About 90% of the patrons are tourists. All came here for the piri piri chicken. Piri piri chicken - It's pretty moist. That's about the good of it. The chicken is pretty tasteless besides some of the skins with the marinated rub which then became too salty. I've had much much better piri piri chicken before so I was sorely disappointed.
I think the first time I tried piri piri chicken was just a few years ago in London at a hugely popular chain, Nando's. It's rotisserie chicken doused with a spicy hot sauce so what's not to like? I knew it was a Portuguese-originated dish, so I looked for a place famous for it. Here on a Sunday evening, there was quite a queue extending up the cobblestone alley, so I realized this must be the place. Although it was at least thirty people deep, it didn't take more than twenty minutes for Jamie W and me to secure a table upstairs. It was a homestyle dining room set-up that hovered between cozy and crowded depending on the fluctuating volume level. Interestingly all the servers were male, and while ours was the most junior, he consciously followed the behavior of his veteran brethren. There was no question about our main course, the 13,5€ Frango Assado No Espeto (Roast Chicken on the Spit) (Photo 7). It was tender and succulent enough albeit a bit under seasoned, all the more reason to pour a liberal dose of the piri piri sauce (Photo 8). Our sides were simple but shareable, the 3,2€ Batata Fritta (French Fries) (Photo 9) and the 4,3€ Salada Mista (Mixed Salad) (Photo 10). Both were fine, though we really wanted to try their Cream Spinach. They were already out of it in the kitchen. We were quite satisfied nonetheless, and their service pretty much worked like clockwork. Jamie and I agreed we'd definitely come back if the passion for poultry strikes us on a return trip to Lisbon. In the meanwhile, I'll just do a run to Costco, buy a rotisserie chicken, and dream of Portugal. On our walking food tour on Sunday afternoon, we passed by and saw a line out the door and halfway down the block, so when we passed by on Monday afternoon looking for a late lunchtime nosh, we saw a two-person line and decided "Why not"? Beer was cold. Salad was good. Cheese was good. Chicken and fish were on the salty side. And our server made a point to tell us the "service charge" was not included in the bill. Just looking for the big American spenders to leave a tip. Which we did.
I went on Christmas Day 2025. They don't answer the phone provided on Google/Yelp, so we were pleasantly surprised that it was open! We got seated immediately around 1pm and then a line/queue started the form. However I saw it went by very quickly. I went with my two parents and we ordered three chickens, chicken soup, one fry, and one rice. They also give you a wheat dinner roll to start. This was plenty for us! One order of chicken comes with two - so in total there were 6 pieces. The chicken was GREAT! I immediately loved the textures and flavors. The skin was definitely quite salty, but the actual meat wasn't that salty. The peri peri/piri piri hot sauce was not that spicy so I added a lot. It kind of reminded me of jalapeño mixed with sweet and sour mixed with siracha. I loved the soup. If you've ever had Korean chicken porridge, it reminds me of that. The fries were also really good which I wasn't expecting. And the rice was seasoned deliciously. My parents didn't care for the rice. Service was quick and efficient. There is a WC/bathroom.
What's the hype?! We went on a weekday night and it was full but not packed. We were first in line and seated immediately. A small line of one or two groups at a time formed throughout the night. We were seated outside and there was a street performer with an acoustic guitar - def added some great vibes to the night. It was a chilly December night but the heater provided *just enough* warmth. We ordered the codfish cakes which were alright - nothing too special. Since it was a little cold out, I also ordered the chicken broth. It was bland, but good in its own way. There was some rice and chicken bits in it that tasted really good. The rotisserie chicken that they are known for was EXTREMELY salty. We were a group of 6 and ordered 2.5 rotisserie chicken (so 5 pieces) but this was actually way too much. It's a little better (but still salty) if you don't eat the skin, but that's the best part given how crispy it was! I tried to drown out the saltiness by using the piri piri sauce and it helped a little bit... but biting into the chicken meant biting into the undissolved salt bits. Given how salty it was, we could not finish it at all and left behind 3 pieces. Service itself was meh. They made sure to inform us that the tip was not included in the bill.
