If I could give a negative rating, I would. Front office, nurse, and billing office are not thorough with whether the work is covered by my insurance. I got Dr Chen's phone number and office location from my insurance website indicating he is within network. Went for the appointment and the front office took a copy of my insurance card, then ask for a co-payment upfront. This indicated to me that the appointment was covered by my insurance. When it came to scheduling for surgery, the nurse did not bother to check whether the medical providers and procedures were covered by my insurance, nor tell me if the cost will or won't be covered by my insurance. I canceled my surgery one day before the procedure. Then came the billing for the office visit. I provided the billing office with what I pulled off of my insurance website, which is using the NPI of Dr Chen. But they insisted on using Retinal Diagnostics NPI, which is not in my insurance network. What a mess! If their medical providers are going to use their phone and address, you'd think that Retinal Diagnostics will coordinate with their physicians to make sure any services provided by their providers at their site would be listed in insurance website. Don't use this center. They DO NOT CARE if their services are covered in your insurance plan! The staff at the institution I finally had my surgery performed were diligent in checking first with my insurance plan before they book the procedure. Not Retinal Diagnostics. read more

Staff need education regarding hand hygiene. Neither the technicians or doctor used hand sanitizer or washed with soap and water upon entering the room. Both came in with gloves on and when asked to perform hand hygiene Dr. Chen berated me and wouldn't let me speak after insisting "just say what you want". I tried to explain that I only wanted him to wash his hands before touching the patient (my husband). He refused stating "I see over 50 patients a day. Do you know what my hands would be like if I washed them that much?" Yes sir, I do. They would look like mine because I am a nurse and wash my hands as we are trained to do, between patients, when entering a room, when changing gloves, and before touching a patient. On the day we were scheduled (10/04/24) the office seemed to be overbooked. One of the office staff stated they do get behind when they have to fit in patients who are experiencing emergencies. Understandable. We were reassured that they were just short staffed that day and the wait we experienced was fairly atypical, however after doing a bit of research it is clear that isn't entirely true. Read a few reviews here and you will see it is a common theme. We spent 2 hours and 15 minutes at the office for my husbands appointment. A total of maybe 20 minutes was with a technician or doctor. This morning, I spoke to the "Practice Administrator" Tim to voice my concerns. He laughed and dismissed me. Unfortunately, there are not many retina specialists in the area and Retinal Diagnostic Center seems to be one of the larger practices. I consider your eyes to be one of the most important parts of your body. I need the importance of care to meet my eye care needs. What I was met with Dr He was quite a different experience! This is a specialist, someone who should have a better handle on her bed side manners. Dr he was rushed, limited on explaining what she was about to do to my eyes, as well as dismissive when I told her she's being rough and rushed! As she's using a metal pointy tool to do her exam I told her to stop as this was painful to my eyes she kept on going! No consideration that my sight is hindered with not only no vision but with being dilated. I could not see a thing and was roughly handled. The communication for this appointment was limited as well. I should be informed I'm taking out my contacts, I'm having eyes dilated, bring glasses and that you'll be waiting for nearly two hours for the rushed job of Dr he. On a good note, the technician was gentle and kind. Good luck and I will communicate to the facility who recommended her about my experience. read more

However, even though the entire appointment normally takes 20 minutes you need to budget 2+ hours because they pack the schedule so full by the time you get here the wait is already an hour deep. As with Kat H.'s review, for every appointment, I had to wait a ridiculous amount of time after my scheduled appointment. Even when I was finally brought to the exam room, I still had to wait. I went out and asked how long and was told "in a few minutes." I went out again to use the bathroom (since I had been there for so long). When I came out, the tech said the doctor had been in to see me. I then had to wait *again* until Dr. He finally came in. Dr. He did my macular hole surgery, and it went well. But the day that she left me in the exam room twice, she was abrupt and bordered on rude. Then when she examined my eye, she shined the light so roughly, I had to jerk back. She sort of laughed and said, oops, sorry. I couldn't help but feel her attitude was because I had complained about the wait. I'm glad now that I've switched to a doctor at PAMF. read more

