The only reason I have continued to use this credit union is that the interest rate I received in 2016 was excellent. So I will give them credit for that. However, the customer service is abysmal. Like all the other reviewers, I agree, it is a painful experience to work with this credit union. There is no way to view my transactions online. Is it 2025? Or do they just purposely want me to be in the dark? I have to wait for a paper statement once a year to see all activity on my account. I have a mortgage with them and typically annually they have underestimated what I will owe towards escrow and when I have paid the difference on two different occasions, they have credited the escrow payment towards a regular payment, even though the form clearly states it's an escrow payment and I've stated to the person in person (because there's no way to do this online), but that's what it is for and yet it's still gets misallocated. Today was the icing on the cake. I went to their new office in Warwick to ask them to print off a list of my transactions. I was met at the front door by a woman who told me that "this was not a branch" and I asked if she could help with the request and she actually said "no. " Not, call this number or I can add a request, just "no." When I went to my local branch, I waited in line with about 6 other people while 2 tellers tried to manage everything, the branch manager appeared to return from lunch with her Dunkin and casual Friday attire, and talked to someone on the phone from her office about what the plan for dinner was after she sat down. The warren office of the Rhode Island credit union has to have the worst customer service. I had to wait five-ten minutes to be spoken to at the drive-through. The person in the drive-through was on the phone helping a customer at the walk up. Why have a drive-through. read more

I'm in the middle of an application and I already have regrets. Assigned technician are unavailable and take days to a week to respond if they respond at all. It's already been a month and I feed this nightmare will drag on for months at this rate. If I hadn't spent my hard earned money, I would not waste a second on these lost causes. I did an auto refinance in 2015 with RICU through AAA they required me to open a savings account there to get the rate they advertised (seemed simple enough). They required ALL updates to be done in either paper letter or by going into a branch (because its 1980). I missed almost a year of statements because I wasn't made aware of that, I thought a phone call would've been sufficient, like every other financial institution... I had to set up bill pay with my regular bank because their website/app were basically useless, about the same as their phone reps. I was also almost late on my first payment because no account info was provided by mail until after the first due date. Luckily I'm dilligent and called in for it. I paid off my loan almost a year early, just because I really wanted to be done with it. Thankfully I had MAILED a letter to update my address, or I'd never have recieved my title. I found out about a year later that they charged a fee for their MANDATORY savings account if it's the only account you have there, they charged it to a zero balance and closed it without providing any kind of contact, despite the rep I spoke to in Dec 2018 telling me it just sat their until I came in to close it or WROTE AND MAILED a letter to close it. I've had nothing but headaches with them from start to finish, they are the greediest "non-profit" I've ever seen and I am embarrassed that they use my states name. Never again. I'd rather have paid a higher rate at a less sketchy bank than this sad excuse for a credit union. read more

I have been trying to set up my payments on line and it is absolutely impossible. I've wasted so much time just trying to pay remotely. I was out of town recently and I tried a few phone numbers they had listed. One was defunct. Finally I reached someone who took my payment info. Three weeks later I get a notice that I haven't paid my bill and then threatening to report it to the credit account buteau. read more

DO NOT USE RI CREDIT UNION!! The most, absolute incompetent credit union/financial institution that I have ever belonged to! I've been a member for a year and recently signed up with another CU. RICU should have sent me another debit card, to replace my expired one, however, just like their usual, they failed to do so. My partner received his, we have a joint account. I'm trying to call... no answer. The Providence location has horrible hours. They close at 3:00pm. The 1st time that we used the ATM, (a week after opening an account) it was empty, forcing us to find another financial institution ATM. I've been treated extremely rudely in the Providence location, asking me for my SS# when I was at the counter and had given the teller my account card and license. I refused and spoke to a manager. My online service has required several calls to IT, the passwords often are not useable. Within months of becoming a member, RICU no longer had a mobile app. They finally have a new one, months later. What a frustrating mess and embarrassment. read more