We had just checked in to our hotel at Avenida Palace and was hungry from a 3 hr bullet train ride from Porto. Immediately, I looked on Yelp to see what restaurant to try for our first meal. We chose Restaurante Bonjardim because of location but also wanted a comfort meal and what else would do that but with chicken! We ate around 4 pm and all the tables outside was taken but luckily inside there were tables inside. We ordered the frango assado (full chicken 13.50 euro), batata frita, arroz brasiliera, and added arroz later. So the chicken- probably the best rotisserie chicken I've had. The waiter brought our chicken on a plate and placed one half on mine and the other half to my wife. Added the juices unto our chicken plate. If you like juicy and chicken seasoned with salt, you won't get disappointed with this one. Even the breast chicken had flavor ingrained in them which I suspect they must brine their chicken. 5 stars Arroz braziliera- didn't read what it was but it was chicken liver rice. My wife enjoyed it and as for me, it was flavorful on its own but kind of masked the piri piri chickens flavor which is why we added a plain arroz (rice) later that helped accentuate the taste. 5 stars still since wife liked it. As for the batata frites, not oily but definitely seasoned with salt. Best fries I've had in Portugal since they did have seasoning that you can taste. Service was pretty good. Very little chit chat with the waiter since they constantly were busy. Most of the waiters looked like they are in their 50s and was accommodating when we asked more soda and the rice. We didn't get the chance to try their chicken oil til I remembered after I was close to done. Me and my wife both agreed that we will return before we go back to the states. 5 stars
This place is bustling! We went on a Sunday night around 730(1930) and had a 45 minute weight. Service is fast where the staff are very friendly and try to accommodate people as soon as they can. Unfortunately, our experience with the food was that it was inconsistent.... Some of our chicken was really good and almost perfect while others had chicken that was dry. The piri piri sauce is a spicy oil, which I really enjoyed. It is a busy, commercial area filled with tourists, so know that going in if that is an experience you are looking for!
It was truly one of the cutest and best places I've been while in Lisbon. Right next to the main Restauradores strip with the rest of the food and shopping areas, it is behind the street next to Fabrica de Nata (I had just grabbed a pastel de nata before arriving at the restaurant nearby! It was super convenient.) I really like the interior and exterior. The exterior had around 20 seats and it was facing the side street where you could look out at the cobblestone. It felt dreamy and romantic, especially at night with the street lamps and fairy lights. If it's not too cold outside, I highly recommend sitting outside. Otherwise, the interior was also nice. It was a more modern white tile look, with wooden tables and seats. Inside had around 20 people worth of seating. Bathroom is also located on the second floor and it was pretty clean. I ordered the chicken with salad and rice. I thought that the salad and rice were good combination to balance the saltiness of the chicken. The chicken is what is viral online. And I will say that it lives up to expectations. It's very juicy, very tender with the right amount of chard. The salad is made up of different vegetables with an olive oil and tangy drizzle. And the rice was soft and fluffy. Overall, such a good place to eat. The only thing I will say is that if you will be waiting a little bit for service. But they were attentive. They spoke English and I had no problems going there as a tourist.