The staff is very good and the doctors always take time to tell me what's going on. I'd give it five stars, but, like others, if feels like I spend more time in the waiting room than I spend seeing the doctors. Emergencies happen, of course, but I wonder if they are overbooked or don't have enough staff to see who they have scheduled. For those of us with social media on our phones, a wifi password on display would be helpful in passing the time. read more

I am. not returning to this practice again, under any circumstances. I'm also going to be contacting the doctor who referred me, my insurance company and anyone else I can think of to share my miserable experience with these people. It all boils down to one thing, which a lot of other people have commented on here -- I waited TWO HOURS this morning for a twenty-minute consultation with a doctor. That is simply bullshit. There is absolutely no excuse for this. The waiting room, by the way, had around dozen other patients, many of whom were quite elderly, facing the same wait. Remember, often this means your eyes have been dilated, and you can't even read. You just sit there, waiting, until the doctor decides to see you. Your time is apparently worthless. I spent an hour sitting across the room from an elderly woman in a wheelchair who just sat there, staring straight ahead, waiting. What else could she do? I do not want to be cared for by a physician who thinks this is okay. Here's how I think this happens: You have a group of doctors practicing together. Because their practice is specialized, because the patients are typically elderly and somewhat intimidated, they'll put up with this, and so you grossly overschedule them so they're stacked up waiting for you all day, like planes over JFK. You, the doctor, can hop from patient to patient to patient all day, racking up the money, and you don't care that they have to wait hours. They'll tolerate it, so you go ahead. The result is maximum income for you, and an absolutely miserable experience for your patients. Nice, huh? Do not go to these physicians. read more

I had two retinal emergency surgeries a week apart and both times, Dr DesSiuki was able to re-arrange his schedule for me and perform the needed surgeries. There were moments prior to the emergency surgeries when my sight was in doubt. Fortunately, the operations were successful, both retinas were re-attached and full sight was restored to my-right eye after an extended recovery and my left eye is on the road to full recovery as of this writing. I am grateful to Dr. DesSiuki for his skillful treatment. I should also point out that Dr. DesSuiuki has a very competent tech staff who support his practice and they are congenial as well which creates a reassuring atmosphere. Sight is paramount to life and I highly recommend Dr. DesSiuki when there is a need. read more

I hate writing negative reviews but I have no choice but to do so. If I could give less than 1 star I would. My experience with Dr. Dessouki, his staff and Good Samaritan hospital in San Jose/Los Gatos was, without any hesitation, the worst treatment and care I have ever experienced. I am 73 and, unfortunately, have had too many, but necessary surgeries over the past 60 years. To start, virtually no medical history was taken. The retina procedure was performed at Good Sam. Arriving 2 hours before surgery, I waited 45 minutes in an empty registration room before I was registered. I then waited another 45 minutes before I got a bed, leaving only 30 minutes to prepare the eye for surgery. The nurse had never worked with Dessouki and had never prepped an eye for surgery. She was so out of control I had to ask her to calm down as she was making me very anxious. The procedure was done under sedation and local anesthesia. That would have been ok except but both wore off before the procedure was completed. I was in intense pain and Dessouki's response was to tell me to hold still. Really? Recovery was in a hallway with no privacy. I had to use a bathroom to change back into my clothes. I have since been told by 2 other Drs. to never go to Good Sam. Post surgical care was a joke. With an appt. and no emergencies ahead of me, it usually took 45 minutes just to see the technician and then another 30-45 minutes to been seen by Dessouki. When I asked him a question the most I got was a grunt. He never looked my in the eye. I had asked him when I could expect my vision to return to normal he said "maybe never." The last time that happened I walked out without seeing the technician or Dessouki. I've since been told that his office books to many patients to close together. I never received a call from Dessouki's office asking if there had been a problem or how I was doing. NEVER go to Dr. Dessouki!!!! Now, if you want proper treatment and professional care I suggest you see Dr. Del Pierro in Monterey. He did retina surgery on my other eye and my experience was 100% different than with Dessouki. I will be doing a review of Dr. Del Pierro, his staff and Community Hospital of Monterey Penninsula. read more

