This is a very unfortunate review that I'm going to write unfortunate because the Great Wall has exceptional Chinese food. I owned a Chinese restaurant with my ex-husband. I've been to China several times. I know good Chinese food. I went there tonight for dinner. I had the combination plate number two which is egg foo young with fried rice and an egg roll. I chose the mushroom option with white rice and egg drop soup with water to drink. The menu says $12.99. when I got my bill, it said $15. When I questioned the young man, he said I'll get my boss. She came out and was very angry that I questioned. She said because egg prices have gone up the price on the egg foo young has gone up. I said there isn't a change on the menu. Yeah yeah I know she said egg prices have gone up. I said I understand but there's no sticker or change on the menu. Yeah but eggs are expensive now. I said yes. I understand that but there's no sticker and there is no sign anywhere that says egg. Foo young is now $2.01 more than the posted price. She said okay. I fix it. Rang up my bill and said $17.99. I said no. The meal is $12.99 and I had water so it should be in the $13 range. She said no egg prices have gone up. I said I understand that but there are no signs in the restaurant and there is no change or not on the menu. That said options with eggs will be more. The other thing that I noticed was that they put a tip on the bill. There is also no sign saying that a tip will automatically be added to the bill. She then said this is Hillsdale. I'll do whatever the f*** I want to do. I went outside and as I'm going out, two young girls were going in to place an order that their mom had ordered online, I told the young girls and their mom who had opened the car door, that they should watch how much they're charged because they're charging prices that are not on the menu and they are also adding a gratuity to the bill without acknowledgment of that. The owner then came outside yelling how I was f****** crazy that I'm a f****** crazy woman. I said no ma'am I went by the menu prices she said come in. I'll tell you how f****** crazy you are. This is a vegan review. THE GOOD: They have a vegetable menu, thank goodness. I ordered a vegetable with garlic sauce dish with tofu added. They say they don't use MSG in their dishes. Taste was good, portions was good. THE BAD: Price was a little high. For adding bean curd or tofu to a vegetable dish they charge extra $3! Also when I called in for order, the lady told me to hurry up because she has more customers to attend to, I said, "I'm your customer too!" I guess she was busy that day because she had her kids helping her with the register. On another day I came to dine in and her two cute little daughters came in from school and she started yelling at them both in the restaurant and in the kitchen. I would never forget the expressions on the poor little girls as they were getting a tongue lashing and I felt so bad for them, not to mention how awkward it was. We've been here a few times before and while the food has never been exceptional, it's at least always been edible. This time it was not. I got the curry chicken and my husband got the seafood soup. Both were inedible. The curry chicken tasted so offputting and very metallic for some reason. The seafood soup had an obvious frozen food taste and was swimming in a clear broth that made you wonder how long before you started vomiting. The service has always been rushed which has normally been fine, but combined with everything made it an experience I won't be going back to. This place has never been my favorite but now it's worse since it changed hands . I grew up with the chefs at Yen king in Jackson in the 80s and 90s and Theirs's isn't the same it used to be either but I get the flavors I ordered and fresh vegetables just much smaller portions than back in the day and no longer unlimited rice . I only go to Great wall here in Hillsdale because it's close to home and some stuff is so so. , It's cheap takeout , you get a lot for your money .The soups and egg rolls are good ..(I've spent a lot of time in So- Cal. and have eaten a lot of Excellent Chinese food .Not Americanized .)and they do it cheaply with Fresh Large portions and large cuts of Vegetables and lots of fresh flavor just on a a take out menu) . Garlic seems sparse at the great wall and there seems to be the same bottled sauce used for nearly everything . I have to ask for General Tso's to be hot ? The point in General Tso's Is to be Hot ! It's changed from Fresh to frozen vegetables . The kind with the Crinkle cut carrots ,There's a significantly lower amount of Chinese vegetables used .and if you order add ins to your veggies They're sparsely added ,It's obvious the budget matters more than the Quality of the product and experience .One dish isn't a big difference from another .Unless you order something that's meant to me served as a single item . If you order a dish with a certain sauce to flavor it it tastes all the same but occasionally a slight difference . I've ordered several dishes from here and the sauces used are to much alike to matter .The sweet and sour tastes cheap ,To a Local it will be Gourmet because they eat a lot of Diner food and this place is the only Chinese food they've ever known Everyone whos grown up here loves it if they like Chinese food at all . Sometimes the Meat is slightly spoiled tasting with an off flavor like its sat in the refrigerator to long but isn't going to kill you . The iced tea is often spoiled and the soda machines need cleaned so I might get moldy soda , The machines should be cleaned weekly and must not be . Sometimes its fine ,Its an adventure when I come here. I've known people who never notice a moldy soda machine so if your one of those you wont mind . The staff can be quite rude depending on the day and if they get your order wrong or you want to change anything ,it comes with an attitude .I have food allergies and have to ask for things removed and it seems to be difficult to change things out .I'm very nice about it ,One waitress takes the order (one doesn't speak English the best but she does try) . The cook comes out annoyed . It's just a basic dining room set up and its fairly clean .So you wont feel like you visited china for the afternoon for sure. The bathrooms need a redo and they need paper towel instead of a nasty handblower that were called out in recent news for blowing feces and germs all over your hands when you use them (This is a blunder by many in our area) . .They're also dingy looking although I'm sure they clean them often, I keep coming back somedays are better then others and I keep hoping it will improve .. Let me preface my review by confessing a few truths. #1. This is Hillsdale Michigan, not Guangzhou. #2. Yes the food is not terribly authentic compared to my many experiences in China. BUT...they make Chinese food for the good citizens of Hillsdale who like what they like. I have been all over China in the last ten years on business trips. I have had some meals that were epic...and lots that were just o.k. The nice woman who waited on us was more then willing to let me tell her EXACTLY how I wanted her to make my various dishes. No MSG...Kung Pao Chicken with just four ingredients.... and on and on and on. Food arrives and it was precisely prepared as I asked for it. Was it as good as the food in the little village where I had an apartment for 5 years? Of course not. Was it pretty good chow considering it is in Hillsdale Michigan? Yes, yes it is. Service is slow....but the food they bring out is freshly made and if you tell them exactly how you want it...you will be happy with the result. Ask them how they prepare their Mongolian Beef. Don't like green bell peppers? Tell them to not put them in there. Want fried rice but do not want egg? Tell them and you will have your wish fulfilled. Making Chinese food is pretty simple. You have a hot Wok...and you toss in stuff as you go. Find out in advance what they plan on tossing in...and take out what you don't want...and VOILA' ....the perfect plate of food prepared just like you would make if you knew how. read more

