This store is more neat, clean and upscale-ish, a la "Yorkville" (Toronto reference) and not like Adorit in the Byward Market (that also carries local and Canadian designs, and some of the same brands, like Miik) which is more, a la "Kensington Market" (sorry, another Toronto reference), but meaning more bohemian and smelling of patchouli. Prices are high, but your getting good quality and supporting the Canadian market.

The great thing about Flock Boutique is that the clothes are made by Canadian designers, the majority of which are women! They try to bring in lots of fashions from Ottawa and Montreal also, to be local. The accessories here are amazing! They have lots of colourful pins and earrings and some great bags! I really had to control myself, or I would have had an empty wallet when I came out. I did see several dress options, but was tight on time, so I couldn't try anything on. One of the girls working in the store patiently showed me several dresses and answered all my questions about the designers and the store. The people who work here clearly know what they are talking about. It is also great that so many of the designs are by Canadian women! For someone who wants to dress artistically, this is the perfect spot to shop.

Unlike Marianne's, they don't sell lingerie. Regular prices are not cheap (I'd say about $150+ for dresses, $50+ for tops, $75+ for pants/skirts). However, they often have 50%-80% off sales (and that's when you'll see me in the store, lol). Admittedly, many of their items are frumpy (at least in my opinion), but they have some cool pieces, you just have to look for them. Staff are friendly and nice and their change rooms are beautiful (looks a little like a boudoir). Joanne's is in the Westgate Shopping Centre. Lots of free parking.

The majority of clothing sold at this store is pretty much just wardrobe essentials; plain longsleeve tees, active zip ups, plain shirts, jackets, etc. This store is focused on the concept of "timeless basics" rather than chasing the current fashion trends. For some reason, I always thought this store was a lot cheaper than other stores but it turns out that unfortunately no, it is not. I bought a zip up for $50 and a plain longsleeve tee for $25. Not that it's expensive, just not a store that I would label as "cheap," but more "affordable." I love that this store is wide and spacious, and it didn't feel crowded even though the store was pretty busy. The coolest thing about this store, though? They have self-checkouts instead of a cashier, and not the normal self-checkouts you're used to, either. It's the kind where you place all your items into this bin, and then everything's instantly & automatically scanned. Then you pay and it prints out your receipt. Mind you, there was around 5 of these self-checkouts so there wasn't a line you had to wait in to pay for your items. Something to note: Uniqlo also has a Uniqlo app, where you have access to app-exclusive discounts and special items that aren't available in-store. I'd recommend downloading this app prior coming to the store, because the reception was weak when I tried to download it on-the spot. All in all, a great new clothing store to check out!

The Long Version: I had been to the Scottish and Irish Store out in Bells Corners but didn't know this one existed until I saw it while dropping off my husband at Funhaven to spend a few hours with a friend of his and the friend's kids. We got there early and the friend hadn't arrived yet, so that gave us the opportunity to poke around the store. There are 2 floors, with food being on the first floor and clothes, decor and other non-food items on the second floor. I was only interested in the food, lol, so didn't go up to the second floor. They had lots of snacks, my favourite type of food. Haha. They had chips/crisps, cookies/biscuits, candies, chocolates, etc. They also had lots of sodas and other drinks like juices. They had a clearance section where they marked down items that were nearing or past their best before dates. This is where I shopped since I found the regular prices a bit on the high side. I picked up some chips for my husband (Lamb and Rosemary flavoured ones and Cheese and Onion flavoured ones) and a bag of Monster Munch for us to share (Pickled Onions flavour). No bakery section with fresh baked goods, but they have frozen baked goods. Staff were pleasant. I chatted with the cashier and discovered they actually closed down their Bells Corners location. Good to know, lol. I feel this location on Baxter is more hidden, but hopefully they have established enough of a customer base that they'll be ok. Parking on the weekends (and I assume also when kids are not in school, like the summers, March Break, and PD Days) is epic since it's in the same complex as Funhaven. Wow - I read about Jimmy the Suit Guy on Reddit, and he's widely known as the best suit salesperson…read morein Ottawa. I had my first visit over the weekend! Some points of note: 1. You must call to make an appointment first - they don't take walk-ins. 2. There is limited selection. What they have is what they have. I think the place is overflow from suit manufacturers, so they get what hasn't sold in other places. 3. What they have is FANTASTIC value. I got 3 namebrand suits, 2 shirts, and 4 ties for $1000. And they all look fantastic. 4. They don't do alterations, but can recommend excellent tailors. 5. They know what a good suit should look like. Jimmy and his salespeople are absolutely phenomenal at showing you suits that would look good on your body. They also carry tuxedos, shirts, belts and a limited selection of shoes. There's not a huge selection of kids' suits - it's really a mens' shop. I would strongly you visit Jimmy if you're looking for new suits.

They carry a huge selection of Sympli pieces in lots of styles and colours (I personally am not a huge fan of this brand, but I do see the appeal of pieces that pack well (i.e. don't wrinkle and fold down to nearly nothing) and you can mix and match). Their clothing aesthetic I find very similar to Marianne's in Westgate and Shepherd's at Trainyards. So, yes, perhaps catering to let's just say women who would subscribe to magazines like More, or Zoomer. Their kitschy items are fun and cute. They have fridge magnets that say things like "a clean house is a sign of a wasted life," or "housecleaning never killed anyone, but why take the chance?" I hate household chores, so I can relate to these sentiments, haha. They have luggage tags shaped like fashionable shoes, by Fluff. I have listed it under women's fashion because the back half of the store is devoted to very glamourous and fabulous women's (not girl's) clothes. The front half is a collection of kitschy items targeted to women who are more "mature" and may or may not be divorced. There were fridge magnets, greeting cards, aprons and oven mitts sporting saucy and witty slogans. There were also novelty luggage tags, divorce guides and books offering advice for those over 40 and 50. They even had tables with high-heeled legs! It was a hoot to hang out there for a while, but it is definitely aimed at a specific demographic of which I am not really a member.
