    Rico Libre is what the city centre has needed for some time, an authentic and great tasting independant tapas restaurant. Unlike your chains, you get great quality food at a bargain price and that warm feeling inside that you're supporting the local community. The restaurant itself is in a former greasy spoon, and is a welcome change. It's located down a backstreet of Digbeth, which can be a little worrying at night but fear not, it's easy to get to and you can always grab a cab to it for a couple of quid from the main city centre zone. I ordered scallops with a mango and coriander salsa, Grilled Quail in a green mojo sauce, patatas bravas and grilled halloumi. They were all delicious. The restaurant managed to cope wonderfully with a table of around 20 people and the food came out in nice stages which meant I was able to tuck into each dish or a mixture of them at different times. It's currently a BYOB so I brought along a bottle of prosecco to help the food go down nicely ;) I'm hoping it stays like this, however not a huge issue if not. Total for a night of food, drink and chatter? £14. I paid £16 as a courtesy for the free bread and service. I thoroughly recommend this place and would definately go back. Would be great to see it again when they've settled in and had a chance to properly transform the place. Be warned, no card machine...so stop by the coach station for free cash withdrawal should you need to (I ended up sprinting down the street to go get some money!)

    This is a fab place!!! So excited it's only around the corner from me (Soz that gets the 5th star!) I went for my friends birthday...its bring you're own booze which actually works really well with the relaxed ambiance of the restaurant and tapas style of eating. The waitresses were all really friendly and helpful and the food was amazing!!! We literally asked for 1 of everything which was more than enough for the four of us. The scallops were fresh and cooked perfectly! The garlic sauce for the muscles was incredible and the warm fresh bread kept coming so we could finish up all the yummy sources! I'm looking forward to going back already.

    Nestled away in Digbeth not to far from the custard factory is this wonderful little tapas joint. A bunch of us descended on Rico Libre on Friday night as a bit of a yelp night out and even though we took up over half the restaurant (which seats only 35) the staff were absolutely fantastic in every respect. This little hidden gem is one of only two places I can think of in the city centre that's BYOB, and for me that's definitely something we're missing out on. When you can drink cheaply or extravagantly whilst still enjoying the same quality of food is a massive plus, and it makes sorting out the bill so much easier! Anyhoo, onto the main part - the food... Rico Libre offer a great range of tapas dishes at only £10 for 3 - which is an absolute bargain. I decided on the quail (which turned out to be a whole spatchcocked quail cooked to absolute perfection), the rabbit (practically a whole rabbit slow cooked in a beautiful tomato sauce until it just fell off the bones) and the calimari which was deliciously tender with a very light batter that wasn't too greasy. I was expecting small portions in all honesty, it's tapas. I how wrong I was! I couldn't even consider dessert after all that lot. As I said, this is definitely a hidden gem sparkling in the midst of warehouses and factory buildings. If it's not on your list of places to visit it really should be!

    Rico Libre is a fantastic little spot down in the side streets of Digbeth, Vicki had made an en-mass booking for around 20 of us to descend the one evening. If you didn't know Rico Libre was where it was you could either walk past or just never even venture down to its front door slightly off from the common through flow of pedestrian traffic. We pretty much all decided the way forward was the option of 3 tapas for £10 each - over 60 dishes ordered and all served to the correct people and very quickly, no real wait time. With the dishes these can very slightly in size, the mini fish and chips and quail dishes being the biggies! As we had had some of the smaller dishes we just about felt there was room for desert and again I would heartily recommend it. With Rico Libre one of the main draws is the bring your own they offer, through this we enjoyed a fantastic tapas and desert for 2 with a great bottle of red for £30 all in, in most places you'd pay the best part of that just for the wine. I would say get in here while it's still off the radar or it could be difficult to get a seat!

    I quite like tapas. I presume in Spain that it's served all evening and rather than being a main course it's a mini dish of something. I'd looked at the menu for Rico Libre more than two days before going. And because I'd not finished blogging for my day job I'd thought I probably wouldn't attend. I'm really pleased I did. Yelp Birmingham Community Manager Victoria O had organised our group to try 3 Tapas for £10 with a "bring your own drink" policy. When you are a group of 18 people turning up on a Friday night this is likely to be a 3 hour experience. I scoffed my yummy Patas Bravas before taking a photo of them. Then my meatballs were eaten just as quickly. Other people's first and 2nd items came out which meant I got to chatter a bit. And then my third plate appeared pollo something. To be fair I'll eat chicken with pretty much anything. Great little eatary well worth popping to try out. I'm sure its much quieter when it's not filled with us loud yelpers. Give it a try if you get chance.

    Rico Libre has to be one of my favourite restaurants in Birmingham. It's the most unlikely place to find fantastic food, but this is all part of its charm. Down a side street in Digbeth, it can feel like you're walking towards a deserted industrial estate in the dark rather than a popular restaurant, and once inside, the surreal nature of the restaurant continues, with band posters on the ceilings, a random old sofa and some weird looking ornaments dotted around. The tapas dishes themselves though have always been spot on with every visit. The menu has a lot of choice, with seperate sections for meat, fish, and vegetarian. Even what are usually basic tapas dishes, such as patatas bravas, seem to taste 10x better here, and the fish, such as the garlic prawns, always taste really fresh. We've had great luck with the specials too, which are served on slightly larger plates. The soft shell crab really stood out as perfect on our last visit. I can also recommend the garlic flatbread as a starter - they aren't lying when they say there is mucho garlic, which is no bad thing in my book. Rico Libre doesn't have a license, which means you don't end up with a hefty bill of drinks at the end. They do request however that you spend £17pp, to make it worth their while. This is easily done as most tapas dishes are around a £5, a little bit more for specials. Rico Libre is one of those places that you want to take everyone you know just to see their surprise at the place and the quality of the food.

