we ended up getting some very basic dishes: The small plate of Austrian meatballs were quite tasty with a savory sauce and creamy mashed potatoes. The veal schnitzel was huge and took up more than 3/4 of the plate with a few boiled potatoes. Nice crunch on the outside and juicy veal on the inside but the potatoes were a bit plain. The crowning end to our meal was one of the city's famous desserts, the Salzburg Nockerl. We actually switched from the apple strudel at the last minute so we had to wait a little extra time before the nockerl was served. It's not an easy dessert to make though its main ingredients were eggs, sugar and a little flour. The 3 browned peaks were impressive when served. The raspberry sauce on the bottom provided a sweet add. It was very close to a soufflé with a very airy like texture that melted in the mouth. Well worth the 24.9 Euros charged and the most expensive dessert of our trip. We had great service from the staff and easily accommodate our change our minds on the dessert. We closed our tab at the table and would recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting some good food options.

So we went elsewhere. We went back the next night at an off-hour and while the food was fine, I would have been highly disappointed had we waited in line for 30 minutes, let alone 2 or more hours. This restaurant has a prime location and a strong online reputation. And perhaps our experience was impacted by the fact that we went at an off-hour. Still, there are much better options, with equal character, available across the city. Consider branching out -- and check my other Salzburg reviews for other alternatives.

Only complaint is the service was kind of rude, at least for me I felt like that way. That was not only for this restaurant but almost all restaurants were about the same. I was planning a trip to Chiemsee, and decided which dock to launch from on the basis of where I'd like to have dinner afterwards. Wieninger Keller looked amazing on Yelp, and thus I chose Prien for my departure spot. I came to the Keller around a quarter to 6 in the evening, and asked the waiter at the top of the stairs if the outside garden would be serviced for dinner, as it was a lovely fall day. Now - I'm a native German speaker, and was sure I understood him correctly when he said "absolutely, have a seat wherever you'd like and we'll take care of you." Somehow, it didn't work out that way... My first beer order was taken, and when the waitress came around for my food order, it was just getting to 6PM, so that meant the Wieninger Keller was starting to serve Schweinehaxe. I absolutely *love* the dish, and asked for a soup starter and the hax'n as a main course. The waitress looked at me askance and said that it was a lot of food, to which I asked if the soup was a small bowl, and she agreed, but said that it was going to be a lot of food. I decided to strike the soup and went with just the hax'n, which was a fortunate decision. The portion size is absolutely huge, cooked perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. There was, of course, a knödel alongside, and a veritable mountain of sauerkraut. The picture I attached just does not do the fantastic food justice. So - why 3 stars? Because at the time my food arrived, I asked the waitress for another beer and another water. I see another table get their food served, and then don't see any wait staff. After half an hour, I see another couple sit down outside, and watch and wait for any staff to appear. Finally, they go downstairs out of frustration. Only then does the waitress finally come upstairs with my beer, 45 minutes after having served me, with the statement "Yeah - we got a bit busy downstairs." I tell her that I need the bill, and she throws me attitude about whether or not I still wanted the beer, which I remind her I'd wanted 45 minutes ago, but that I now needed to go. I chose not to make a big deal out of it, but the attitude of the staff left a lot to be desired. Long story short - Wieninger Keller has absolutely exceptional food. What they don't have is friendly or even interested staff. If you're going to come here, sit downstairs where you can at least have a passing chance to grabbing someone if you need something.

Every Austrian city that relies on…read moretourism has a selection of various restaurants serving the same (nearly identical!) selection of traditional Austrian and Tyrolean favorites. You know the menu before you even see it. Anich is, in my opinion, the very best of them all. Be aware that the food is HEAVY and served in large portions. If you order one of the classic popular meat dishes (roast pork, schnitzel, goulash, etc) you should either be very hungry, prepared to share, or willing to ask for a takeout box. It's a ton of food and it's all stellar. I'm trying and failing to think of something we ordered there that was less than delicious and I can't. The service was not especially fast but I don't mark this kind of restaurant down for that because the meal is supposed to be a slow one. The local wine selection is excellent as is the beer. During a very crowded time you may be asked to share a large table with strangers or so we heard, but in my visits I never saw this happen. It was winter. Summer may be a different story. The building is lovely as are the several dining rooms. If you're looking for a light meal go elsewhere. If you want to be stuffed with dumplings, meat, gravy, and all that great stuff don't go elsewhere.
