There are multiple issues to consider, including taxes paid when the surviving spouse sells property. A living trust will also help us manage our assets if one or both become incapacitated or have a long-term illness. And many more considerations. While avoiding probate (which can be long and costly in California) for our heirs wasn't our primary consideration, it's certainly another good reason to create a living trust.
