My first introduction to Second Avenue was on a cold spring day a few years back; as we rounded a corner on a closed up shop I wondered if we'd gone too far. A moment later the shop front appeared, blocked in by rows of Land Rovers parked right in front of the shop window. Inside there was quiet as women fanned through beautiful silks and suits hung along the wall racks. Lo and behold, I found out they're a part of the same company/brand. How cool!! Same great products, same great prices. They even had a fully operating hair and nail salon inside. I barely had any vacant space in my luggage, but I absolutely had to grab some good deals and exit quickly lol. The store is huge and the various sections are easy to browse. It was also easy to spot employees walking around if you needed to ask for help.

I was expecting some lovely vintage inspired frocks. What I found was a store I would call goth girl heaven. There were lots of corsets, short skirts with crinoline that peaked out the bottom, striped thigh-high socks, plaid pants with attached straps, bells and whistles, and even velvet bell-sleeved atrocities that looked exactly like the way I pictured adult witches wearing when I was 12. Yes, amongst all this was a healthy selection of retro-inspired dresses. They were much more 40's inspired than 50s or 60s, with the main thrust being the nu-pin-up look. I will say that I LOVE the pin-up culture and style of dress, and this would be a great place for modern day Betties to come find their wardrobes. But overall I felt the shop was just way too costumey and not wearable enough for the average gal.

It is like a H&M and New Look type store, over 3 floors, that made minimal sense to me. Lots of shiny and sparkly clothes but there are lots of them and you would really need a sense of what you want when you come in here. Judging from all the distinctive yellow "Forever 21" bags around town, there are several people who know exactly what they want! No doubting they have a bit of everything; day, office, night, sleep, under, over, men's, women's, childrens, foot-wear for every wear and the prices are nice and reasonable. This shop is extensive. I will have to come back here another day and give it another go.

They didn't have the item either, but they had some really cute, curated pieces of great designers. They were happy to send me to a competitors storefront as I continued my "scavenger hunt" for this piece... even though they weren't profiting off of it. I ended up purchasing an item from them anyway (because it was so fun and I also really appreciated the assistance). Reasonable costs and the pieces looked well taken care of. When I'm in Ireland in future, I will definitely visit again!

It fit like a glove and it definitely went home with me. My friend found a Mini Celine bag she'd been wanting for years and took that home with her. The bag was in amazing condition and a few hundred dollars cheaper than back in the states. Service was very friendly and it's definitely worth stopping in to browse.

In fact if I walk into BTs in this coat, shop assistants look at me optimistically as if I might actually be a real prospect; poor them, but I got a good laugh out of it. The husband picked up a gorgeous Alpaca wool coat for around 100 euros, and it too would preserve you in an Antarctic storm. Another good buy was a designer jacket which I'm guessing didn't sell in the designer Siopaella around the corner, good-as-new quality, retail price over a grand, cost me 35 quid, two ripped-out shoulder pads later and a bit of sleeve adjustment, and (to me anyway) what it had lost in standard-issue French chic it gained in cool. The atmosphere in Siopaella is great, the staff are helpful but there's no hard sell, and the chilled out doggie lying contently at the till slapping his tail from time time perfectly accents the general homely, cool vibe. The good stuff turns over fast so keep an eye on Facebook which regularly shows what's come in. The prices can be a bit mixed - I've seen at least one item for a price near enough to what you'd buy it for new in Zara, but in much less than new quality, but generally I find the prices to be good and the quality very high - good as new really. This isn't charity shop prices (or standard of clothes, obviously); it's a good shop for fashionistas who buy often and turnover wardrobe regularly, and these are the types they look to trade with. When I suggested I had some things I could sell there, the wonderfully friendly woman who owns it explained kindly that they're looking for a minimum of around 15 items to begin with (you start an account). My shopping profile doesn't make me the ideal trader, but I am the ideal shopper there. The designer Siopaella around the corner from this one is the same concept, but if you spend a third of the shop value on a dress there, you could be setting yourself back 500 quid. But you'll be wearing Chanel. As I understand, this is a consignment shop, and they keep 40% of anything they sell of yours (either that or you get 40%), and if it doesn't sell, you take it back at the end of the agreed time frame. I delight in telling people about this shop when I get complimented on something - as an alternative to the high-street shopping model, Siopaella gets my vote and not just because of what you save on the pocket; it's just a much more interesting way to shop and it's a more sustainable model too. Full marks to these guys.

I popped into the Dublin branch recently and was not surprised at all that I loved every single thing. The clothing is exceptional in every way. Known for classic silhouettes and perfect construction, Reiss creates some incredible wardrobe staples. The apparel is modern but not overly trendy, classic but not stale or boring. I think I'll call it updated mod. During my recent visit I fell in love with a silk button-sleeve blouse, a sexy pencil skirt with a zipper up the back (ooh la la), and one of the most beautiful coats I've seen in a long, long time. The quality is outstanding, but you pay the price for it! Since it's so expensive, it's best to choose wisely, but if you buy anything here I am sure you won't regret it.
