My little brother also just went in before the holidays and told me the same thing; that Dr. Lee barely took any time to check his mouth out or ask questions. This is not the kind of dentist you want. Dr. Turner, the previous doctor cleaned my mouth with a water-pick tool which no one has ever done and thoroughly examined my teeth always. I won't be recommending Scottsville Family Dentistry anymore with the way things are going now though with Dr. Solomon Lee until I hear from someone else, I know now that can say they've actually received a full exam. My girlfriend was way overdue a dentist visit, so she really needed a thorough exam, and did not get one.

Though I have comprehensive insurance coverage, she keeps insisting I pay an estimated co-pay at the visit before she receives the covered amount from my insurance. On one occasion, this receptionist actually tried to charge the full amount of my visit and have me pay it before filing an insurance claim. On 2 occasions, this receptionist over-estimated my co-pay amount. On my last visit, this receptionist aggressively tried to convince me to pay an estimated co-pay of $50 at the visit. When I refused and asked her to bill me after she received insurance claim, she warned that I would need to make the payment in a certain number of days. The way that this receptionist behaved, I can see where she could easily manipulate and coerce most patients into over-paying before the insurance coverage is applied. I could possibly excuse the manipulative business practices if they only occurred after the onset of the Covid pandemic and ensuing financial crisis; however, this office had the same policy prior to the pandemic. On the surface, overpayment and eventual credit back to the customer is no big deal. However, if you look at specifics, it a predatory maneuver that unfairly benefits the business: they have your money in their bank making interest for them that they shouldn't have had because you overpaid. That was your money making interest in their bank; not yours, until they credit you back.

I was worried that when I was finally brave enough to go back, I'd get a very unhelpful lecture and not want to go back. Well, this dentist listened to what had happened to me and was able to really put me at ease. My teeth feel better than ever and I look forward to my appointments. The staff there is very courteous and professional. They seem like they genuinely enjoy working there. One perk of working there is that they are closed on Fridays so the employees always have a 3-day weekend, which establishes a much more balanced work-life balance. So not only are they great dentists, but they seem to treat their employees well, and I like supporting businesses that treat their employees like people. Lastly, the office is very clean and it is not peppered with marketing materials or scary pictures of what can happen to your teeth if you don't brush/floss etc. When I was getting my teeth cleaned, I only saw pictures of the hygienist's family and a little cute picture that said something about smiling, bc your smile is beautiful. I can get on board with that!

I rarely write reviews, and the ones I usually write are positive. I went to Virginia Family…read moreDentistry because of the glowing reviews, but my experience was quite different. I've lived in the Richmond area for over 40 years and found their business practices concerning. My 19-year-old son, 17-year-old daughter, and I had appointments last week. After being informed that our new patient visits would total $577 for the same services (since we are self-pay), I agreed to proceed. While I understand my son is an adult, I made it clear that I would be paying for everything. I grew concerned when my dentist suggested pulling a back tooth due to a gap that might cause bacteria issues, despite no current problems plus making recommendation to see their periodontist and pushing a possible the idea of an implant for the tooth; as well as, selling them on their orthodontist after I mentioned that I had seen the orthodontist the day before...which they said they never got x-rays for and it didn't matter because theirs would be different. Additionally, we were told afterward that my daughter's visit would cost $60 more due to extra X-rays, which we were not informed about in advance. It's comparable to a mechanic doing extra work without getting your approval first. I decided to go along with it, appreciating the new patient discount. They then informed us my son would need a deep cleaning instead of a regular one and scheduled it for this week, again without giving any pricing information. When he asked if there would be extra costs, they implied there shouldn't be. Later, we found out this service would cost over $200. This was surprising since we were told otherwise, and they knew I was responsible for the payments. When I asked why we didn't receive a discount for my son's previous visit since he didn't get a cleaning the first time, they said his services were different. How? When the whole purpose of the visit was for a check up and cleaning. After speaking with the office manager, Lauren, I felt unheard and unacknowledged as a customer. She did not apologize or address my concerns, only defending their position. As a business coach and consultant, I've rarely encountered such poor customer service communication outside of the restaurant industry. We ultimately decided not to proceed with the additional service. Virginia Family Dentistry's communication with patients is lacking at best and unethical at worst. They lost out on over $1,500 of upcoming services we would have needed and the lifetime value of a customer. Choose carefully! They will not be getting any recommendations from me. It's noteworthy that they've disabled reviews on Facebook, which might explain the abundance of positive reviews here. I prefer practices that prioritize people over profits and are not influenced by private equity.
