I've known about Donald Judd for a few years. I'm originally from Texas and learned about Judd…read morethrough this time in Texas - and have seen some of his art in Marfa. But I'd never visited this NYC site until this past Friday, when I took a tour of his house/studio at 101 Spring Street. So who was Judd? An American artist associated with minimalism (although our tour guide told us that Judd didn't like the term). He bought this property in 1968 and used it for his residence and studio even as he started spending more time in Marfa beginning in the 70s. The tour was fantastic. For about an hour and a half, our tour guide showed us several different levels of the property - the kitchen and dining room, the bedroom floor, another floor which served as a design and studio space, and more. The space is - shock shock - minimalist, but there's incredible art (his and others), furniture (including a dining room table he designed that I loooooooved), and other incredible touches. Our tour guide shared incredible stories about Judd and his family. He was informative, friendly, and funny, and the tour was a delight. If you're interesting in art (especially 20th century art and concepts) or architecture (the property has been renovated but in a way intended to preserve the property as it was during Judd's life and use of it) or are just looking for something to do in the City that is a little bit off the beaten path, definitely check out this tour!

And you don't get to take photos beyond the first floor. I didn't mind this, as I learned a lot about Donald Judd. And honestly, he wasn't even the most interesting part of this tour. Our guide, a delightful, knowledgeable woman (I wish I could remember her name--I'm going to start carrying a notebooks around with me)--she not only taught us about Judd, she taught us about art and art theory, and maybe even a little philosophy. This tour isn't for people looking for the flashy or ornamented. Judd's five story SoHo loft is pretty barren, but it's a sight to behold. His furniture isn't cushy or pleasant, but seeing the architecture, thinking about living in such a building--that's pretty extraordinary. Seeing the 12 or greater foot windows--that's something else. Hearing the guide talk about how Judd refused to define his art, how he pushed others to think about how art affected the function of their lives--that's what will stick with me. This is more of an exercise to teach us. Not to wow us or entertain us. And I think that's pretty amazing.

There other extra things you can add to your day pass (we added the - Encounters of the Milky Way) you get to choose. That was kool. From dinosaurs to insects - it was a lot to take in! Showing exotic taxidermy animals in their natural habitat is not new as I have seen it elsewhere, but it is certainly well done. Dinosaurs exhibit is exhaustive. Again I have seen it elsewhere - but not this well done. Although I am not into rocks, the exhibit of minerals and rocks was the best I have seen. Showing elements in their natural state or variety of compounds with chemical formulas was amazing!!!! Frankly this place is now always on the list when visiting NYC !!!

I graduated from NYU in 2010, and I had never visited NYU's Grey Art Museum until last weekend when…read moreI visited with a friend. I was embarrassed (I'm sure I'd walked that block hundreds of times - how could I not have noticed it and visited at least once?), but then I learned that it only moved to this location on Cooper Square in 2024 after it closed its previous location and renovated this space. Whew. That being said, the Grey isn't large (really just one large room for a single exhibition). But - wow - the exhibition we saw (that ended on March 1) was incredible. "Make Way for Berthe Weill: Art Dealer of the Parisian Avant-Garde" surveyed the career of the "first woman modern art dealer," whom I had never heard of before! Berthe Weill purchased works by many modern artists very early in their careers (Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani), and the exhibition included 110 works, many of which were shown at her gallery in Paris before WWII. This exhibition was fascinating and included some incredible works. I also learned so much about her and her gallery, including what happened to her and the gallery during the War. The exhibition is next on its way to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and then off to Paris's Musée de l'Orangerie. So this really was a big deal of an exhibition. The museum is free to visit but they do suggest a donation as you enter. Other than a coat rack, some lockers for bags, bathrooms, and small area selling exhibition catalogues and other books, the Grey is really quite small. But this exhibition really packed a punch. I'll definitely keep my eye out for future exhibits to catch at the Grey.

The Staten Island Museum is one of the many museums/buildings on the historic Snug Harbor grounds…read more Ive never been to Snug Harbor before and this was one of the first buildings I came upon. Front desk staff was super friendly and informative. The museum itself isn't very big and I Probably took about 30 minutes to view it. Id say the admission although suggested was definitely worth it. For me though Id say the architecture of the building itself both inside and out was more interesting to me than the exhibits themselves. Who knew Staten Island had such a good little museum? I look forward to coming here and again and will check their listings of events often.

I am happy to have their teachings! Besides learning that this area of New York city had a terra-cotta factory & a Bubble Gum Factory. We learn about the businesses that employed the locals and the goods that Americans could enjoy! As well as the after effects of industry , environment and public health. Erasure poetry was clever. I had never heard of it before. Taking the pages of a book written by Robert Richard Randall. He was a shipmaster who was very kind to build buildings to house the sailors who worked their lives on boats and had absolutely no money , no housing and no financial security. So now this building has become a museum. Environmental fiber arts exhibit was pretty appropriate. This artist have woven plastics into amazing sculptures. Fascinating. Sad that recycling efforts are so low. So much non biodegradable mater. We could do better if we get outraged enough to contact officials to make a change. You will learn how they succeeded in the past with women activists that were able to ultimately clean up Fresh Kills area! Beautiful nature now. The staff recommended a stroll. I saw the statue of the founder of this building. Homage to such a kind man. The garden outside was a nice. I really recommend coming here. If I had my ukelele. This place was a delight in many many ways .
