Not sure why, but this place has gone way downhill since we were here two years ago. We often stay at the hotel here when driving between the US and Jalisco, so it's been convenient to eat here.
First of all, the waitress didn't seem to understand me despite me being fairly decent with Spanish after living in Mexico for two years and taking twice-weekly Spanish classes for almost three. I pointed to the house special drink, described as "vino tinto, blanco, o rosa con fruta de temporada" and ordered that with vino tinto. She came back with what appeared and tasted like just red wine. When she returned with my husband's beer, I asked her if my wine contained the "fruta temporada;" she said no, it was just red wine and it was the other drink (house special) that had fruit. I stated that that's what I had ordered. Then another waiter appeared and he corrected the situation. The waitress brought my correct drink, and asked "Algo más?" I said yes, we would like the guacamole and pointed to it on the menu. She repeated, "Guacamole?" I said yes, and asked if it came with chips. She said, "Totopos," which are a type of chips, so I said we would like the guacamole to share. Well, about a half hour went by without any guacamole or anyone coming over, so I turned in my chair to face where the waitress was sitting behind the bar looking at something, perhaps her phone, and the waiter caught me looking and came over. I told him we had already ordered guacamole and asked if it was ready yet. He went and spoke to the waitress; when he returned he said that we hadn't ordered guacamole. I recounted to him what I wrote above, including me pointing to the menu item and her repeating it. He went over to the kitchen, and we had that guacamole in less than two minutes.
After we finished off the guac -- which was average in my book -- the waiter returned and we ordered our dinners. I ordered the seafood bisque, which I'd had there before and remembered being very bisque-y and flavorful but with few pieces of seafood, which sounded good since I was kind of full. Instead, I received a huge bowl with tons of seafood in a clearish broth. That may sound wonderful, but the chunks of octopus were soft and mushy, the slices of squid were as chewy as rubber bands, and the shrimp were likely the same ones they use for shrimp cocktail. I guess even when you're across the street from the ocean, seafood's a gamble.
Needless to say, we won't be eating here again, and will probably also stay elsewhere in the future so we can have other food options. read more
