TLDR: Dr. Rosenthal and his staff are everything I was looking for in a doctor/doctor's office - knowledgeable, not rushed, listens to patients, compassionate, and knows the prices of services ahead of time! It's rare that I walk out of a doctor's office wanting to tell everyone how great my experience is, but that's exactly how I felt! I immediately had a positive impression when I walked in while on a work phone call and the staff told me to take my time with my call. As I filled out forms, I was surprised to get a form that actually told me what my insurance covered - the amount of my deductible, the amount I had already met, and what percentage was covered for allergy testing/allergy shots (with CPT codes too). When I asked the cost for each allergy test prick, I was floored when she could actually tell me the cost - $12 a prick or $600 for all 75 pricks. I can't tell you how many times I've walked into a doctor's office and no one knew the cost of procedures or the CPT codes for the procedure. I couldn't believe it when Dr. Rosenthal spent around 30 minutes with me, in an era when most doctors are limited to 10 minutes per patient. He asked me about my allergy history and tailored his plan to what I said. When I said I didn't want to do allergy shots, he was willing to try an alternative to see if that would treat my problems. When I said I didn't want to pay $600 for all 75 allergy tests, he decided to limit the allergy tests to the ones with the most actionable plan for prevention. On top of all that, Dr. Rosenthal is older, so he's got a wealth of knowledge from first hand experience with patients. For example, he had heard of my very crazy MSG allergy and took the time to teach me how MSG affects the nervous system. He knows which allergy medicines tend to work better for most patients. During this pandemic, I have been fortunate to have my Allergy Office open 2 days a week in the Reston Office. Even with cutback hours, its pretty easy to get in on time and these injections are really necessary if you have a high risk condition such as asthma. Sandy who works the front desk and much more is very kind and she noticed my poor excuse for gloves and hand me a few. Cindy the nurse is also very kind, efficient and will look for you if you need samples to tide you over before getting a prescription. All the staff are nice but a shout-out to Sandy and Cindy. Dr. Rosenthal is great! I started with another doctor and we didn't work well together so I switched to Dr. Rosenthal and have not been disappointed. I had undiagnosed allergies and asthma. I live with cats and it was becoming a decent sized problem for me. I was tested and I now get allergy shots. I have almost no reactions to animals anymore, which is fantastic and I also no longer get seasonal allergies. I have to go get shots every 4 - 5 weeks now that I've built up but it makes my life SO much better. Both Michelle's are great at giving the shots and Sandy at the front desk is super helpful and nice. I was sent here by two friends and SUPER glad I took control of my breathing and allergy issues. read more

I had my first appointment with Dr. Rosenthal today and left very happy. I've been trying for two years to get a skin condition properly diagnosed and resolved, without luck. Dr. Rosenthal was incredibly patient and spent a great deal of time taking a comprehensive history of my issue, asking insightful questions and talking through past findings from other medical offices. He helped me understand test results from another medical practice that weren't thoroughly explained to me previously. I was very impressed with the time and thought he put into my visit. read more