This Credit Union is probably the worst financial lending institution in this state. The week long process of applying for an auto loan was absolutely ridiculous. I only went here because their rates were very competitive and they are recommended by AAA. First of all, during the week long wait to get a decision I went to three different area car dealerships: Toyota, Hyundai and Carmax. All three pre-approved me for financing on $30k. My credit score is upper 600's. None of these places shook me down for last years tax returns and this year's affidavit of earnings like RICU. I am self employed since losing my last job ( ironically at a bank ) because of covid shut downs. The woman who initially took my application in person was very nice and seemed competent. She told me I could have a decision as soon as next business day. Well, so much for that! After 2 business days I called to follow up - and on each following 2 days. Each time I got bounced around from one associate to another with no information / just dropped calls and promises of call backs. No one at this bank has voicemail nor are you ever given anyone's email to expedite communications. Finally at the end of the week some woman named Rita called and left generic message to call back. When I did, got another associate who after struggling to find anything in the computer on my application eventually said I was denied due to this that or the other thing - but then she said maybe with a co-signer. That afternoon I went down to collect my original copy 21 tax return and payment stubs for this year's earnings. An assistant branch manager eventually invited me into his office where he again brought up my application. I told him I was denied and wanted my documents back. He then bumbles around in his computer and states the application is still under review and is being " referred"? Referred for what I asked? He states dead pan affect looking straight at me like I asked some kind of stupid question and says " consideration".. ? Wait,.. it gets better. Then I say please just give me my documents back I am no longer interested in financing here. He then incredulously mumbles to me that they no longer have my original documents because they get scanned by the loan department and then are shredded. Ok - at this point I have a mini stroke because no one ever told me that was their process or asked if it was ok. I insisted he double check and make sure. He leaves me in his office for 10 minutes and eventually returns ( thank God - because I was getting ready to call a lawyer) with my documents. I admonished him for unduly upsetting me like that - he said " oh, sorry - didn't do it on purpose." Just the fact they have someone as deliriously incompetent as this dude in an assistant manager's role speaks volumes to the treachery of this crappy credit union. I couldn't wait to get out of here and told him I wanted my application withdrawn from it's "referred" status. So, long story - short point. You've been warned! This is the last place on earth you should ever apply for an auto loan! read more

My parter and I recently went into the Pascoag location to open an account. Let's just say Barb was less than friendly. She was rude from the get go and treated us like we didn't deserve to be there. She asked us for materials that were not noted as being needed to open an account-that when I mentioned that they should look to update their website to include what is needed. After reading the other reviews am I so happy we didn't have a bill. Long story short-she treated us like we had no chance in hell to get a loan with them let alone open an account. Every negative review is true. I'm leaving this joint after years of dealing with them. Im waiting for my Quicken mortgage to close, and I didn't even bother going through RICU. I haven't for my cars either. The only reason I was with them is because they were down the street. The last straw was yet another nasty response (this time by phone) questioning why I'd need my Visa replaced. Well maybe because I'd lost it? Another trip to the branch. Every other bank card I have simply mails one the same week and Id change my pin online. I had lost my debit card years ago while out of town for a couple months. I sent them a notarized affidavit as requested in order for them to send a new one. Then then refused to send a pin#... They've never offered a loan or anything considering my balances and card payment history with them, unlike other banks. My mom's CU sends her pre-approved offers from La, and she's retired. I remember starting out with a secured Visa card. They insisted on running my credit again just for me to add money to my card after a year of paying off my balances each month. I don't know if this is standard banking practice, to be fair... BTW: I saw James mentioned in another review, and I'm now wondering if he's the Peter Griffin looking one at the Cranston branch . He would usually dangle my money in the air silently while peering down at his screen while greeting and thanking the white folks and after before me... read more

Let me preface this by saying that I hate to give a local company a one-star review, but this is what I'm stuck doing. Philosophically, I love the idea and the theory behind credit unions. The service my husband and I have received from RICU has been a major detriment to any choice I might have to use them. First, when my husband and I were looking for a mortgage, he called the RI Credit Union to find out what paperwork we would need to fill out an application. He took careful notes of what we'd need, and shared them with me. I went to fill out a mortgage application, and I discovered that I would need some more and some different materials from what he had gotten from his phone call. (He called the Providence location, and I went to the Kingston location to fill out the forms.) First alarm bell: can't get consistent information. I went ahead and applied for pre-approval. I was told it would be about a week before we'd be pre-approved. It actually took over two weeks for us to get a pre-approval letter. (Our regular bank turned letters around in a matter of minutes - a serious help when it comes to the current housing market.) Second alarm bell: slow, not responsive. Thanks to the speed of our regular bank, we had a signed purchase & sales agreement, and now we really needed a mortgage, and I wanted to lock in an interest rate. I applied with RICU, and wrote a check for the application fee. Unfortunately, the subsequent documentation we needed to sign WENT TO THE ADDRESS OF THE HOUSE WE WERE TRYING TO PURCHASE! We didn't live there yet! We hadn't bought it! Yet RICU was sending documents with our personal financial information there. Third alarm bell: They do not understand that we are trying to buy a house, and we need to fill out appropriate forms to do so. In the meantime, we got a loan with a lender who gave us a more favorable interest rate, and who got back to us with lightning fast speed. Finally, no Saturday hours at the main location in Providence. Really!? I really wish I could have given RICU a better rating, but I wasted my time with them. If you try them, I hope you stop at the first sign of problems. read more

