I transferred here to work on my bachelors degree. I was a commuter like most of the study body here. It's a big campus on top of a hill with multiple buildings. I decided to go here because it's affordable; parents aren't rich enough to pay for my tuition and I wasn't the smartest to get a scholarship lol. I enjoyed my experience here except like most people mentioned, there wasn't much of a college life. I worked full time and went to school full time so my time was limited to hang around anyway. Although, I didn't get the college experience, I still felt like I got a good education. I switched majors a couple of times but ended up with one I loved and my advisor, professor, and head of the department was awesome. He guided me in the right direction and was an easy going person. I took night classes for the most part; I've had classes until 10 pm. The scheduling was decent for working students. The website was outdated but it got the job done. I was able to pay my bills, schedule courses, and access my grades/transcript. Downfalls, parking was always a nightmare; I would park what felt like miles from the building. Imagine walking alone at night and in the winter! I always felt safe but just be aware of your surroundings and bundle up in the winter. The buildings were old but it got the job done. Classes averaged about 25-30 students. Professors were helpful, friendly, and smart; I've had some really strict ones. Overall, if you're on a budget and want a good education, I recommend going here. Now I'm going back to graduate school and look forward to doing everything online! Those days of going to campus are over. I would definitely send my future children here. (If I still lived in RI). read more

I recently came back to the campus in which I earned my Master's degree to celebrate The Sherlock Centers 30th Anniversary. RIC is a relatively small campus with great walkability. I never have an issue finding parking. Many of the building have been renovated in recent years and are super clean. read more

Hey look, I'm still here! I will finally be graduating in May after 2 years full-time and 5 years part-time. I've seen a lot since I've been here so long. My previous review still stands, but I've also uncovered a lot more awful things about this place, hence the demotion to two stars. The food is horrendous. Awful. Inedible. They force every student to pay a fee for the dining center every semester. On top of that, you either have to buy a meal plan or pay for the food. Both options are severely overpriced. The dining center has way too many administrators and state employees to pay, so they seriously cut corners with the food. Buildings are falling apart. They did just get some state money to do renovations, but because this is a state institution it's going to take years before anything actually happens. Yeah, and you look down the road at PC and watch an entire building go up in less than 6 months... The state unions here do nothing but protect the people who suck at their jobs. If you're ever trying to get anything important done with your academic records, expect it to be a huge project because nobody cares about you and nobody wants to do any work. SO MANY professors here need to retire, especially in computer science. They're teaching outdated software and skills that you will never ever use. This college gears toward working-class families, yet offers hardly any night classes. Balancing work and school is a major struggle as it is, and this place makes it harder. That ONE class you NEED will always be offered in one section at 2pm on Monday and Wednesday so you'll never be able to have a normal 9-5 day job and get a degree from here. If you can manage to get a decent job on campus, you may have better luck with the work/school balance, but they're not easy to come across since everybody wants one. New Hall is beautiful, but the rest of the dorms are gross. The two years that I lived on campus were awful and I was sick all the time from the mold and dust buildup. Nice things: BEAUTIFUL, awesome new rec center with free aerobics classes and a pool. Active, involved student media orgs that put out a great newspaper, radio broadcast, and TV station. Student Government that tries really hard to fix stuff, even though they are small in numbers. Lots of free help on campus such as tutoring, counseling, and career advisement. Some really awesome professors that go out of their way to see you succeed. read more

For it's price, RIC does what it needs to do. I transferred in after 2 years of design school and decided to jump into the management program. I demanded an adviser before they were mandatory and relied on her to help me pick out some courses. Took 3 years of my nose to the grindstone but I got out with my BS on the Dean's list and Magna Cum Laude. I now work at a fantastic company who didn't blink an eye that I went to the cheapest option available. Many co workers look down on me for not having a name brand education, but hey, I have the same job/career as them, so why does it matter? read more

I had a great time at this school. It took me a while and some going part-time to finish up, but I have to say I was satisfied overall. My major was HR and there were only two faculty. This can sound like a setup for disaster, but these two faculty members deserve every accolade they receive. Dr. Shani Carter and Dr. Randy DeSimone are two professors I remember fondly, even all these years later. I minored in Mathematics and the faculty there were hit-or-miss. I specifically recall Dr. Humphreys being adept at illustrating complicated math problems graphically, which was very helpful. I was a highly involved student and in general, my experience with being involved with student organizations was a positive one. The food was mediocre, but I don't care. It was college. I didn't expect gourmet meals from a school with no culinary program. My on-campus job was great. Scheduling of classes always worked out favorably, because even in the few times they didn't fit, the school made accommodations to help my class graduate. It was just a matter of asking! It's a little too easy for students to ascend to power in the student organization scene, which leads to a lot of in-fighting and politicking. It's about what you'd expect, but it's sitcom-levels of anxiety just to run a club. Very little actually gets done in this regard. You'd expect a high turnover in student leaders, but financial incentives are attached to managing some clubs. If you're popular and conniving enough, you can leverage enough positions to squat in college while financially accruing enough money to justify it. read more

