While visiting in the area I found out about Rick's Records through word of mouth. Already going in I knew a couple of things: 1) quirky record shopping spot but worth a visit, 2) space is tight in the shop, and 3) categorization is hit and miss but there is plenty to browse through no matter which way you make your way through within the shop. There are all sorts of music and music-related items sold here that goes beyond vinyl but vinyl is what Rick has the most of. I saw cassettes, VHS, CD's, apparel, books, posters, vintage toys or memorabilia, and even laser picture discs here too. As you walk around you will see old and vintage posters and promotions pinned up that make the visit even more interesting. I found some good gems and like everyone else has explained in their reviews you will have a good 2-5 minute way to get a true price for your finds. Rick and his partner will inform you on the price after, what it seems, they make their evaluation on the records and might have to reference/look up pricing. The pricing was no doubt on the higher side of what you would find on Discog's for your pull of records but for me that was okay. I knew the records I stumbled upon could be rare (without checking on Discogs myself during my visit). I found a 1976 version of Patti Smith Horses that was in pretty decent condition for under $30 which is a fair price. Next time I am in the area I will definitely be back and make it a point to look for records within the 1950's - 90's era. read more

Love record stores BUTT - Went on Rick's tour of the place and yes, he's got an abundance of records which makes for a fun hunt but I honestly don't think I'll be back. It's too much of a hassle. The check out process is PAINFUL - just about as fun as a root canal. You can't just pay and go. Here's how it works: There's a line with a person in a box with a cut out window hole. You drop your records off at the box with a hole and the person looks up prices on Discogs.com. About an hour later, they give you the prices for your intended purchase but I'm not exactly sure which price they're retrieving from Discogs. I surfed the shop's inventory for a couple of hours and found some gems (all unpriced) but ended up leaving empty handed - total effort buster. I'm in Shreveport about once a month. Maybe I'll try again ... there's not much to do in Shreveport. read more

I have been frequenting this business ever since I moved to this area five years ago. Rick and his staff are so knowledgeable about music, movies, etc. The inventory is amazing! The people that come in the store are so diverse, and Rick can accommodate them all with what he knows! Amazingly large selection from almost every genre and I found a ton of stuff I wanted. My issue was the pricing.... first off there are no price on the records. You have to gather up what you want and then the owner heads to the backroom I guess to check prices on discogs which I guess is fine but the asking price on most the things I was interested in were ridiculously overpriced. Yea he's got 30 copies of Electric Ladyland - but grabbing one with split seems on the sleeve and some visible issues on the record will still end up as a $25 record. Beat up copy of Aladdin Sane with visible coffee stains all over the cover is not "good" condition and definitely not a $25 record. So yea - amazing selection and the owner is very knowledgeable and helpful. I would go back again but do your research on the value of what you're buying or you could walk away paying twice what you could elsewhere. read more

Read the other reviews here to get a sense of the peculiarities of this record store. I'll focus on the main quirk of this store: ad hoc pricing of records using eBay and Discogs sales histories. I've been there twice. The first time the owner mistook two records for vastly more valuable rarities. This was due to errors in using Discogs. I questioned those assessments and got kicked out of the store. The second time I visited I ended up buying one of those records when this time I presented it stating exactly what it was, which he then properly verified, coming back with a totally fair and appropriate price. Rick knows his stock and where the odd items are. I asked if he had some slightly obscure records, and sure enough he did, pointed them out, I pulled them and he priced them, fairly and accurately. However, shopping there is a bit of a search for the needle in the haystack, and sometimes you find the needle by getting pricked. Still, I'll be back because Rick gets some interesting rarities, and I know how to search haystacks and am not afraid of occasionally getting pricked. read more

