REWE Center has a special place in my heart. It's the size of a Wal-Mart but without the typical clientele or post-apocalyptic state. For fellow US expats, I'd compare this to Publix on the East Coast or Andronico's in California in terms of shopping experience. It's by far the most affordable option for consistently good quality. ALDI's always going to be cheaper but the experience there is like shopping at Big Lots. They have parking (cars and bikes) in the front and back. Surprisingly, there is only one Pfand machine here, and it can be a bit temperamental sometimes. There is also a salon, hardware store, travel agency, gift store, bakery, pet store, dry cleaners, locksmith, and 2 fast casual eateries in the same complex. It's basically a city. If you got stuck inside, you could live out the rest of your life pretty comfortably. They occasionally have more obscure products that are harder to find here in Hamburg (e.g., vanilla extract, chocolate chips). Huge spice section, too. If I was still in the neighborhood, this would be my go-to grocery store. Being on the other side of the Alster unfortunately makes it rather hard to get to for daily shopping. read more

Rewe Center is the biggest supermarket I've seen in Hamburg so far (I've lived here for a year), and despite the size, I find it to be a pretty high-quality one, too. Rewe is located in a fairly large complex with some other much smaller businesses, and has its own huge double-decker parking lot which can be entered from Krohnskamp (not the tiny strip next to Hagebaumarkt). Parking alone is a nice feature. I'm not sure there's any one way in which this grocery store stands out, except in size and selection. The produce is generally good-looking and plentiful, the dairy and meat sections are huge and offer everything you could want, and there's a sizable liquor department, too. Someone tipped me off to the fact that they carried frozen turkeys, so we got our Thanksgiving turkey at Rewe. Despite having such a tremendous selection, I have a few frustrations. The biggest one is that the legume department is so small. My family eats a lot of beans and lentils, and it was so hard to find either one that I had to ask. Once I found it, I realized why I had overlooked it... there were probably two shelves of beans two feet wide (and this is a store with a whole aisle of chocolate products). The other issue is that the selection isn't reliable from day-to-day; one day they had lots of pancetta, the next it was impossible to find any (although if you need German meat products, you're gonna be fine). It's also worth mentioning that there's a miniature soccer field towards the middle-back of the store for kids to play in. So come on in, drop your kid in the soccer cage, and enjoy your shopping! read more

3x online bestellt.

Mein absoluter lieblings Supermarkt!
