I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet! It was one of those places that I never got around to visiting until I was almost done with college and now every time I go back to Angola I have to make a stop there. This is one of those hidden gems in Angola... It's a hole-in-the-wall sort of place, appearance-wise. It's kind of charming, in a kitschy sort of way. The Rice Bowl is not a buffet. You order a dish, and it comes with egg drop soup and a super amazing egg roll. And rice, of course. Those egg rolls are great.. I wish I could eat a whole meal of just the egg rolls! Whatever dish you order is going to be cooked fresh just for you. One of my friends always asks to have extra veggies or cashews added to his General Tso's chicken, the owner of the place always teases him about it (all in fun!). For $7, you really get a lot of food. Way better than any Chinese buffet, that's for sure. The owner of The Rice Bowl is so friendly and fun to chat with too! read more

Hands down a five star rating. I'm a trucker, and wasn't able to make it home on time for Christmas. I decided on getting some local grub at Rice Bowl, let me tell you. I accidentally ordered an ungodly amount of food. Probably enough to feed a family of 6, but for just 30 bucks flat! The egg rolls are huge, and super delicious. Chicken fried rice fantastic. The woman instead (I forgot to catch her name), was probably one of the nicest women I've ever met. Super welcoming and the type of person that likes to get a little reading in her customers. Worse Chinese food... Ever! Lo mein.. no veggies, slimy noodles, chicken had strange texture the seasoning had a large presence of black pepper but lack of any traditional lo mein flavors. Crab Rangoon was awful; a very strange, off-putting flavor and there are no words for the shrimp with lobster sauce.. I rarely fear eating it all of this went into the trash a waste of $33. read more

