Griechische Taverne - Griechischer Kaffee

Greek bonds may be risky but the food at the Griechishe Taverna is a decent bet…read more It's an old-world family experience from the moment you step through the drapes at the entrance. You feel like you're in a fisherman's living room. Wooden walls and kitsch abound. The 70's green tile in the bathroom sums it up. It's very small and it fills up on the weekends so call ahead. Griechische Taverna has an odd menu. There are as many appetizers as main dishes. I love appetizers, so that's not a bad thing. Nothing ever jumps out at me, screaming my name though when it comes to the main courses. For example: marinated lamb baked in paper with oven potatoes (no vegetables). It's just a little flat. The seafood menu has a few items like fried calamari with rice and vegetables. I think they would be well served to add a little description. The fried calamari, by the way, is just ok. A must try, however, is the seafood platter. It's supposed to be for 2 people but it would satiate a small crew. It's like 4 kinds of fish, pan-fried, a couple of shell-on prawns and some calamari with fresh lemon wedges. I like to pour some of their Greek olive oil all over it. The souvlaki with french fries and tzatziki also looked good. The appetizers are always appetizing. How can you go wrong with a Greek farmer salad - fresh tomato, onion, cucumber, olives and a good chunk of feta on top? The taramosalata (fish roe and potato dip) is delicious with pita. The saganaki, disappointingly, was not floured and fried. It was warmed feta over a chunky tomato olive ragu. It was good but not what I know as saganaki. Next time, I 'm going to try the halloumi, a grilled soft cheese, milder than feta. They have Mythos (Greek beer) and retsina (Greek white wine flavored with tree sap... ok, "pine resin"). Both delicious. You also get a shot of ouzo on the house as a warm Greek welcome. The service is top-notch due to the taverna's small size and that the owner is the main man. They're always nice and attentive. I would say the prices are reasonable (24 - 34 mains). I keep making my way back, because it's always a savory experience and quite authentic.

It's an easy going, cosy place at a moderate price and a nice change from the usual places on Seefeldstrasse with the fashionistas and braying expats. Food decent although not out of this world, simple and the sort of thing you would expect in a standard Greek taverna. I will be going back.

Unfortunately not cooked to order (nobody bothered to ask) and it seemed to be one of those frozen patties from the grocery store. The service was nice. Visit, Saturday during the day! We are a party of three! Restaurant had very few other guests. We waited a very long time for server who kept passing us and disappearing, finally we stopped her and she was a bit annoyed by that. The special drink offered as there special was not available. I was told this after another long wait. Finally food, burger and Fries, for this price nothing special. Just overall did not feel welcome 2nd visit: party of three, wings, on all you can eat wing night. Wings were tasty however the wait was long. Price per value not bad. Final visit: party of four. Early dinner. Restaurant pretty busy. Seated at a table that was not ready, silverware, napkins, glasses missing. Server was super stressed from beginning and overwhelmed. During drink order we pointed out that some items are missing and were dismissed. No problem No drinks came. Server eventually came back for food order, mentioned the missing drinks, placed order! Three out four drinks arrive. Later two meals arrive. Could tell server was super stressed maybe new? No problem. Looked around saw some unhappy faces some waiting for there check. Two meals no problem except no utensils. One meal fajitas no wraps, server promised to be back with everything: missing utensils etc., drink, missing meal and the wraps. Another server brought in two trips what was missing and seamed very displeased; with whom I do not know? Unfortunately my meal (that was last) was inedible way to much salt. I mentioned this! Server walked away from me without a word. I called after saying it's ok it may be just me (others tried my meal and agreed with me) still no problem I just did not know what the server meant to do, since he just walked away. I got up and found the waiter by the bar and said it's ok I don't want anything else he can remove it from bill. He told me to go sit down. I did. Told my table that I was done with this place! I was a server also in our own family restaurant. I understand being stressed/overwhelmed or new! But I also know to be honest to guests and communicate! So bad service can be improved by telling guests, hey I'm new thanks for the patience or sorry I'm slammed it's going to take a while even a hey I'm having a rough day bare with me. Instead nothing. After waiting and our group being ignored I got up again and lost my cool (my bad I was super hungry sorry) I got loud and told the second serve to bring the check we are done. And I mentioned how shitty it was that he would not come back to check on us. His response: I was going to come back when it was time for dessert to offer you a free coffee! Interesting, that gesture was not communicated to me at all So yes ..nope..not going back.. If you want American food in a cheese themed atmosphere with overwhelmed servers and pay a premium for mediocre food then go ahead I will not go again If someone asks me about S&S I keep my mouth shut. But this is a platform for me to share my experiences and my honest opinion.