I am happy to support a local business. Let's do a list: Pros: always really friendly staff, decent location-easy to get to (the only other one I visited was the one on the URI campus which was not easy to get to), local business- not a big bank, once you figure out the online banking it does what it should. I've never had any problems with my account or money there. Cons: the hours are kinda ridiculous (but I think this is more a RI thing, late hours are 6pm only on Friday? Really? Otherwise close at 3:30??? Come on! And no weekend hours. No mobile app. Sometimes lines are long and slower than they should be. In the end, it's a good local credit union for your banking needs. It does the job. If most of your stuff can be done online, once you get going its good. However for 21st century business practices, it needs to catch up to the future: hours that a working person can actually utilize during the week (ie at least one or two days until 7pm - or least another past 5pm, and a weekend, and a mobile app. It's time to bring the friendliness and good customer service to the business practices since I don't always want to come into the building, and frankly sometimes I can't cause they are closed. read more

Thug security guard at the Providence branch made me step back two extra feet at the front door even though I was socially distanced during the virus scare a year ago. The teller offered to do my banking at the back door which I refused. I returned on 4-2021and the same security thug was present barking orders. I will never return to this branch. read more

I wish there was an option for NO stars! My wife and I opened an account about a year ago. Every time we have done any kind business with this bank it is a complete and utter disaster! From their very limited hours of operation to every employee we have dealt not knowing what they are doing....to employees being down right rude when we question why they can't do a simple transfer of funds. My AAA car loan was placed through RICU. In my 2 months as a customer, I have found it to be one of the most backward financial services providers around (and I bank with Santander!). As others have noted, they keep banker's hours, and there is no after-hours phone coverage. They are not set up to receive bill payments from other banks electronically, so loan payments go out by check. (They even still use coupon books.) Similarly, you can't export account data to services like Quicken or Mint. Their (outsourced) website is ridiculous. You apparently have to respond to a captcha and answer a challenge question every time you log in. (And it's down right now, in the middle of the business day.) And of course, no mobile app. Their technological illiteracy apparently extends to social media. They haven't even claimed this Yelp page! Avoid If you value being able to manage your finances using modern tools or expect an industry-standard level of customer service. read more

Stuck in the 80s! My husband applied for an auto loan for a used vehicle. We applied online and were not able to upload any docs through their website. He is a corrections officer and cannot get any personal calls for obvious reasons. He made a call on his break and was told Marilyn, his loan officer, was not available. I called a few minutes later for Marilyn's email (still unavailable) because he cannot make/receive phone calls. I was told THEY DO NOT HAVE EMAIL! THE ONLY WAY TO COMMUNICATE WITH THEIR EMPLOYEES IS IN PERSON OR BY PHONE DURING THEIR BUSINESS HOURS! So, the bottom line is do not use them if you are in any kind of a hurry because there is literally no modern way to communicate with them. I am a mortgage underwriter and if this is the way we did business, we would have no customers. If you feel nostalgic for the days before technology, this is the place for you. read more

Their on line system is the worst system I've ever had to deal with. It takes me at least 6 times to log on and sometimes it takes up to a dozen times to get to my page. So you understand, this has been going on for well over a year. I've spoken with them several times and have written the, for lack of a better term, manager, with no results. The person that has tried to help me is nice and has good intentions but still without results and I've been a "member" for 39 years. I guess they really don't care, so I'll have to look elsewhere for my financial needs unless they fix the problem. Shameful way to conduct business to such a loyal member. Since I'm required to, I'll indicate a one star rating, but in reality they've earned a -5 star rating. I can't imagine the negative impact this has had on the business. read more

I also hate to give a local business one start, but RICU is a joke. We opened an account and had nothing but trouble from the start. We had to go in several times to get each pin number set up (you need to go in to actually get your pin number to do online banking). The online banking is something from the stone ages. No mobile app, no mobile deposit, nothing. The next complaint I have is that any deposit you make in the form of a check (you know, like your paycheck), will be held by RICU for 7 business days before you can use the money. That's right, they will not let you access your own deposits for 7 business days. The customer service I've had has also been horrible and the woman on the phone actually laughed when I asked if she could reverse a fee. The hassle and unprofessional service is not worth anything you get in return for supporting local. We will be closing our account and switching to a more customer attentive bank. read more

ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE getting a loan from this place! I recently got a loan and when you try to make a payment online you are gonna wanna pull your hair out. I have tried entering every since member/account number on every piece of paper they have sent me in the mail and not a single one has allowed me to sign in and make a simple payment. Absolutel horror show they should be paying me for the emotional stress and bullshit they have put me through just trying to make a simple payment. I would never recommend this bank. The person in the loan office was absolutely rude. After 2 different locations we saw several people who would give us wrong or made up information. Clearly there is a lack of proper training or hiring well educated people who know what that are doing. It was an absolutely frustrating experience. They lost all my future business as well as any referrals. read more

I would suggest you do not apply for auto loan thru RICU unless you are prepared for total chaos and incompetence!! Submitted an auto loan application online over week ago, and still no answer. Loan manager Jim seems disorganized, does not check his incoming faxes or calls back!! I have had several auto loans with RICU over the years and this will be the last!