If you rated this restaurant less than 5 starts, you will never be able to be happy. Yes, the building is dated but its clean and I absolutely love older looking establishments. Takes me back to being a kid. The owner though, she is the most sweetest lady. She is very helpful on choosing a great menu item for someone on their first visit. I got the amazing Fried Rice with Chicken (lots of chicken) and an Egg Roll. Everything was delicious. I travel and visit Angola once a month. I promise this will be a regular stop. I order take out of Mongolian Beef, my wife picked it up. I don't know what it was in the box, Brown Sauce, lots of white onion, four pieces of mushroom. six pieces of beef (that was tough as shoe leather). Okay so first, I know it looks a little scary outside and maybe even inside, but the owner is absolutely the sweetest and knows my order by the sound of my voice. I have an extremely sensitive nervous system and immune system and I can essentially only eat bland diet foods, rarely even meat as it physically makes me sick, but her chicken is the ONLY chicken I can eat. Always thoroughly cooked, not heavy and overwhelming on my stomach, and it tastes so good. Second, the fried rice. AMAZING. It's like, kind of sweet somehow, but it balances perfectly. First of all this was the worst experience Ive ever had with a food/business in general. Me and my fiancé went here for dinner on a Friday night at 6:30. Ended up waiting a hour an a half for our appetizers (potstickers). Than proceeded to wait another 30 minutes for our entrees. Both of our meals were completely bland and our "fried rice" was mush and stone cold. We ended up only take a bite of our meals and didn't want to eat anymore out of disappointment. After waiting another 20 minutes to talk to the owner/chef, she first had to evaluate our plates to see how much we ate then accused us of eating them and trying to get a free meal. Why would someone whose starving be at your business for 2+ hours waiting for food, try to pull a fast one? In my opinion, I would never suggest this place to anyone friend nor foe. Side note: there were only 3 other tables seated and we feel bad for the lonely waitress since everyone who was there had complaints about the food or timing of the service. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants. I have eaten here since I was a little girl and I have never had bad food or service! If you can look past the dingy lighting and maybe some dust then you are in for a real treat! The food is authentic, cooked to order. If you can't find something on the menu, just ask! I ordered Moo Goo Gai Pan but wanted it in garlic sauce and joked with my boyfriend about broccoli. No problem! I was surprised with yummy crispy broccoli with my dish. No extra charge! She remembered my boyfriend and his son from a previous visit and even remembered what they ordered! You can't get that in a big restaurant!!! My boyfriend ordered Kung Pao Beef, his son ordered Sweet and Sour Chicken, we had an order of 10 crab Rangoon with hot tea and a Root Beer. We had the BEST egg drop soup with our meal and excellent fried rice. Our total was $29.50. You also get almond cookies along with fortune cookies. The food is excellent as I have said but honestly the owner/hostess/waitres/cook/busser is the reason to go. She is friendly, funny and really cares that you enjoy your experience. 1st time visit here, stopped in for a bowl of soup & egg roll . Hot & Sour soup was Ok, I prefer mine spicy. Egg roll was large & not very flavorful. The hot mustard sauce container & sauce looked ancient. Wife had chicken soup & egg roll, she said it was decent. The decor is original , like from the 60's , doubt we will go back. The first thing you will notice upon entering The Rice Bowl is an overwhelming yet unidentifiable stench in the entryway. Once you enter the restaurant, you no longer notice so we decided to stay. The prices were good and menu offered a nice variety of your typical Chinese restaurant fare. The waitress was incredibly rude and I wished she would just go away. She kept making comments about what we were eating and how much we were eating. My daughter tried to order a soda and was told she didn't need it and could only have water. Seriously. When our dinner for 4 arrived, my Mother bit into a pea pod and exclaimed it was the freshest, crunchiest perfectly cooked vegetable that it could be. The fried rice is a perennial favorite. Brilliant! We used to go to a buffet in Battle Creek regularly for years; this is a total non-starter now... are you kidding?? Rice Bowl or bust. The proprietress "Charlene" (Xiao Lin, or Hsao Lin or whatever) is a goofy sweetheart. We go there all the time, with any excuse, and recently when a friend of mine and I had a birthday, she brought out a massive plate of yummy noodle salad (long noodles symbolize a wish for long life in Chinese culture) just as a nice gift for us. Neighbors down the road in Montgomery MI go there as a special treat and I understand there are some folks from Ohio that are willing to drive a lot of miles for some Rice Bowl take-out. The egg rolls are so good, we've been threatening for years that we will make a meal of them, exclusively, some day. For me, this is the measure by which all Chinese restaurants can be judged. I love expected places like this. I read the reviews and decided to take a chance. I'm so glad I did. Though it was nothing fancy, the food was excellent and in good proportions. Didn't take long to get to the table either. The waitress/cook/possible owner of the place was Very welcoming and even joked with us as soon as we can through the door as if we were regulars. We had high hopes from the other two reviews. The hostess was friendly and outgoing. However, we were also met at the door by an unidentifiable funky odor. Having been to our fair share of hole-in-the-wall asian joints, we were undeterred. We were seated and ordered drinks. The AC was on but having a hard time keeping up in the 90+ degree heat. The vinyl table cloths were sticky. The deal breaker was small specks of what looked like mold growing on the menus. I informed the hostess we would be dining elsewhere and offered to pay for the drinks she had not served yet. She declined my offer and we went down the street for dinner instead. read more

Best authentic Chinese food in Angola! Friendly service. Fresh egg rolls, not pre-packaged!

I kept hearing how good this place was so I decided to give it a try, so me and a friend went there. We walked in and ordered the 4 family A special. The lady wouldn't give us the chicken chow mien because we didn't know what it was...so she changed our order and headed into the kitchen. While we waited for our food we found it was extremely dirty. We found mold in a few different locations in the main eating area. There were tables that were not cleaned from the previous people who were there, mind you we were the only ones in the restaurant the whole time our food was being cooked. I found on the wall a junction box tact to the outside of a wall with no cover with wires showing. I went into the bathroom and there was piss everywhere...in the sink, on the knobs for the sink, floor, basically everywhere but in the toilet. The place had a horrific smell to it, after a very long wait, we finally get our food. This is when I saw the kitchen look dirty, with appliances that look it was from 1950, not joking this was a fridge was from the 1950's, I saw a fly swatter on the counter. Finally we go to eat our food, the sweet and sour pork was disgusting, we couldn't finish it. The fried rice was ok, but had nothing in the rice besides pork. This place was bad, I do not understand why everyone is saying this place is good. It needs to be shut down for health code violations. I feel sick tonight after eating the food. I will not be going back there, and I will not be telling people to go there. read more