To begin, the location leaves A LOT to be desired. Rick's moved 4 months ago, and to say they've made little headway on organizing is an understatement. I'm by no means a high maintenance person, but the building is so sketchy that they literally had to put a sign on the front door reading "This is the front door, I assure you." You walk into an actual garbage pile, wind around 2 corners, and stumble into a room so stuffed with records (and garbage) that you have to cautiously navigate little pathways to get through it. Beyond, you'll find another room filled with VHS tapes (why?) and another with thousands of records that are somewhat organized in tall wooden racks. This room is far easier to sift through, though the racks are divided into two sections- top and bottom- and it's nearly impossible to access anything on the bottom. The organizational system is weird at best- rock (including all of the The Chipmunk's albums/?), rap, soul R&B, new wave, and a section that includes a sampling of the "1,001 albums you need to listen to before you die" list. In theory- the system works, but in practice- things are all over the place. In a 2 hour time span, I found 4 Tom Petty sections. Rick's actually has a lot of great music if you have time to spend searching- which I personally enjoy quite a bit. The problem (beyond the hoarding) is the pricing. I found a copy of The Flaming Lips- Heady Fwends- missing the outer jacket, the poster, and the CD that came with the original packaging. When I asked for the price, Rick went to research on his computer and quoted me $5 over what the album is selling for brand new with all of the bells and whistles. He wanted $15 for a copy of CCR's Gold (no inner sleeve) that maxes out at less than $10 on Discogs. He quoted $30 for a busted copy of Sgt. Pepper's and asked $30 for a semi decent copy of Joshua Tree that averages $18.99 on Discogs. He quite literally has 100 copies of every Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac (or any top classic rock band from the last 50 years) album ever released. This is no surprise, as it seems that the pricing is based on his personal attachment to the music. I get it, I love Quadrophenia too, but I'll stay at home and spend 5 minutes buying a pristine copy online for half the price next time. Save yourself the headache, and skip this place. TL;DR Rick's is a great place if you need to know where you can find 75 copies of The Wall for $50 a piece. read more

Lots of great options both newer records and old. Went looking for punk records and found some but ended up being too late for incubus or tool. Kinda odd entrance, you have to weave through all the stuff and slightly cramped but wow what a selection! Even had 2009 era No Doubt records and old school Sex Pistols. 5/2/17. Updated review for new location on Youree Drive. Walking into this new location is scary. And I mean that using the most traditional sense of the word. Yucky, being another word that overtakes the senses upon entering, also in the most traditional sense. Walking in you will be overcome with deja vu, and also a familiar feeling of dread. You'll instantaneously, and simultaneously feel as though you have stumbled into your very own, real-life Silence of the Lambs, or a live episode of the most extreme Hoarders that you've ever seen. This place is dimly lit, and though underground you are not, you most certainly will feel that you are. Must fills your nostrils. It takes command. There are narrow paths for you to navigate. These paths barely divide the product, and this could be anything, from cds, dvds, vhs videocassettes, audiocassettes, action figures, used t-shirts, and of course, records. You don't know where you're going. You don't know where it all leads, or if there's even an end to it all. There may be no sight of a store employee. That doesn't mean there isn't one there somewhere amongst the pile of debris and clutter. It brings to mind how this is even a functioning business or business at all. I really wouldn't recommend young people enter here. The windows are even blocked out. It's strange, if not offsetting in the least. Now, this might be a cool place, if it were like, your recently departed hippie second cousin's old abode, the one who felt Belize just a bit too much that last go-round and never came back. And you could just sit there and sift through all his old trinkets, belongings, personal effects, and such for endless hours. But this is a place of business and my, my, my what a white-hot supernova of a hot mess this place is! And then to add to the misery of the whole shopping-sheer survival experience, this merch ain' cheap folks!! When a store clerk did finally appear from the rubble to assist me, I inquired about a used, sweat-stained, over 3 decades old concert t-shirt, way too small for me. The clerk then disappeared yet again among the piles, only to re-appear some minutes later and inform me that he looked online, and a similar shirt was being sold for $40! Forty bucks. From a place where American Pickers would have great difficulty trying to tunnel into, in order to breach. Find your way out of here. And save your money! read more

I love the place, personally. The prices have always seemed fair to me, personally. I've gotten several not-so-common records there on multiple occasions for what I would consider not a lot of money. I think people get upset because they think getting into vinyl should be a cheaper affair than what it is, but that's just reality. This stuff is worth more than you might imagine. Rick has always seemed friendly to me, and yeah, the place is a little bewildering if it's your first time there, but there are nearly 100,000 records in the place. He's more than happy to give you a rundown of how everything is laid out. If you're into vinyl at all and you're in the area, it's a great place to check out. read more