This is probably one of the most talked about restaurants on lisbonTok and so we decided to give it a try. Arrived around 2 pm and waited in line for 10 minutes before we got a table outdoors. Started with half a chicken and the garlic prawns along with some fries. The chicken is cooked to perfection indeed and is really so juicy - just I saw on the videos. The shrimp was so fresh and nicely cooked. The shrimp and chicken paired really well with the piri piri sauce. They're known for their chicken and rightly so. Service was quick. And our cheque was around $30 which was very economical. Recommend if you're in Lisbon
Chicken place we found on tik tok The chicken itself was super cheap and the leg was really juicy but once u get to the other parts it got too dry The Brazilian rice sounded good in theory but I did not know it was cooked w chicken liver. It was chicken liver with a side of rice basically I am not a fan wouldn't recommend The meal itself was $30 which is a good price but I wouldn't recommend this was a bit overhyped on TikTok and it wasn't anything crazy
A whole chicken for 2! What Okay... it isn't as much as it sounds like.. I got the chicken for 2 which didn't come with any sides (everything a la carte) so I also got the Brazilian rice, fries and bread (complimentary..not). The chicken was not dry, the skin was salty but it was overall very good. The rice was interesting, it has liver pieces mixed it. I wanted to try this and it was not good. The fries are mediocre...I've had better fries... The bread was on the hard and not so tasty side Environment This was located on a off road, with seating inside and outside. The space is fairly big but since it is popular, I can see it getting busy. When I went, I had to wait despite seeing a lot of seats available.. Niceness of the staff The guy that sat and served me was not as nice. There is a line and so it was you get whatever you are assigned - inside or out. It was a little cold and so I wanted to sit inside and when I asked i was given an attitude. But eventually he moved me inside. Then when it came to taking my order - as a foreigner, I am not sure of the ethics and so I patiently waited which I thought was longer than usually. I tried to signal and flagged him down that I was ready but was given an attitude too. Nontheless, I got my order but the experience with the server was not the best. (please forgive the foreigner) Dollar It was pretty decent, the total was around 30euro for everything. I was very surprised when they had the bill and the bread wasn't on the bill, so when I paid via card, he just added it on the charge.... I am not sure if I was cheated or if the bread indeed costs...I will never find out unless I return. Yes/No I'd caution if I go again and also caution those I recommend to go
Overhyped spot I saw on TikTok for sure! My boyfriend and I came for the piri piri chicken that we saw and everyone raved about this place. We had about a 10ish minute, which wasn't too bad. Right when we sat down the line grew exponentially. We got a nice seat outside and the weather was super lovely. We got an entire chicken on the spit (17.20 euros). It doesn't come with any sides so we ordered fries, creamed spinach and Brazilian rice (has chicken liver in it). For drinks a beer and a lemonade, which I highly advise against because it had zero sugar in it. The chicken was cooked nicely, but there was nothing special about it to me. As hyped as it was, my expectations were super high and I was let down. I did enjoy the creamed spinach and French fries. The service is super quick for sure. They brought everything out within 5-8 minutes. People were in and out of the restaurant pretty fast. Decent place, but would try something else next time.
Best chicken I have ever had! It had so much flavor down to the bone. As if it were marinating for days. So worth the trip even the wait of there is one. Service was fast and efficient. Very nice people. You have to try the green wine also. Beautiful ambiance. A must to try in Lisbon.
Back again after 3 yrs and still the same and consistency. Chicken very juicy and tender and you can taste the sea salt flakes that they used to season the chicken. We ordered 2 chickens and gladly finished everything. So good. Staff could smile a bit more and be more attentive. But it's Europe. So.,,it is what it is. We got there just in time for opening at 11am. Hungry from our flight and wanting to taste authentic peri peri chicken. That sauce is amazing Go later the line up starts...be prepared. This is one of the places I highly recommend in Portugal--a vibrant gem in the heart of Lisbon where the art of rotisserie cooking meets a warm, casual atmosphere. Their rotisserie chicken is unbelievably delicious; I honestly wished I could take it home to the U.S.! The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the cozy interior makes you feel like you're enjoying dinner at your Abuela's home. Truly a must-visit! read more

Great rotisserie chicken. Ask for the chili oils it's great. Ordered chicken, fries and rice. Service was ok and great place to dodge the rain and get a bite to eat. Inside and outside dining available. Ladies restroom is upstairs. read more