I'm giving this college one star just because of how rude they allow some of there staff to be to the college students. In particular the over weight lady that works at the financial aid office. It's just not a comfortable or welcoming place for me. I'm a respectable adult who makes much more than there office staff already, yet when you go in there they treat you like a third world citizen, applying for a visa. I literally will not be going there because of this, and the fact that they pretty much only have parking for faculty. #Students lives matter. We're your only customers. read more

Both my sons attend this school and although it's not fancy the education is top notch. It's local. Clean and the staff is caring of all their students. I have a senior and a freshman and I like the dorms they are welcoming . Both sons have no complaints. One of my sons does a sport and he enjoys it. My other son does Intermural's and fully enjoys his experiences at RIC. read more

Well, it's RIC. What else can I say. I studied Psychology and Mental Health Counseling here and I can't complain about the program or the education I received. The professors were all experienced and knowledgable, the classroom sizes were reasonable and varied from 11 to lecture halls, and I felt I was able to balance work, personal, and school life. The admin kinda has their head up their ass when it comes to tracking credits, managing your finances, etc, so just keep a copy of everything in case they misplace credits you've already taken or drop you from all your classes because somewhere it didn't record your payment. Parking is absolutely ridiculous. For a commuter school it's a battle every single day to find a spot even remotely near your class, and I've had to walk across campus in snow and rain to get to a class, run in some cases in order to not be late. I never lived here so I'm not sure about student life on campus, but friends of mine lived here and the dorms are standard issue and there does seem to be activities to keep students occupied. The food is pretty decent at the cafeteria, with vegan and gluten-free options which is very cool. There's a cafe with decent coffee and pastries, good pizza, so-so sandwiches. Can't think of much else to say. For the money (tuition is amazingly inexpensive compared to URI or other colleges) you get a hell of an education. Headaches and hassles with systems and parking. read more

The programs available at RIC are great. However, the staff working for the school are extremely unprofessional and rude. As a student we are paying thousands of dollars to better ourselves and I don't think it's right to be the talked to the way I have by multiple departments. Very disappointing and by talking to other people I know I'm not the only one who deals with these issues. read more

When you have been here as long as I have, you feel like you might need to write a review. I am finishing up after first arriving in 2007. I am leaving after one more summer course with my Master of Arts in psychology. People have criticized the leaking roof, terrible food and lack of "campus life" due to it being a commuter school. I would agree with all of those things, and I would include I failed to ever get my club idea off the ground because anybody who was interested worked too much or couldn't sign up in conscience knowing they would miss all of the meetings. So with all of these problems, why I am not giving it one star? I am giving it a solid +1 for good people, and another for academic quality. I have met some truly wonderful people here, and due to being a regular fixture in the psych department for more than half a decade, I have become quite friendly with all of the professors. I was a teaching assistant as a graduate student, and my lab students were truly great. In terms of what I learned, I couldn't have asked for more. When applying for PhD programs, I have had a lot of difficulty. I think it is because the people judging apps haven't heard of RIC, or probably think we graduate a bunch of dunces. This elitist mindset is troubling to me. I have come out of RIC prepared to deal with the rigor and intensity of any graduate program. I know this because I have friends in doctoral programs at Brown and Yale that would validate my claim. I'm not just gloating here, I am saying that Rhode Island College, on a purely academic level, has some of the best professors that actually care about you, that any other school could boast. Just stay away from the cafeteria. read more

RIC is a good school. Like others have mentioned, it's nothing fancy, but the teachers seem to be great so far and I feel like I am actually learning, not just memorizing. The campus is practical. The whole admissions thing can be a nightmare, specially since they use 'the common app'. You might end up having to hi to the admissions department a few times, but they are helpful. Once all of that us taken care of, it's smooth sailing. The tuition is a bargain for instate. They also have regional tuition for folks living in neighboring states. They have a very solid film department, so it's definitely worth a check out! read more

RIC is decent state school. Nothing fancy or outstanding (well, many instructors are) but does its job. It is known for its teaching and social work programs. It is also good way to get BS/BA for low tuition and move on to graduate studies. Campus is ok, some buildings are ugly but others are new and cute. It is also not very social or party school and if those features are really important to you don't go here. This school has more cozy and quite environment and yes, many people like it. People are in general friendly. Student body is very diverse- have seen adults in their 50s, weird students, cool students, some are motivated and smart and some are behaving like they are in high school. The reason I gave four stars is instructors in this school. I have had many great and even outstanding professors here. With such faculty, RIC in my opinion has great potential to become much more than your average school. Unfortunately, here is no social life. It is very important for school to have parties, social events etc, it brings students together, builds community and rises student spirit. RIC is lacking that and administration does very little to make situation better. RIC would be great school if it had more social involvement. School in general is evolving and progressing and depending on what to study here it can be good or not so good experience. read more