Interesting place. When you first walk in, the place is a wreck. You wind around a couple of hallways and then it opens up......barely. It's a uniques setup if you're looking for used vinyl. Rick has a section of "1001 best albums". And it's not sorted by artist, but by the release date. Interesting to say the least. I loved this section, but you have to thumb through everything. There is a lot of cleanup to do in this store. They have more albums than they know what to do with. There were 10 Beatles - Abbey Road and 5 Pink Floyd - The Wall, just to give you an idea. I've never seen so many albums from the classic rock bands. Aside from the mess, the selection is very good in all genres. The biggest drawback is the pricing. Most albums don't have prices on them. Instead, they look up the record online to give you a price. I probably would have purchased a lot more, if there was a price on the album already, but I had to ask on every one. It was frustrating. I also found their prices to be about double of what other shops sell the same thing. It's definitely worth a look. I will probably come back the next time I'm in Shreveport. read more

I love the nostalgia of record stores and finding records from the 60's into today. BUT I am also a structure and order fanatic. I walked in and didn't know if I was in the right place but as soon as I turned the corner, there were records literally everywhere. Rick is so super nice and he took me on a tour to give me a break down. The problem is since nothing is labeled, you need a pen and paper or to record what he just said. The no labeling thing is atrocious and I hate to keep asking where did you say this was and that was. Additionally, I love old blues music, some of the Bobby Rush records that I would love to have bought had GAY in black sharpie on his face written on the album cover. Also, there are no prices on anything so he has to look up the record price on a website, then look at the condition of the record and give you a price. One of them he said well, it's not that good so I'll give it to you for free. The thing about that is 2 fold, if it's not in good condition, why is it on the floor to be purchased. But I appreciate the honesty. He is so nice and it's cool to have so many records but I honestly don't think I'll ever go back simply because it's so unorganized and I want to know a price in real time, I don't want to literally hunt for a record and then get to the computer and you give me a price that isn't reasonable. If you want to spare a few hours looking or call ahead if you're looking for something specific and Rick is your guy. If you're in it for the experience, this probably isn't the place for you. But I encourage you to go and just see what it's like. read more

Just tried to buy a record here. Asked the price (he goes by Discogs) and he wanted to charge the Discogs price PLUS shipping. When I asked why he was charging the shipping price when I was standing right there, he rudely said "YOU CAN LEAVE!" My advice is don't bother with this time-waster. read more

I've been to a couple of record stores in Shreveport/Bossier area recently, since my aunt bought me a record player for Christmas and this was by far the best one! When you first get there Rick greets you and then offers to take you on tour on how all the records are organized and where each genre is to be found (it only takes about 3 minutes). There's such A huge record selection there its, kind of overwhelming to look at them all in just one visit, so I'd recommend A couple of visits just so you could see the full array of records he has in the store. Theres section in the store called 1001 best records, it has alot of big hit albums, and there multiple copies of each one so that makes it easy to find A good pressing in good condition with little to no scratches if there are any at all. The customer service there is excellent, rick he'll help you find what ever you need, he knows just where everything at. I'd give it more than 5 stars if I could! read more

On a recent trip back to Shreveport to visit family I took my young teenage daughter in search of Beatles and Queen CDs. She had been buying CDs at a big box store at big box store prices. When you first walk into the store there is a sign that says something like this is only 1/10 of the store, turn the corner. Boy was that correct! My first instinct was to run but as we meandered around the store, I started to really like the place. Yes, it's musty but what do you expect when you have album covers that are 30 or 40 years old stocked away. To cut to the chase we asked, who I assumed was Rick, for the Beatles section. He knew right away where it was. I noticed there was no price which made me think I may have to negotiate. Ugh, I'm not a negotiator. After carefully selecting one CD we got a price. It was like $5. After spending a small fortune at the big box stores my daughter was thrilled at the price (she was using her own money). She proceeded to pick out more CDs and a T-Shirt. She spent about $16 on 3 CDs and a T-shirt. She was beyond thrilled. We checked out the entire store. Seeing my daughter's reaction to everything she saw was priceless. She asked about what 8 track cassettes were and how to you play 45s. This store is an experience, not a grab and go store. They do take credit cards. When I asked if they took credit cards, I assume again it was Rick, quipped, "and we give them back". Smart-A but that's what I like. The store is a must for any music lover. read more

I stopped by Rick's passing through Shreveport and ended up walking out with a stack of cool LPs. The shop is packed full of LPs, CDs, tapes, 8 tracks, movies, shirts, comics, all sorts of stuff. It's really full and a bit cluttered but generally well organized, with sections alphabetized by genre. Mosly used stuff, but there are some new ones in there. Rick was fair on the pricing too.