I had to call them 14 times to be able to have a complete conversation with a human. Their voice mail doesn't even state who they are. It's a generic "leave a message"', which is odd. Several calls going directly to said generic voice mail and no call back, but I persisted and was finally able to get a live person, who immediately put me on hold for 15 minutes and forgot me there. I hang up and called again. Busy signals, direct to voice mail, then a person and on hold again for eight minutes and forgotten. When I finally got a person, the call would go silent while one of us were in mid-sentence. It was obvious they were putting me on hold to discuss internally, talk amongst themselves, whatever it was that they were doing. I would wait and wait, then hang up. I would call again, repeat everything said on previous calls, be put on hold again, then the call would get picked up again and.....Call dropped mid-sentence. 14 calls y'all! They kept saying that it was my phone. I actually hung up the phone and cried before giving up because they are essentially the only retina specialist in Santa Cruz and I was at their mercy, unless I wanted to drive over to hill, which is ultimately what I did. If that's how they run their front office, then I have to question everyone involved in that operation, surgeons included. This is not a dry cleaning joint! It's a health clinic specializing in critical eye care. Pathetic! Ah, and my dry cleaners are fabulous, caring folks, by the way. read more

My first visit at retinal diagnostic center took over 3 1/2 hours mostly waiting Dr Chen was dismissive and not helpful. The second visit took almost 4 hours and I missed whole workdays. I had dizziness and no depth perception which left me nauseous and when I called to ask about it got no advice or help. I am left with persistent visual disturbances. I have tried other doctors at the center, but dr. chow is the only one to give me those shots, PAIN FREE !!!! yes I said pain free. if you have had a bad shot experience for your eyes, go see dr. chow , you will have no more fear or pain !!! read more

i-comments I have been getting treatments for Age Related Macular Degeneration with injections in both eyes from Dr. Dessouki at the Retinal Diagnostic Centers in Santa Cruz, and in Watsonville for several years. I believe the treatments are effective in slowing the progression of the disease, and perhaps, with dietary and exercise regiments, reversing and repairing some of the damage. I wish I didn't have this terrible condition, and that I didn't need these injections in the eyeball. However, I do have this condition, and I do need the injections at this time, and I am extremely grateful for the care and treatment that I receive from the Retinal Diagnostic Center, Dr. Dessouki, and his considerate staff. My father had this condition before this treatment was available, and he lost sight in both eyes. I am sure he wished he could tried saving his vision with this procedure. It usually takes a couple of hours for the whole process, and a comfortable environment is provided while I wait. At first I was very stressed out when I went for my injections, but now I am more comfortable, because I see they always follow professional state of the art protocol in each procedure. read more

Dr. Dessouki and his staff at Retinal Diagnostic Center in Santa Cruz are awesome. I have been a patient of Dr. Dessouki for several years. I know that his extensive medical knowledge, surgical skill and preventative care have preserved my vision. Dr. Dessouki's office staff has remained constant over the years which tells me that they must have a good working environment too. His office staff are caring, always friendly and strive to keep patients informed of wait times during each visit. (Because my visits require multiple procedures wait times can vary, however I am grateful for the times when I had to be "squeezed" into an appointment due to an emergency and realize that I might have to wait when someone else has an emergency that needs to be accommodated as well.) Dr. Dessouki's care never feels "routine" and he is ever vigilant in addressing any changes to my vision or level of care required. Therefore, I highly recommend Dr. Dessouki and his staff at Retinal Diagnostic Center to anyone requiring medical services (and emotional support) to navigate the terrifying threat of vision loss whether it is a one-time experience or ongoing ordeal. read more