Rhode Island College is the most unorganized school I have ever had to deal with. They charged my tuition 5,000 and couldn't explain to my mother or I why it was there. When they finally took the UNNECESSARY charge off it was 3 weeks into the semester and now they say "oh sorry there's no classes for you to take" and now I am screwed out of my classes and have to wait a whole semester and I am behind . read more

As a parent paying tuition - I'm really disappointed in the number of science classes offered to students in the medical field. Seeing as how there is quite a large number of students in the nursing, Nuclear Tech, MRI etc programs there aren't enough professors. The staff's answer always is to take the class at CCRI or some other qualifying community college. We are paying for an on campus student. If that is the answer then I think we made an error in choosing this college. If we wanted a community college then that is what we would have choosen. read more

I attended this college from 2005-my graduation in 2009. Since then, I went on to Curry College for my Paralegal certificate, and will be continuing on for my MBA in 2018. RIC is a nice school for your "foundation." Low cost, close to home, and I had mostly great professors. They earned a massive grant a few years after I graduated, which was used for beautification/revitalization of the school's buildings, grounds, and parking lots. It looks like a whole new place now! I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because the dining hall (Donovan) is disgusting. The food is barely edible and many of the items are expired. Look far enough into The Anchor's (student run newspaper) archives and you'll see the article I wrote on that very topic. When I attended RIC, most of the buildings were in disrepair, but I was raised in a poor MA city so I was used to it. I found it easy to make friends, both inside and outside the classroom. There's not much to do on campus if you're looking for structured events- but you're only a stones throw from Providence Place Mall, PPAC, Trinity Rep, and some of Providence's waterfront clubs/pubs. It's a decent deal for the good quality education. I was able to graduate in 4 years while holding an on campus job. I lived in the dorm the first 3 years and rented an apartment my senior year. I never had a car on campus and - if you land an on-campus job in one of the offices like I did -- you really don't need one. There's a RIPTA shuttle with a RIC stop, so you can still get around the city. It's not perfect, but it's not terrible, either. I made some lifelong friends, a boyfriend, and some essential progress from childhood to adulthood there. If you're contemplating attending RIC, do it. I highly recommend it, as you'll get exposure to many great people while learning quite a bit (from textbooks and life). Did I mention how RIC is also close to India Point?! read more

Rhode Island College is an awful school and students look like morons. I went to the library to do my homework in the computer and a girl was standing close to the people working in there. She played a video on her speakerphone to disturb everybody while she was laughing noisily. And she played it over and over again without nobody telling her to shup up.Another day I went to a lower level of the same library to search for a book. People were preparing their exams and many were studying for hours. A guy was sitting in there studying while two girls were speaking very loudly withour caring if they were bothering him. One started to sing at the top of her lungs and telling to her friend that she was rehearsing for a play and asking how she was doing. I feel annoyed every time I hear students talking, they look completely retarded. Rhode Island College is very affordable for me and for many others but classes have low quality. You pay little but you get less at the end. read more

Don't go to RIC for the Medical Imagining Program. I transferred there with my associates in Health Science. They had me take philosophy classes( but you could take other pointless classes as an option), English, and a 1 credit course for introduction to Medical Imagining. The problem is that there was 70 people in the 1 credit class. Why is that a problem? They only accept maybe 35 people each year to actually get into the program. Why is 50% bad? There are another 100+ that got denied the previous years, told to wait and reapply. I had a 3.8 GPA and did all that was asked of me. I applied to all the modalities available and got denied twice. I wasted a year and a half of my life, thousands and thousands of dollars for classes that no other college would accept toward other degrees, such as their 1 credit class and philosophy classes. At the end of the day, the advisors tell you that you have a great chance of getting in and have you take their classes, just to take your money. They MAYBE accept 20% of the people applying and string along and steal the money from the other 80%. I know 4 people with my same story and Rhode Island College keeps on robbing innocent people trying to better their life and get a good career. This should be investigated and their robbing of peoples time and money needs to stop. DO NOT GO TO RIC FOR THE MEDICAL IMAGING PROGRAM!!! Don't be a fool like me. The only way into the actual program is an interview with the board of the Medical Imaging Program. You could have a 4.0 and one persons bias against you could alter your hard work. It should be based of performance, not a bias interview. Unless you have an in with the board members, don't give yourself false hope. I recently talked to someone who said they knew someone getting in. I told them this story and they said that he knows someone and he is guaranteed to get in. Must be nice knowing someone to further your success in life, but those 80% being dragged in the mud is unacceptable. Good luck everyone. Sorry for such a long post. read more
