Some soft and some hard wood. But mixed wood usually has the snap, crackle, and pop that usually you think of with a camp fire or in a lodge type fireplace. Hard wood such as oak and Eucalyptus it give out more heat than mix. Some hardwoods give more of a camp fire smell depending on the wood. I am purely into the aesthetic, smell and yes warmth too. Generally Mix will be fine if you are similar into the firewood like myself . Otherwise you need to pay more for the hardwood and unique variety of woods that are out there. Got my firewood yesterday from Rick. First time, and we are very happy. We paid $120 for a 1/4 chord of Eucalyptus. (A very generous 1/4 chord in my opinion) I didn't know a lot about Eucalyptus and had been hoping for oak. However, the Eucalyptus burned just as clean and for just as long as the oak I had from last year. I burned about 7 pieces between 4 pm and 10 pm in my fireplace last night. I opted to pick up instead of have Rick deliver because I wanted it for last night. He gave me an entire wheelbarrow of "kindling" for free because I came to pick it up. We have been purchasing firewood for the past 22 years, (actually use it for warmth, not just ambiance, so the mix of wood we get is important). We've dealt with many different firewood businesses over the years, and this was BY FAR the best experience we've had! We ordered a full cord, and definitely got our money's worth, and working with Rick was awesome, great customer service! I forgot to mention the dimensions of our fireplace when ordering, and when Rick came with the wood, we discovered some of the pieces were a little too big. He offered to come back with his chainsaw and cut all of the wood to size.