Maybe I am not as much of a Chinese Connoisseur as my fellow reviewers, but I think this place has rather tasty Chinese food. The egg rolls are good, and the crab rangoons are amazing, quite possibly my favorite item in the restaurant. Also delicious, at least in my opinion, is the shrimp fried rice and the pepper steak. I do not feel that the shrimp fried rice tastes like cigarettes, unless cigarettes have recently acquired a shrimpy, soy-saucey, scalliony taste. Some dishes are a bit salty, but I feel that this is a problem shared by many Chinese restaurants. Also, the restaurant does look a bit run-down, but hey, you came here to eat, not to look at a contemporary display of interior design. Recently we made our first trip to this resturaunt and the first time we had an amazing dinner, everything tasted fresh and vibrant and the customer service was great but very very slow. Here's the review of the first night ordering a menu based dinner, the second will be of the buffet. - Food was awesome, fresh and tasty. - The Hot and Sour soup isn't the traditional soup with tofu and what not, it's some sort of house specialty. Once you get used to it, it's AWESOME, if there was a reason to return to this place, that soup would be it. - Wait staff were slow, understaffed on the day we went. - Waitress was rude to other tables (not ours) but it was noticed. - The South entrance and dining area of this establishment is run down, it was the first thing we noticed and really made us nervous about their commitment to at least making the food worth the trip. The office is in tatters, the walls are cracking, stained and there was water damage right above our table. Second Trip: The Buffet The waitress we had a few nights before ranted and raved about the buffet, said it didn't offer as much as the only other Chinese buffet in town, but that the food was exceptional. Here's what we noticed: - Food was old, obviously having been cooked at the start of the buffet hours and left there to dry out on the buffet for at least an hour and a half before we walked in. - The buffet wasn't being maintained, no new food was being replenished in the hour that we sat there dining. - Waitstaff was again, extremely slow, I almost wonder why they haven't either given each table a pitcher of soda or a fountain drink to access.. I could have literally gone down to the gas station 2 or 3 blocks away twice before getting a refill on a soda. - Soda glasses were small, in two or three deep draws of the straw we drained our glasses. Thus needing a refil 3 or 4 times before we gave up and settled on stopping at a gas station on the way home for some real drinks. - The selection was worse than I could have imagined, I expected at minimum some baked fish, a shrimp dish, maybe even oysters. Seafood salad, with a mix of shrimp, crab and squid would have been nice. It hardly was a buffet, it was more like some small company potluck with a few mystery dishes that had been picked over for hours. All in all, I wouldn't recommend anyone to go to this establishment unless you are going for the menu items instead of the buffet. I know my family won't be returning to this establishment except for maybe the occasional Hot and Sour soup carry out. I'd recommend the other Chinese place for proper buffet experience. (the one near Walmart, keep in mind they aren't open on Mondays any longer.) read more

