I don't know how this place has 4 stars! We dropped in there and it was empty. There was a guy working there that was wasted. He could barely talk. I ordered chicken tacos and what came out was cold unseasoned chicken on white rice in a tortilla. I have had a lot of Mexican food in my life and I have never seen a chicken taco with white jasmine rice. My wife ordered a cheese quesadilla, couldn't eat it. Might be a great place for the locals but if you're looking for a decent meal, drive past this one. read more

Went there with a couple friends. Bar was empty but that made it even better. Sat on the patio soaking up the sun while looking out at the ocean. The bartender let us Bluetooth our own playlist while she served us cold ones. Great dive bar! read more

They told us all about him so when I walked in I yelled Ricky like I knew him. Pinche chonies & bras hanging everywhere, us currency hanging on the walls with names, knick knacks galore. I fricken loved it! Had my brother climb the stripper pole, he made it to the top on his 2nd time. He said it's a ball crusher. Ricky is a fierce AF host! He brought us snacks, cheered us, danced with us, told us great stories. I felt I was at my Tio's house. He does have a home up the hill but he's here even if there is one person. He will not close the bar until the last person leaves even if it's 5am He does have a little room upstairs he can sleep in, if need be. Let's start with the obvious: this is a dive bar in Mexico. With that mindset, I share with confidence that Ricky's Place is iconic. With trips down a few times a year, Ricky's is the first stop along the way every time. Dollar bills decorate the walls with loving messages from all over the world to dear Ricky. Loud music, stripper pole, colorful decor in every corner. Out back, the view from the patio faces to the North with a clear and unobstructed line to the ocean. That alone is enough to bring a sense of peace. Inside, the experience is different. Ricky is a social butterfly, doing shots with patrons and dancing with anyone that is standing near the dance floor. At 70 years old, Ricky has more youthful energy than the groups of college students that frequent is place. His English is pretty good and he shares stories, laughs lot, and is extremely attentive to his guests. He really takes pride in his establishment, which makes this review so easy to write. Bottom line is that you should stop for a beer on your next trip to Baja Mar, or where ever you're golfing this weekend. Last thing: When I personally read reviews, I always look for the mention of the bathroom. So... restroom is decent. Better than most in MX. read more

Ricky's bar seems like a Mexican bar from the 1980's with relatively impressive sound system. It is very quirky and seems weird at times. There are Halloween decorations and a X-mas Tree, random signed dollar bills, ladies underwear and bras on the walls. We know some who have contributed over the years. Then comes Ricky, a man with a full Afro and a cowboy hat. He has a distinctive laugh that makes everyone crack up. It sounds like the ill-advised cross breeding of a donkey and a hyena. When you meet Ricky, you immediately think he must be a cartoon character that you saw one time. Ricky can go up and down the pole all night long! The crowd continuously cheers him on! I am not sure why I waited so long for this review !! This is hands down one of the best small joints in rosarito . Came here for my bday oct 2018 and Ricky really made my bday a memorable one!!! Drinks are strong and they even have karaoke. Nice friendly staff besides Ricky as well !!! Plan to return oct 2019 !!! Ricky's place is the best dive bar in Northern Baja California. Cheap beer, plenty of tequila and a great time. Look for the store front sign of Ricky with a thumbs-up between Rosarito and Puerto Nuevo and you've arrived. Upon entering the bar it's dark, the ceiling and the walls are filled with dollar bills signed by passersby. You can't miss the stripper pole set up near the bar - give it a swing. The outside patio with an ocean view was perfect to enjoy endless buckets of cerveza mexicana on a sunny afternoon. But, the real gem is Ricky himself. He's the owner and works the bar everyday. Our cab pulled up to Ricky's on a dark and rainy Thursday night, a recommendation from the family who owns Charley's Place. Ricky's a good guy they said. No cars in the parking lot, the place was locked. A few raps on the rusted and weathered door woke a sleeping legend- Ricky himself. The place was empty except for a few thousand dollars taped to the wall (Ricky's retirement plan) and polaroids of naked women haphazardly taped between the dollars. Some dating back to the early 80's when bush was in its prime and heavy metal hair was running rampant. Ricky was more than hospitable, even letting us use the woman's restroom because the men's, he said, was just too far to walk to. Ricky drank with us and we had a few laughs. He spoke of his prime days in the early 90's when the place was jumping and women practically threw themselves at him. He even provided a few on-the-house shots for us weary and rain soaked travelers. We all love Ricky. That incredible smile and those muff shots of your mom on the wall were more than worth the stop in. Thanks for the good times buddy. We'll see you again soon. read more

Fu#king Ricky. I walked into this Mexico dive while the sun was still in full stride but you'd never know it when you are within Ricky's four walls - dark, real dark. There wasn't a customer in sight but there was a lingering gringo. An older lady who seemed surprised by our entrance because Ricky was making his moves and she was buying it hook, line and sinker. Sorry for breaking up the party, Ricky, but I think that you (and this bar that doubles as your house) have seen your fair share of women in your day. This is when the lights should have come on and the bar should have jumpstarted into business mode, but that never happened. Older gringo lady scurried out the door, Ricky laughed, he played some music and poured us drinks. The view from the patio is odd. I mean, you're on the ocean but not really on the ocean. You get a real good look at the vacant lot next door and Ricky serves as the constant entertainment. Kind of like an acoustic guitar player on the patio of the hippest cliffside happy hour joint, but sans instrument and you ain't sipping on a $14.00 martini. Oh Ricky... has this guy ever had a bad day? Seeing that he's been running the bar for roughly 25 years and he still has that s#it-eating grin on his face and that infectious laugh, I think not. Another reviewer commented that "there was a faint odor of vomit in the air." Yeah, so? That's what you should expect in a Mexican dive bar and that's what you're going to get. It's true! Well, Yelp directions led us on a wild goose chase. We asked a taxi driver, Oxxo workers, and even some local guy welding in his front yard... none of them had heard of Ricky's. But then we followed the directions on Ricky's FaceBook page! This is located on the free road, just south of Hotel Calafia. This is not a place like Papas & Beer (which is for Americans wanting to dance and hookup). This is where you go to drink and make friends. I will be going back soon. read more

Even more exceiting than that is when he showed up at my 1999 New Years party. You see I was one of his neighbors. My house sat on the point just south of his place. The epitome of Baja dive bars! Ricky's is a must stop destination if you are traveling down the Baja coast. My girlfriend loves his strawberry margaritas. The place is frequented by local ex-pats, surfers, locals, Tijuana locals looking to get out of the hustle and bustle of town, and always a wide variety of characters. Don't be surprised if you see random people trying their hand at the stripper pole in the middle of the room. Leave your bra stapled to the ceiling and a dollar with your name on it on the wall.