I feel bad about writing this, because I was a patient of Dr. Rosenthal's and other doctors in their practice for years. Over the past few years, and especially now, it's my opinion that this practice is simply overwhelmed. They are nice people who are well-intentioned...but get used to LONG wait times just to get a shot and slow response in general. Wait times just to get a shot are VERY long. One (maybe two) nurses give shots. They've outgrown themselves -- it's a small office. My impression over the past two years is that the practice is loading up on new patients without the resources or capability to match the demand. For years, they were slow in hiring new nurses (and still are). Maybe the new company that took over will hire more nurses...but the shot area is SO small...only able to fit 2 patients at a time. They have one (sometimes two) nurses giving shots...but the nurses are also juggling other tasks while giving shots. Also, it's a little too bureaucratic in the shot process. One nurse had me look at each vile to verify my name was on each vile. When I looked and verified them...she wanted me to individually acknowledge each separate vile for my name...one at a time. So, "Yes, that's my name. That one two. That one three...that one four." After waiting 10-15 minutes just to get a shot with an empty office, I decided to leave and go find someone else to give me shots. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Richard Rosenthal's in Reston for a long time now. He is a great doctor and his staff are terrific as well. I recently saw Dr. Rosenthal and he prescribed a medication for me. I went to CVS and found out that the medication was very expensive and I could not afford to purchase. I called Dr. Rosenthal's office and I spoke to Minoo McFarland who was very understanding about my inability to purchase this drug. She was very patient and listened to me and told me that she would look into my problem and get back to me. To my surprise she did call me back and said that she found a substitute drug that was much less costly and provided me a script. I can't thank her and Dr. Rosenthal enough. Dr. Rosenthal is an absolutely phenomenal allergy specialist. I was recently told by my primary care doctor that I was to completely avoid most basic food groups. I was eating lettuce and chicken every single day for 3 weeks. When I finally got into Dr. Rosenthal (which wasn't even a horrible wait- I was just hungry!) I was ready to give up. I couldn't handle another doctor limiting yet again, my diet or offering additonal dietary restrictions. Needless to say that when within 5 minutes he reviewed my results and told me, politely, that the results were completely misinterpreted- I was ecstatic. To make a long story short, my mother and I both burst into tears, and my mom left the office running out of the office screaming "THIS IS THE BEST DOCTOR EVER!!!!!" To all the patients in the waiting room. Not only did he give me the opportunity to eat again, (I had lost 15lbs in 2 weeks) he LISTENED to me instead of trying to diagnose, charge and send me out the door. I could truly write a novel. Even if He hadn't been able to give me good news, I wouldn't have been necessarily devastated because of his diplomatic and caring nature. Renewed faith in modern practicing medical professionals. Before we left, he helped make a menu of all the "new foods" I could eat again. He was just as happy as we were. It was a beautiful experience. Faith in humanity restored. I could truly write a novel. His staff was equally as attentive and considerate. If you are looking for an allergist, your search has come to an end. I have been seeing Dr. Rosenthal for twelve years. I am probably one of his more "experienced" patients since I am allergic to five different bees and receive three shots every six weeks. Our relationship started when I went into anaphylactic shock from a bee sting. Three years later I was stung again and, because of the injections, nothing happened. I have also seen Dr. Rosenthal for other allergies as well as medical advice. I am extremely fortunate that I found him. He is incredibly knowledgeable and caring. My son in went in for his 2nd set of allergy tests. We had comprehensive results from the skin tests and a blood tests that Minoo McFarland ordered. 10 minutes after administering the 2nd set of allergy tests she provided a comprehensive explanation of the tests to me and my son. And told us about the pros and cons of possible allergy shot treatment. I feel that the bedside manner/communication within this office is superb. Both times we have not felt rushed and Minoo provided very detailed and comprehensive feedback. I am so impressed by this office! I too had valuable experiences with Dr Rosenthal. From the time I walked into his Reston office, I was well cared for and given a lot of personal attention. Because Dr Rosenthal is detail oriented, all data input about me, the precious patient, must be thorough and complete. He's an excellent listener even though he appears to be a little hard of hearing on one side and he's such an interesting man. I had been going to another allergist for many years and I simply was not getting better. Dr Rosenthal's nurse tested me and found no allergies. What? I returned for more in-depth testing and still - no allergies. Dr Rosenthal helped me make sense of it all. You have no idea how liberating that is. I've been battling an allergic reaction for 4 months and finally was referred to Dr. Rosenthal. They were right on time with my appointment. The nurse listened carefully to all of my symptoms and remedies I've tried. Dr. Rosenthal came in and did not try and diagnose me right away which I loved. Instead he came up with a three route plan to figure out my allergy. We've ruled out so many possible causes and are on to the final stages of figuring it out. I've been receiving treatments for seasonal allergies plus mold/dust for 45 years. During that time, the effectiveness of the treatments was marginal, barely worth the time and trouble to visit the office and receive the injections. Until I moved to Dr. Rosenthal. Being a patient of Dr. Richard R. Rosenthal has been a miracle in my life. I suffered from severe hay fever. When tested the ragweed was recorded as a plus 5 on a scale of 0 to plus 4. During hay fever season I itched in every orifice on my face, coughed continually and my nose needed blowing all the time. I also was plus 3 to the dust mite and had to take an antihistamine before dusting the house or I would get a bad headache. When I started with the practice I had allergies to tree pollen in the spring. Now the my hay fever season is normal, with just the use of antihistamines and I can dust without the use of medicine. I no longer need treatment for spring allergies. The practice has many days and hours to give shots and the personnel are warm and friendly. He has been my allergy doctor for 35 years. read more

I have been going to Dr Rosenthal's Reston (and Fairfax occasionally) Allergy office since 2007. He has given me excellent care over that time. This year (2018), I had the flu and I ended up in the ER in March. Dr Rosenthal took care of me afterwards. My lungs became inflamed due to asthma after the flu. I would like to report that today, 2 months post-flu, I get the most improved patient award! I'm doing great by all metrics. I can breathe, and I'm gardening and walking in nature again. He spends time talking to you, and takes time to understand your lifestyle and triggers. Because with allergies/asthma, it's never simple. It's about the view of the entire patient and their lifestyle. He will recommend not only medications, but also the best way to manage your life with allergies/asthma. I'm happy to report that I am on less medicine and I'm feeling fabulous! I highly recommend Dr. Rosenthal and his practice. If you have allergies/asthma and need a fantastic doctor in Northern Virginia (either Reston or Fairfax), this is where you should go. I would give him more than 5 stars if I could.
