Rick's Musical Instruments shop was so friendly, helpful,knowledgeable and accommodating. I drove 2.5 hours to get there and it was so well worth the trip. I got to try out the saxophones that I was interested in purchasing and they let me go play in a private studio, gave me and my daughter water and answered all of my questions. There was no pressure of selling and they took the time to really ask what I was looking for and helped me. I left there feeling very happy, excited and thankful for their kindness,patience and general hospitality. I purchased a Cannonball A5 25th Anniversary Big Bell Stone Series SE Alto Saxophone that I absolutely love and is absolutely as amazing playing as it is beautiful. This is my very first big professional musical instrument purchase ever and I'm very happy with my purchase. This shop came highly recommended and I went out there all on just a limb without ever being there. I was more then pleased. Rick,Sam and the rest of the staff are all amazing and exactly the kind of experience you could only hope to find in a very family oriented feeling kind of shop. Awful! Rick, the owner is rude. I was past due on my account and he automatically without authorization deducted my debit card which I used when I last made a payment to them. That's illegal. This is all while the country is pretty much shut down due to CoVID-19. I am out of work, my kids are out of school, businesses are closed and When I called to inquiry why this amount was taken without my authorization nor my permission he told me it was in the contract. my card nor bank info was never listed for him to deduct this payment automatically. On the contract. I also never received a Final Bill as it states I should have. I called hoping to set up a payment plan but the owner Rick, went at me full force..... he told me, I was on unemployment and I should be able to pay. He told me I was going to receive stimulus money, I am not receiving stimulus money. He told me, I should pay for my daughters livelihood. Unbelievable. A. I am not on unemployment. I do not qualify. B. I am not receiving stimulus money and C. My daughters livelihood is just fine Rick! Please do not rent from this company. Don't by their instruments. If your schools music department offers to use them, don't go through them! They told me they are going to reverse this debit, and I agreed to pay the past due. Waiting for it to go back into my account and then I will update my review. I have not received the reversal as of yet. I dropped off my guitar there to get a nut fixed during the school year. Covid happened and lockdown ensued, I came 4 months later and Rick told me "that guitar is either sold, or donated", I told him "so you sold the guitar I dropped off for you to fix because you didnt hear back from me after 1 voicemail". I had to call the police to resolve the issue where unfortunately the officer told me that Rick had a small hidden sign behind the register that says "if you leave an instrument here after X says it becomes the property of Ricks Music". The officer told me that he told him to move the sign into a visible location and agreed that Rick was a slimy greasy guy just trying to get some money. Son took the sax in school.. He went back into general music so i called to cancel sax because it's expensive (not paying if he's not playing).. All fine.. I was looking to buy a saxaphone for my daughter. She has been taking lessons for 3 years now and since she seems to be sticking with it, we decided she should have her own. I heard that Rick's was having a black Friday sale on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The entire store was marked at 50% off. It was well worth the trip to Cumberland for the savings. Not only were the prices right, but the staff and the owner were friendly and incredibly helpful. I have zero music knowledge, but felt very comfortable making this purchas with the staff walking us through the options. This purchase was one of the "feel good" buys for the year. A $20 a month rental fee, which for a school year should be $200 at most, is now $897.12 for the contract, why would I agree to pay another $717.12 to rent an instrument!? Just had an instrument repaired by Rick's. (I should have trusted my instincts and brought it to Noll Guitar in Cranston like I normally do.) It was returned to me in horrible condition with numerous scratches and dings in the finish that were not there previously. Granted, they had to remove the bridge; however, I know what the instrument (and it's finish) looked like before I had it repaired. Not professional at all. Who ever is doing the string instrument repairs is definitely not a luthier; and quite frankly not a very good repair person. I would have been better off bringing it to a high school wood working class. In talking to my colleagues, a number of them have had similar experiences with their own instruments. I should have talked to them first. In my honest opinion, save your money and run (don't walk) away from Rick's Musical Instruments. read more

My son brought his French Horn in for service and when he went to pick it up he noticed it had been damaged. There is a large dent and a scratch in his horn. I am waiting for a call from Rick the owner. read more

READ YOUR CONTRACT BEFORE SIGNING. Somehow in the last 4 years of having this instrument, my rent to own contract got turned to a simple rental program without my knowledge, then before I knew it I got a call from the local sheriff saying I had a warrant out for me because of a $200 balance. Then with all the fees and everything, I owe over $700. I asked for information on payments I have already made, the original full price of the instrument etcetera and they couldn't give me any answers. All I got was a "deer in the headlights" look and a disingenuous smile. I guess they don't care much for building relations with their lower income customers. read more

I had a great experience there today. The associate was very friendly and helpful. I brought my trombone in with a broken spit valve and they fixed it in about 5 minutes and only charged me $5. I enjoyed browsing there impressive selection of sheet music and playing around with a few display instruments. I'll definitely be going back soon. read more

