I was exchange student here for a year 2022-2023. People here are amazing and I've met lots of friends here. Campus is beautiful from the outside, but mh biggest concerns are the dorms. Some buildings are super old. I lived in West Village, Townsend and Stewart Halls. In the first one I needed to live with 5 other people, who were not carying about others space. Then moved to Townsend and got problems with big cockroaches in my room. Even though I kept it clean, cockroaches appeared out of nowhere and I was super scared of them, so I needed to sleep in common room for 2 days, because Pest Control works onky Monday and Thursday at mornings and nobody else could help me. I changed my dorm to Stewart and the room is finally good. Spacious, big windows and lot sof sunlight, but I saw cockroaches again in the corridor. I don't know what's the problem here with them, but I find then super annoying and scary. Other than that, in the breaks I, as an exchange student stayed on campus during most of the breaks and the fact that they ban meal plans during the breaks is still a question. You basically need to pay additional price in order for them to work. I don't know how it's dor US students, but beside awesome people, I find this place wearing pink glasses and ignoring problems that people have. read more

As an alumni, I admit I have a love-hate relationship with Rhodes. A very decent education, but with a diminishing reputation... While I appreciate the wonderful professors and people I have met, I was disappointed with the Rhodes administration. Rhodes College simply does not take diversity seriously, and racial profiling and socioeconomic discrimination does occur on campus. However, I have met amazing and life altering professors that have made me a better person. I would just be a bit wary if you're coming from a more liberal area of the country or a minority of any sort. read more

This campus looks amazing! The new building next to the music building was a hole in the ground a year ago, but is beginning to blend in with the rest of the architecture. My god that library is a marvel of modern engineering! This is Rhodes college, formerly known as Southwest. They are strong in music, sports, and even learning the bible. The physics department is said to be the best around and they even have an observatory to prove it! I have played for plenty of college parties here in my days of rock and roll, but what brings me back here as a middle aged man is the study of classical music. I am a Beethovian. I love all things Beethoven. There just aren't many teachers in and around Memphis who can help an advanced student who is serious about learning this extremely complex music. My solution is to study music one on one with a college professor who has a masters and a doctorate in music. He has two Steinway grand pianos in his office! He charges twice the going rate, but his level of expertise deserves no less. Even with his master skills, he still studies and takes lessons of his own! Sometimes it isn't always about learning from someone better than you, it's about learning from your peers. Believe it or not, I think I taught him a thing or two. Nope. Just kidding. Wishful thinking I guess! Rhodes is just about the best place for an aspiring musician who wants to truly learn the complexities of music. There's a difference between having a natural talent in one's ability to play, and the knowledge it takes to understand music and even compose! Rhodes has a tendency to prefer Steinway pianos and provides quality instruments. The recital hall is incredible and they host plenty of concerts open to the public! Best of all, they are free to attend. I only wish I could enroll in their full program and earn a degree. The reality of life though, is I have to provide for my family, and that degree wouldn't give them the support they need. It gives me personal satisfaction to say the least when I am able to advance my skills. Whether you are a musician, a music major, a music lover, or just need a little help from time to time, if the music stores fail to give you the educational knowledge you desire, Rhodes college is the place to do it! read more

