Saint-Louis-de-France is the neighbourhood I grew up in, and this particular Ashton location has not changed since 1997. Hence the nostalgia. I have actually never eaten anything but poutine at Ashton. It's not a fancy place, so the only toppings available are hot-dog, Dulton (grounded meat), extra cheese/sauce and whatnot. I suppose that if I was more objective, I would say fries are average and taste a bit oily (they recently started using smaller ones to get more crisp, but I'm not sure I agree on the decision). The cheese is proper (squeaky = fresh). The gravy is great, but many non-locals are not used to how thin it is. In fact, it should probably be called "sauce" (it's meant to soak the fries). So, Ashton is basically the most endearing comfort food for locals, and just generic fast-food for many outsiders. I call it my own favorite, but it also made my quest for poutine very difficult in Montreal... Tip: In winter, there's rebate if temperature fall lower than -20'C. So -34'C means 30% rebate.

Most experiences with restaurants are mixes of good and bad. Very few have been polarizing for me. Onto the review. It's no secret I love "la belle province," "la regione de la capitale," and "Ville-Marie et alentours." (Translation, in order: Quebec, Quebec City and its environs, and Montreal and its environs.) And, while I eat at places to try local, regional cuisine at acceptable prices, such as in Quebec's Old Town where the good food they make is the order of the day, I seem to have ended up at this McDonald's on every trip here for at least one meal. Part of that is that I have tended to stay out in the western suburbs, around Sainte-Foy, for the better price-quality rapport of the lodging. And, it turns out I have some photos of this Mickey D's. This McDonald's is where, west of the historical area and the old, elegant stone townhomes, the Grand-Allee thoroughfare becomes a wider boulevard near Laval University, the big shopping centers, and its approach to the autoroutes near the big bridges over the Saint Lawrence River. This McDonald's has a nicely sized parking lot, a drive through, an outdoor covered patio, and a capacious indoor eating area. While it's true that the employees have not been particularly enthusiastic - usually because it's always busy - they do their jobs correctly and the food is prepared fairly quickly - sans sourire. The food is standard, true to form McDonald's fare and, even though I don't eat them very often, that Big Mac and Filet-O-Fish sandwich I liked so much as a kid still call every now and then. I have eaten breakfast here but, more often, I've ordered food that is eaten in the late afternoon or evenings. The prices are standard, too. Mostly, I like the vibe of this McDonald's on Boulevard Laurier. Located on a grand boulevard in an edge city type environment, the restaurant is spacious, clean, airy, and has big picture windows looking out to the parking area and Blvd. Laurier ... if you find a seat there. The bathrooms have also been clean. There are McDonald's right in the historic center but, of the suburban ones, this is the one I've found the most effortless to patronize.
