Had a chance to visit on a Sunday open mat. Like that they are willing to allow other schools to join their open mat. People were nice and I feel like that is good culture for a MMA gym. Haven't had a chance to take any classes, so i can't say anything about that experience. read more

Came here for training. Everything started out cool. Second week, my teacher is out so the class is lead by one of the more experienced students. Bad idea. At the end of the class we roll. New students are usually paired up with someone according to the teacher. No teacher = every person for themselves. I ended up with a much more experienced fighter. He placed me in a arm bar and left me injured. I went to ER. It felt broken. I couldn't lift my arm or move anything past my elbow. I couldn't move the arm for weeks and I have yet to return to my pre injury performance. Horrible experience. I was told "you should hv tapped" He should not have tried to break my arm, I was in my second week! I didn't understand the danger I was in. The teacher who was missing did call the next day and check on me (reason for 2 stars). I never returned. I cancelled my membership and requested a refund (owner said it's against policy since I was already charged but he did ended up refunding the monthly fee). In my mind, they should be happy I don't sue for negligence. This is not a place for beginners. It's not safe. Hopefully things have changed since my injury. read more

Revolution Martial Arts and Fitness has two locations, one in Houston, and the other in Katy. The Katy location features a unique setup of several types of Martial Arts/Fitness classes. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, No Gi BJJ, Boxing/Kickboxing and Crossfit. I have only taken the Kickboxing/Boxing classes with Kimo Rigmaiden and BJJ taught by Jeff Messina. The gym is not a typical Franchise business with a corporate office. It's a facility with lessons taught by some of the best athletes within their respective fields. The Kickboxing/Boxing classes with Kimo, are idea for anyone looking to get fit, maintain strength and learn good striking techniques. Each session is usually an hour long, and once completed you will be drenched with sweat. Not pretty but worth every drop. Jeff teaches the BJJ classes and others classes during the week. The BJJ class is filled with different skill levels, and they are very patient with newcomers. After one class I was amazed at how much thought and skill goes into Jiu Jitsu. The other students are helpful in teaching the proper technique and providing tips to each other. A fair warning would be BJJ is extremely addictive, for most people that give it a try. The Crossfit class looks interesting, and after observing those that participate, it's extremely effective if you are looking to get in shape and definitely improve your strength. All of the classes are coed, and everyone would feel welcomed here. After almost a year, I would say it's a great place to call home for any of the classes they offer. Recommendations: Try every class at least once, and then plan a weekly schedule to start a routine and measure your gains in skill and strength. Good To Know: Check attitudes at the door. The culture/environment here is extremely friendly and helpful, and no one walks around with a huge ego or attitude even though majority of the athletes are extremely skillful. I started training at another school, but after a move across the country, I needed to find a local place. I found my "home" at Revolution BJJ. This gym is the best in Houston (and beyond). You can tell as soon as you walk in - people are friendly and welcoming. The children have a great time in the kids' classes, and there's a number of women who train in the adults class, which is a rarity in many schools. The instructor, Jeff Messina, is amazing. His teaching style breaks down the techniques into details that can be followed by all of his students, whether child or adult. I stopped in to train at the Revolution Dojo while visiting family in Texas for the holidays. I had a great training session. I would highly recommend this gym to anyone looking to train jiu jitsu in the Katy / Houston area. The facilities of the gym are nice as there is a lot of mat space, and a lot of people as well. I came in on a weekday morning not expecting too many people to be there at 11 am around the holidays. However, I was impressed with the number of people that showed up and I was able to get to roll with a lot of different people. They have a big team which is always a plus in order to be able to have many different training partners. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. When my twins were 6 I knew that some form of regular physical fitness activity would yield enormous benefits to them. The fear of watching them meld into ipads and couches while growing horizontally as fast as vertically was not something I could ignore. I also wanted something that would be available year-round instead of seasonal, and given that the greater Houston area's climate is less than ideal for those who do not relish extreme heat and humidity for about half the year, I felt that an indoor activity would be best. A District Judge friend who had a similarly aged kid and who is himself an MMA competitor recommended Jeff Messina's dojo and after visiting the Katy location and meeting him and trying it out we knew it would be perfect. The friendliness of everyone there, the life-skills taught, the self-confidence imbued into them as well as the social benefits of their being lovingly accepted into the community were benefits that I had not contemplated but which also became far more important and beneficial than even the bjj skills and physical fitness I was looking for for them. The actual skills taught have been eclipsed by all of those things, and my kids have already reaped enormous benefits due to all those things (and of course by extension our family and home life have enjoyed the yielded benefits of their personal growth and respect for themselves and others. Those are all the things we have realized as "ancillary benefits" to the training. As for the training itself, is there a better skill for self-defense for kids? Rhetorical question. Jiu jitsu is perfect for kids and adults who want a skill that actually works and which doesn't bring the risk of turning the kids into strikers before they have the maturity to control themselves. The self-confidence gained, as well as the emotional controls taught and practiced cannot be over-stated in my opinion. We have been going 3-4 times a week ever since the day I first shook Professor Messina's hand, and I cannot imagine any other dojo coming anywhere close to our "home away from home" that Revolution has become. As to the actual skills taught, until you have actually seen the difference between a dojo like Revolution and the majority of the others in the area, you won't appreciate it. I have been studying martial arts since 1985, and being active duty military, I've had the fortune to train many styles in many places. There are very few schools/gyms that balance the aspects of family, teamwork, and pure competitive drive as wonderfully as Revolution Dojo. After relocating back to Houston, I have chosen Revolution as my home gym. Terrific atmosphere and accommodating staff. They have the most comprehensive schedule and a great facility to top it all off, complete with showers. After looking into several places for my 13 year old son to learn self defense, thanks to a good recommendation from my sons friend and his parents we decided to join Revolution Dojo in 2012. A year later after seeing my 13 year old boy (2 years ago), develop into and a very fit athlete as a BJJ practitioner, I thought I would give it a try, per his recomendation. In the beginning I was hesitant to make the jump but I am so glad I did. I decided to join Revolution Dojo in Katy 16 months ago and I completely love it. As an adult in the high 40s and an active person (play soccer, golf and work out), I needed something else that can challenge my cardio (and lose weight). Then I found BJJ thanks to my kid, now 15. BJJ is like no other sport, a combination of warm ups, drills, technique and rolling (sparring). Our coach is Mr. Jeff Messina, a second degree black belt in BJJ, an incredible human being with a heart for the sport, a soldier, father and husband. As an instructor and our mentor, he also competes at the national level. What I also like from our coach is that he takes the time to help others, based on each persons level of knowledge. Revolution is not a gym, it is where strangers become friends and friends become family. I have been a member of Revolution Dojo for about 5 months now and my results are immeasurable. All my life, I have been an introvert. I've kept to myself and pretty much lived with a "me against the world" mentality. I first walked into the Revolution Dojo 10/12 I was greeted by strangers with smiles, greetings, and pats on the back welcoming me. This was very different from what I was expecting. I pictured myself being beat up, yelled at, and basically taught a hard lesson because I was the new guy. I could immediately feel welcomed. I have met many great people at Revolution and I can feel my personal bubble has overlapped with everyone else's creating a Venn diagram with Brazilian Jujitsu and Judo at the intersection. I could list all the quantitative feats I've accomplished from training hard in BJJ and Judo at Revolution Dojo like the fact that I've lost 22 lbs, lowered my body fat percentage from 24% to 13%, I've gone down 4 pant sizes, or developed a 6 pack with a 8 pack coming shortly. Now for the qualitative results: Let me tell you how I derived to the conclusion that Revolution Dojo has succeeded me. Jonathon Naranjo (one of the BJJ instructors) is my friend and mentor. He has taken time that he could spend training to help me with my BJJ development. He has taken a mat sloppy tennis player with no combative training and made me into a rolling Tasmanian devil. Jaime Lazcano ( the Judo instructor) explains Judo to me in a format that makes it easy for me to understand. He recognized that I have a very systematic way of learning, and explains judo in a format that I understand the best, angles in degrees, distances with units of measurement, directions with a constant reference, and balance in the percentage that which body weight is distributed. I have never left Judo class with an unclear concept or unanswered question when coach Jaime is around. Jeff Messina (The head BJJ instructor) recognizes there is more to life then metals and trophies. Just ignore that fact that almost all of the north wall of the Katy gym is completely covered in medals, trophies, and belts. Or dozens and dozens title won. Jeff is a wealth of knowledge and takes it as a privilege if he is able to pass what he knows onto his students. I would have no other person guide me in my martial arts journey. I am more confident than I have ever been. I am more respectful and less judgmental than I was before. I hug all my team members as soon as I see them. I am in better shape than I was when I played collegiate and challenger tennis. My relationship with my family is stronger than ever. Didn't sign up with them, but I tried their Muay Thai class. I was the only female there and the workout was a little intimidating, but after about 20 in I was really enjoying it. The instructor is very knowledgeable and approachable. The class size isn't too large. Lots of parking and in a safe area. Would have signed up if I could only pay for the Muay Thai classes. Unfortunately, they only charge one price and it includes BJJ and everything else. Took away one star for the lack of flexibility in this area. Highly recommend though. read more
