I started two years ago with an idea to learn a new skill and see what my friend had been talking about. I started with an intro class which is taught by black and brown belts, they teach step by step moves and it's never more than anyone can handle at once-this gym doesn't expect you to know what you're doing, but I was willing to learn and always made a consistent effort to addend classes. After graduating the level 1 classes i was able to go to level 2 classes yet still always welcomed at level 1 classes to practice the basics. I would recommend to anyone at any age, guy or girl, there are lots of kids classes and other classes i haven't been to. I have known Andrew Smith the owner and head instructor of Revolution BJJ for quite a while. I have always have had much respect for him as he is a calm, patient individual who would meet you with a smile and instantly become interested in anything you have to say. He is an ideal teacher because in the sport of MMA and BJJ sometimes schools become over populated with egos and meat-heads that want to beat you up. While my son liked the gym, the people, and the instruction, it ended up being a big rip-off for the money we had to pay contractually. From that perspective, this place is really not a good option for families exploring new activities for children who have not devoted their life to jiu jitsu. The pay structure makes it very difficult and unlikely to achieve a reasonable per class cost. We ended up spending $1,700 for about a year, while he was only able to attend about once a week, costing us $50/class! There are only two class options a day - 6am and 6pm. So, be careful to be sure you are committed to maximum attendance before you sign the contract that has a minimum $400 termination penalty (depending on the # of days/week you sign up for - the more you spend, the higher the termination fee!). If you let your child take the free trial, the the child will become convinced to join, and then they require the parent to come in to sign the contract on the spot (at least that's what happened to us). When we realized that he was never going to be able to attend enough to make it worth the cost, we asked if the termination fee could be waived considering how much we had already spent for so few classes, and were told no. read more

With no martial arts background, I started with their 8-week intro program, which moved at a great pace and was a great introduction to BJJ in general. I didn't know a single person when I walked in that door, but everyone was very welcoming. The intro program was slow and detailed enough that I didn't feel overwhelmed with information, but fast enough that I was never bored and couldn't wait to come back. I signed up before my 8 weeks was over and have been training about 11 months now. All of the instructors are extremely approachable, knowledgeable, and are great at breaking down techniques without being egotistical or condescending. Additionally, as a woman, I am very pleased with the overall atmosphere at the gym. There is virtually no unnecessarily aggressive behavior, arrogance, or meatheadedness, which is something that I was initially very worried about. I dropped in back in early February. They have people of all belt levels training here including five black belts. The instructors treated me with the same attention they gave their own students. Everyone I rolled with was really nice and I was made to feel very welcome there. In addition to the people, they have top-notch facilities: two rooms with mats, a boxing ring, bags, multiple bathrooms and dressing rooms, and even a washer/dryer to clean your gi. I began training with Andrew in May of 2010. At the time, we were sharing space with a Karate school off Gaskins. I have since followed him to the back room of a powerlifting gym, a converted suite & soon to our newly renovated space on Staples Mill. Throughout it all, the thing that has kept me coming back is a combination of the fantastic instruction & phenomenal comradery.