We reliably get great service and good food from Great Wall since we tried them out in 2017. They have quick turnaround take-out and fair prices. Their orange chicken, sweet and sour chicken, and Mongolian beef are our favorites, although I haven't tried their whole menu. General Tsao is also good. We enjoy their pork fried rice, too. For a little town an hour from any decent sized city, consistency and plenty of hours can be a lot to ask for, so please remember the context when you're rating little, family-owned businesses in a town of 8,000 people. read more

I would recommend completely replacing your recipes. The egg rolls are ok but I have a feeling they are just bought frozen. I think the business is declining as a result of the poor food quality. One example I want to share to reflect what I'm talking about. I have ordered both Cashew Chicken and Szechuan Chicken. The sauce/gravy tasted identical. Both way over salted and the only difference I could find is the the Cashew Chicken had a couple cashews in it. The Szechuan Chicken didn't have a single pepper in it and is advertised as "Spicy". This is not the case. Nothing in the dish is spicy or even resembles "spice". It honestly tastes like soy sauce, white pepper, and corn starch. Having visited this restaurant several years ago and being extremely pleased with the food it is a shame that the food quality has declined to this extent. If the owner is reading this. Please just rethink your recipes. All people want is good food. You could have the shabbiest hole in the wall and no one would care as long as the food is good. read more

Fried Rice tasted like Cigarettes, seriously, like it was fried with cigarettes... Service was super slow, waitress said verbatim "I have such a bad memory, you think it would be better being a waitress" "I hope your food wasn't too terrible" Plastic string in one food item... Fortune Cookies brought out unwrapped on a credit card tray... Shrimp fried in oil that wasn't hot enough so it was like putting an oil ball in your mouth. The Great Wall was recently taken over by new management, and I know that a year ago, no Hillsdale student would have dared to eat there out of fear of getting food poisoning, it has made a HUGE change. I took a chance today. What a surprise. At 6 pm there was only one other couple. Their food arrived steaming hot and fresh looking! More that enough food for 4. My order of Mongolian Beef. Usually it has onion and green pepper, not here. This came with broccoli, onion, mushrooms, water chestnuts, bamboo, no green pepper and that was fine for me. The food was fresh, hot and tasty. This place is under new management!!! I've lived in Hillsdale for four years and after trying the food twice a few years ago, I swore it off. It was disgusting. But that is not the case anymore!!!! I seriously question anyone's high opinion of this restaurant. 4 and 5 stars? What do these people normally eat? Dirt? It didn't start out bad, we all agreed the soup was good. The rest of the meal went down hill and fast. It took 1 hour and 40 mins to complete the meal though nobody really ate anything after the soup. Our appetizers were brought out cold after our soup was served. The fried shrimp was oily and rubbery, the BBQ meat so tough jerky would have been preferred in a sauce that was nothing like BBQ. The lo mien probably wouldn't have been bad if not for the overpowering effect of dumping an entire salt shaker in the mix. The tea was nothing more than colored water, hopefully the dark color was due to some sort of tea leaf. There was lipstick on a tea cup and plastic in someone's entree. What I would really like to know is how fried rice can taste exactly like cigarettes? In short if you need to eat Chinese in Hillsdale eat soup. If you are daring your friends to eat the most disgusting thing you can think of, get the fried rice. read more

Not real sure why these others seem to have had a bad experience. I have eaten here many times and have taken out many times and food is always good. It is in an older building that dates back to the late 1800s but this is Hillsdale. Maybe if you go there with a good attitude as we do.