Rhodes College provided a great learning experience for me, in and out of the classroom. It's hard to narrow down what to review regarding a 5 year college experience, so I'll list a few things that stick out in my mind... The Honor Code - It's a tradition with every incoming class to get all dress up and sign the college's honor code, where you pledge not to lie, cheat, or steal, and report anyone you see doing any of the above. I actually was elected to serve on the student run Honor Council (which enforces the code) and presided over a few cases where students were suspended or expelled, until I started feeling like a hypocrite and declined to serve on the council for a 2nd year. But for the most part, the code worked as there were no shortage of campus snitches. The Rat - Our school for some reason had a stone, inscribed, statue of a rodent on the lawn in front of the cafeteria. (and no, I never bothered to read what it said) So that ended up being the affectionate nickname for our dining hall. Sounds a little weird to say "I'm going to the Rat for dinner", doesn't it? Project Townhouses - I found out after a few late night, alcohol inspired, estrogen driven, encounters with my roommate and her sorority sisters, that I needed a change of scenery. So the second semester of my freshman year, our Resident Hall Director offered me the opportunity to live in one of the 6 on campus project townhomes, which were normally reserved for upper classmen. So I moved and in return received a townhome complete with shared kitchen and living room facilities, 3 bedrooms, and 5 people, all working on the project of exploring campus views on the issue of diversity. Pretty sweet deal for a freshman, don't ya think? Rites of Spring - Annual campus ritual that's closed to the public, where bands are invited on campus to play for an excessively intoxicated group of of-age, but mostly underage students. It's basically a 2 day music festival that everybody looks forward to...unless you hate being around drunk people. There have been some pretty good headliners in the past (e.g. Run DMC, Indigo Girls) and the biggest name while I was there was probably Vertical Horizon. On the flip side, Rites to Play happens during the same weekend, where students organize a carnival on campus for elementary children from the Memphis community. I had lots of fun painting faces and supervising musical chairs. Life or Search - Rhodes isn't necessarily a "religious" school per se, but everyone who comes to Rhodes has to choose either the Search or Life track. If you choose Life, you spend your next 2 years taking religious study classes that examine the bible in more detail. If you choose Search, you spend the 1st year studying how the bible came to being, how it was influenced by man, and then examining various gospels in light of texts from various disciplines including philosophy, politics, literature, and history. Your 2nd year is spent specializing in one area -- I chose philosophy, which I almost majored in until my my mom said hellz no!. The Search track in my opinion, is probably at the heart of why one might choose to go to a liberal arts college. I loved it. Ahh..this review has brought back so many memories for me. I didn't know this place existed. However we attended a Memphis Rock N Romp there this past weekend. The campus is gorgeous, like something out of Oxford University. The facilities were great and I was in awe of the amazing architecture. read more

I attended many years ago and have very few good things to say about the school besides that the campus is beautiful. The student body lacked diversity, and some professors were mean/rude and didn't care much about the students or even particularly like teaching, and didn't seem like happy people in general. Most of the professors weren't particularly leaders in their field and the grading was pretty harsh. When wanting to branch out from a scientific major and try out creative writing, I sincerely tried hard and got an unnecessarily low grade. It discourages one from doing just what college is supposed to be about. Memphis is a dangerous and not particularly interesting city. When I had a serious problem with a professor who acted very inappropriately towards me, the administration wasn't any help in holding that professor accountable. In reading more recent reviews it unfortunately sounds like not much has changed. A more liberal/progressive student, especially from the west or northeast may find it very difficult to assimilate here. read more

Two sons were interested in Rhodes. We visited both times and were quite impressed with the beautiful campus. Unfortunately, that is the best part. Academically, Rhodes will flat out tell you that they do not prepare you for a career, but to be well rounded. If that is your thing, then spend the $250,000 for your degree and enjoy your well-roundness! Remove the scenic campus aspect, and this is just another mediocre expensive private liberal arts school trying to sound like an Ivy league school. BTW, both sons are attending higher rated schools with a 90%+ employment rate post graduation at a fraction of the cost. read more

We went here on our trip to Memphis basically because one of my best friends went here and graduated six years ago so I wanted to see the campus. I will have to say that if my parents had taken me on a college tour here, there is an incredibly high chance that I would have attended here. And this is coming from someone that ended up in California for school. It is absolutely gorgeous and reminded me a lot of Oxford in England. read more

I am not writing this review as one who as attended Rhodes, but as a visitor to their campus. Aesthetically speaking, Rhodes brings a kind of beauty to Memphis that is reminiscent of England, with tudor-style buildings and plate glass. When we asked if we could take pictures at the gate, we were told 'no, unfortunately. It's a very prestigious school, and they're apparently very protective of the grounds. read more

Great school. It's has both great academia and parties. It really small for a college so gossip wise it can be very high school. It's small enough so that you will be known as an individual so don't do anything stupid when you're new here because you'll be known for it. You're going to want to go greek regardless because it is the social scene here. Ask anyone for the stereotypes of each house-know they'll talk their own up regardless. read more