I have always had very professional and courteous service at Rick's when renting, purchasing, trying out instruments or getting repairs. Today I brought in one of my favorite Haynes Flute headjoints that had a ding in it. Rick took it, disappeared for like 3 minutes then handed it back to me. I couldn't see any trace of where the ding was, totally gone! Upon my asking he gladly showed me the workshop and the tools involved in repairing the headjoint. He refused any payment for the repair and simply wished to see me soon. read more

Unique, inviting, friendly. Just a nice store to visit. The staff, especially Matt, are friendly, helpful and provides great customer service. Not only did Matt make recommendations, he was really knowledgeable about the instruments (bass guitars and amps) as well. We promise you will at least think about buying something there because of the products and service, including discounts currently offered. Not too mention, the atmosphere and customer service is refreshing as opposed to what you encounter at GC. i would not recommend ricks music store in cumberland. the folks who teach private lessons are extremely rude and do not work well with students, and the staff that was there was extremely unhelpful and very rude. they guy was just nasty and so was their ONLY drum teacher. this was my 1st and last time ever in this store. i will go to the music complex as they are way more flexible, knowledgeable and all around super nice and helpful. ricks you have FOREVER LOST MY BUSINESS, AND I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND YOU OR YOUR TEACHERS TO ANYONE! read more

This people just bought a music school in Rehoboth MA. That school was very nice! Now, it all change.... My experience: In september I took only the last week class, 1 class, and wanted to pay just for that class, the lady in the front desk charge me for the whole month of September, and told me she will take care of the balance and let me know what to do after. Pretty much I pay for that class and 3 more for October. When I get to the school, for my third class in October, which I already paid for, they gave this letter saying I can't take anymore classes before I pay. I ask the girl in the front door, and no even one "sorry', "let me fix this for you"... instead it was an argument, speaking over me, etc (very rude employees here! - No clue about costumer service). So I said I dont want more classes here, and ask for a refund for the class I already pay for... now they do not want to give my money back!!! How is that? A costumer pay in advance, then you tell the costumer he can't have more class unless he pay (pay for the class he already paid), costumer ask for a refund, now you say there is no refund... I didn't understand the negative reviews before, but now I've changed my mind. The people at Rick's tried to rip me off the likes I've never experienced before and hope no one ever has to hereafter. I ordered a box set of high end cymbals and when they arrived I immediately noticed something wasn't right, the factory seal on the box was broken, cymbals were removed, and they had used a magic marker to cross out the printed description of the contents of the set. When I asked why was it tampered with and a cymbal missing they tried to turn it around onto me and say it was what I ordered. I was furious and got my money back. The owner Rick stepped in and was getting agitated that I was calling these frauds out on what they were trying to get away with, which was to keep the extra cymbal I was entitled to in the complete set, sell it on it's own for 100% profit at my expense. I told other musical instrument business owners about this corrupt, fraudulent place and they were in shock, perplexed, and disgusted as was I about this whole fiasco. A warning to anyone reading this, do not order any big items from these guys, they've lost my business forever. read more

I had to write this review as I'm surprised about all the negative ones. If I could do a half star, my rating is 4.5 as I have never had a bad experience and have been using Rick's to repair my baritone saxophone and purchase parts & accessories for years now. Jamie is my favorite employee, has a great personality, and is extremely knowledgeable about woodwinds, especially saxophones (he's a pro musician and repair dude). He'll even give you tips about cleaning your instrument and oiling to cut down on unnecessary trips for repair. If you have a question and that person isn't an expert, they'll hook you up and get your question answered. This store is well organized and sells and rents instruments from rock band to symphony and everything in between, including a huge assortment of sheet and book music, including instructional books at rear of the store. Took off half star: I can't critique the music lessons, as I've not taken any here (but the practice rooms need more insulation!). Another only slightly negative factor: Store is on the back right of another building: To access front door you have to climb stairs (or ramp) and walk a ways to get there. Final thought: if you need something they don't have, they'll get it for you. (No, I'm not getting paid and I'm not related to anybody here). ;-) read more

Rick's Music, once again, pulls through in a pinch. My daughter is a bassoonist and her instrument needed repair immediately due to a big concert with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. There isn't a replacement bassoon to be found nor is there a qualified person to work on a bassoon in the state of Rhode Island except for one person. Yes, Rick from Rick's music. It was a Saturday, the day after a holiday when I called Rick's. I was in a bit of a panic and the gentleman on the phone calmed me down and expressed the urgency to Rick. Rick generously gave up his time and allowed us to come in. All of the staff at Rick's truly do support the art and the kids that participate in it. If it wasn't for this establishment my daughter would not have been able to perform on Sunday. I can't thank you enough.
