Excellent experience all around. Good choice if you have something to celebrate, some cash to burn,…read moreor simply like good food. The building is unassuming, the interior stylish with dark walls, sparse decoration, and quality table linen, yet the atmosphere is pretty relaxed. We went here to celebrate our anniversary and totally enjoyed it. We chose the 5-course degustation menu (see pics for details) and a more regular three-course offering (snails, barramundi, creme brûlée). The food was brought out at nicely spaced intervals (course 2&3 in the degustation came with no counterpart on the other side, but hey, what can you do - I guess you offer you dinner partner a tiny bite ;) ). The food was all seriously delicious and clearly prepared with both skill and passion. Beautifully presented too, as the pictures show. It is hard to pick a winner out of all the goodness, but the Veal (also available as a main on the regular menu) was simply amazing. In the degustation menu, the wines were really good (although I can't comment on the pairings per sé). I have very little doubt that we will revisit this place soon (celebration or not)! [EDIT: For those curious about the prices, we spent $220, but that included the $125 degustation + wine pairing, a three-course, two glasses of wine, and coffee. A meal of one main with either a starter or dessert and a glass of wine will cost around $65, which seems quite reasonable.]

The short version: Having tasted 10 of the 15 things available on the menu here, I think I can…read moresafely say that the food here is mostly very good to excellent. I say "mostly" because I noticed a tendency towards over-salting things. That happened relatively often but only ever with the minor/accompanying elements, so it wasn't a major distraction. Food score - 4.5 / 5.0. The rant version: My wife and I dined here for our anniversary. The food was very good overall but we had a bit of a problem with the service. The issue was that we wanted to order one 7-course tasting menu and one 5-course a la carte menu to maximize the number of different things that we could try. The staff promptly told us that couldn't be done, because both menus had a "minimum 2 per table" policy. That policy isn't stated anywhere on their printed or online menu, and it makes me wonder what they do if they ever get a table of 1 (or 3). When we pressed them on the issue they said the reason was because they wouldn't be able to time things properly so that the dishes came out together. We told them that was fine, that they could bring out the dishes however they wanted as we were just going to share everything anyways, and that we just wanted to enjoy our anniversary dinner and try as many different things as possible. Still they refused, and insisted on telling us what we could and could not order. Personally I consider that a completely unacceptable level of service. Unless the restaurant is paying us to eat there, the restaurant has no business telling us what we can and can't order (hint: the restaurant was not paying us to eat there; quite the opposite, in fact). Doubly so when we're there for a special occasion and the restaurant is well aware of the fact. So for their perplexingly poor customer service, I'm deducting a point from their score. The food was certainly good, but there's just no excuse for being TOLD what to eat. Overall score - 3.5 / 5.0.

My very first Australian review! I have been waiting god knows how many years to write up my Aussie…read morereviews because god knows how many of them I have piling up through the years from visiting my family and friends down under. I am happy to report that my first review will be Montrachet, a place my parents love to go to and brought my son and I when we last visited. When I was at university, Paddington was one of the hot spots where we'd go hang out at. Montrachet is located in Paddington. Like the other reviewer said their opening times are limited and you have to make reservations way in advance. During some times of the year they are closed for weeks on end so it makes it really inconvenient if you're wanting to go dine there. On the night of our visit we arrived to find the dining room bustling - which I was told is typical. Since there were four of us we ordered appetizers and entrees (in Australia, entrees are appetizers while entrees are referred to as 'mains'). We had Morton bay bugs and quail to start, both my mom's favorites. Then we moved onto duck and steak and my son had a lobster ravioli. I remember thinking everything was good but didn't blow me away. I had heard my folks rave on and on about this place so I guess my expectations were high. But then, both my parents mentioned that everything they tasted that evening wasn't up to par with their previous visits -- they visit at least once a month -- and my mom even apologized that it happened on the night I visited because it was such a rare opportunity that I was able to come. The chef/owner came out to say hello to my parents and my dad naturally mentioned that I was a blogger blah blah and since I was taking photos of the meal the chef asked me to please write about Montrachet. Unfortunately I didn't blog about it and am glad that finally I am able to. I didn't go home this summer. Maybe I will next summer. I know my girlfriend celebrated her birthday there a few months ago and had a fantastic time. I guess I need to go back again. 3.5 stars!