Eating piri piri chicken in this beautifully tiled restaurant was an absolute delight. We ordered the frango assado with batata frita, esparregado (creamed spinach), and arroz a brasileira. The chicken was roasted perfectly. It was only lightly salted, but it went so perfectly with the freshly fried and salted potato fries, the whipped spinach, and a liver forward rice that added a nice umami flavor. I put the pirpiri oil on everything; it was light with a spice kick at the end. We also ordered some canja (chicken soup), and it was delicious. It had some rice and chicken pieces in it, and had so much chicken fat in it. read more
We all know that you don't have to go to a five Michelin star restaurant to find great food. On our first night in Lisbon few years ago, we found a place for those who really like their meat and potatoes. Well, you can definitely find some fancy foods in Portugal. It seems like the Portuguese really love, simple foods, especially their meat and potatoes. Getting a seat at this restaurant can be a little bit difficult. I would definitely try to make reservations or get there a little bit early for the dinner crowd. Once you're there, order some wine and choose one of the great options you have I had to go with the steak and french fries which is really basic but was quite delicious. read more

This is easily the best roasted chicken I have ever had! I could eat a whole chicken it was that good. It is worth the line to get seated. The staff was very friendly and the service moved quickly! It's down a quieter street, and has a hugepatio perfect for dining. read more

The roasted chicken was delicious and juicy (half size was good for solo travellers). I also got the spinach as side was really nice balance with a little bit of Portuguese vinegar. Then got garrafa beer. Everything made a great meal. Pedro the Brazilian server was awesome! Super friendly and kind! Got the nice seat by the window listening to live music from a street busker. read more
I truly do not understand why this place is said to be the best Portuguese chicken in Lisbon. I was so excited to go after all the reviews I have seen, and wow did it disappoint hard. The chicken was way too salty, the fries were mid. You need to wait at least 1 hour before you get seated, and just really was not worth the wait. 4/10 recommend! read more

Pretty decent queue (20-25m) to get in, but def well worth it once we got inside. - Chicken soup (with rice & liver bits) is pretty bomb for €2. - Piri Piri Chicken was excellent, esp w rice & killer sauce. - Grilled Prawns are a hard pass. Don't bother. Came back a second time; however, this time around 430pm (between lunch & dinner hours) and there was zero queue. Unfortunately, the chicken soup wasn't available but everything else was. I visited Bonjardim on a Tuesday evening around 5 pm for dinner. All the outdoor tables were filled, but the staff was setting up more, & there were still spots available inside. I was first in line & was told it would only take a moment to be seated. I ended up waiting about half an hour, but I didn't mind the wait too much since I was aware this is a popular restaurant. I ordered their famous peri peri chicken with Brazilian rice. The server brought over a serving of bread while I waited for my order, which only took about 15 mins to come out. Unfortunately, I was disappointed to find the dishes subpar--the chicken was dry & the rice lacked flavor. The couple at the table next to me had also ordered the peri peri chicken along with the bacalhau. They agreed the chicken wasn't very good but they mentioned the bacalhau was delicious. Getting the check took longer than the meal itself, & I noticed the table next to me was waiting just as long. I'm glad I had the chance to visit this popular restaurant for myself, but I won't be retuning. read more

Chicken extra salty and dry - almost inedible. Fries cold and over cooked. Rice was delicious. COD cakes were cold. Outside service was not great...wrong drink and side dish orders. Nice guitarist outside. read more
Bonjardim is known for their spit-roasted chicken with piri-piri sauce. My sister is actually the one who had it bookmarked for this family vacation and she picked a good spot! Our party of 6 came on a Thursday for a super late lunch or super early dinner (?) at around 4:30. We had a big breakfast but didn't have lunch since we just arrived from Porto on a 3-hour train ride. We were still planning to eat dinner later so we just ordered something to share. We ordered the chicken, some salad, and rice, which was a good amount for each of us to just try, and to hold us over for dinner. The chicken was flavorful and tender, even the white meat. But the star of the show was the peri-peri sauce that they keep at each table. It reminds me more of a chili oil more than a sauce, but it really enhances the flavor of the chicken. Be careful though, because it does have a good amount of kick to it. I'm glad we got to try Bonjardim but also kind of wish we had the stomach space and time in Lisbon to have a full meal there. read more
Great option for peri peri chicken , very well seasoned and flavorful, the food was fresh and came out quick. Service is good but don't expect great English, place was clean but outside tables were not as clean. They have covered seating and outdoor heaters. The fries were decent , the creamed spinach was nothing special , and the chicken was well seasoned and very flavorful. Adding chili oil on everything Is a must, great flavor! I enjoyed this place when craving chicken but would like to try more unique Portuguese food read more