    Birmingham is not short of Tapas restaurants, in my opinion Rico Libre is one of the best. There is a standard menu, plus weekly specials on the board as you walk in together forming a concise yet well rounded menu. THe restaurant itself used to be a cafe and the interior hasn't changed much, you almost get the feeling you are eating in someone's front room which I love. I have never had a dud dish here, everything is always perfectly seasoned and balanced. As if Rico Libre couldn't get any better it's also really affordable (3 dishes on the standard menu are £14) and bring your own booze. Book before visiting though as it's always full!

    AMAZING. I have visited before and was not disappointed when I returned. The tapas was some of the best I've had with the duck, ribs and prawns as the stand out dishes for me. It's only a small place, but the staff were accommodating and friendly. Can't wait to re visit. Viva espania

    I visited the restaurant for the first time on Friday for a Yelp get together that Vicky O. had arranged. - Such a lovely evening ! and a great idea! The restaurant itself can be approached by walking down Digbeth high street and turning left onto Milk Street, before the Custard Factory and then you can't fail to miss it, as it's like an oasis - there is nothing else around apart from industrial units and the Backpackers place. It's a bright green colour and really cheery. Infact, the staff too are really friendly and happy and easily approachable. The décor inside is very simplistic, but that's not a problem. The atmosphere and great company made up for that. The menu too was fairly simple, but that's fine, some times there are too many things on a menu and this place prefers to concentrate on simple ingredients and quality. 3 tapas for £10 - and they are a good portion size too. I chose meatballs, Halloumi with peppers and chicken and chorizo. I also had a Crème Brule for dessert - all delicious! It's bring your own bottle too, so this helps keep the cost down. The staff were so accommodating to our changing group numbers and I think we all felt at ease. I would definitely recommend it and hope to go back again soon.

Having had a good experience at TR at Meadowhall in Sheffield, I was eager to try out their branch located in Birmingham's Grand Central (close to Nando's), especially after receiving a 50% off food coupon which they send when you sign up to their loyalty scheme, which is probably the strangest loyalty scheme ever as after signing up once you only receive further discounts if you're a student with an ac email address, and even then you can only claim on Monday's! I ordered three tapas - Paella with Chicken - Tortilla (Spanish Omelette) with aioli - Chorizo with potatoes and a fried egg. Sadly my favourite two tapa dishes normally, the Albiognas and Potatoes Bravas both weren't gluten-free, the latter was down to a shared fryer. I mean come on Omar, why can't you have a dedicated gluten-free fryer at your restaurants when you could be making what is a limited selection for coeliacs, much better. At full price, I wouldn't say it represents value for money but they do seem to do lunch offers which make it a little more reasonable but the gluten-free selection as a whole just seems limited. Most of my food was good, the main flaw was the potato, chorizo and egg dish was a little overcooked and there wasn't much chorizo at all meaning it wasn't as enjoyable as I'd have liked; my friend also ordered this and she got some shell in her food which is careless. I did really enjoy my tortilla which is probably the best Spanish tortilla I've had, which is a Spanish omelette with potato and onion, I liked how they also put some aioli on the side to give it a bit of a kick and to avoid dryness. My paella also was pretty good, they did seem to use the darker parts of the chicken however rather than just breast meat which I didn't like. The service and staff were pretty poor and made some awful mistakes which I hope were mistakes for my own sanity: - They tried to give me bottled water instead of tap water, meaning this would have cost me more if I didn't confirm it multiple times - They tried to sit my friend down again at a table as she was waiting outside for me as I was just finishing up, even though the same waitress has just served us to take payment 60 seconds prior to the aforementioned. - I began to check an email on my phone and another server tried to take my food away right in front of me, without acknowledging me or even asking me if I was finished. 3* - The food was pretty good, but each dish did appear to have a flaw, it is a little pricey but if you can get a good deal it is one of the better places to eat in Grand Central. They really do need to work on their workers making basic, cringeworthy mistakes though!

Firstly the décor - As it is also a gallery, there's a lot of art on display. There is also a great selection of vintage furniture, props and other items scattered around the space.. As we entered we were told that everything that you see is available to buy. There is so much to see in this place it would be hard to get bored. Next, the bar - The staff on the bar are incredible. They obviously knew what they were doing - they are friendly, professional and the cocktails taste amazing. Finally, the food - Again, simply incredible. I don't think I have ever had Chorizo like the meat that they serve here (it just melted in my mouth). I don't think that this was the most authentic tapas that I have tasted, and it has more of a cultured feel, but it was great all the same. Overall, I absolutely loved this place and can't wait to go back.

At first you walk down a corridor of artwork then through a reception room filled floor to cealing with beautiful items. We went to the bar at the back of the space and chatted with both the bar man and the owner of the place....again two lovely people that were more than happy to chat us through the idea of the venue and the ideas they have for its use moving forward. Drinks wise there are a lot of spirits and cocktails to choose from . As I was with LIv from Licor 43 we went for a signature serve with pineapple and 43. It was really smooth and balanced I would definately recommend it. We didnt have the food other than a cracker with some pate to sample (free of charge....very nice of them) but the menu is tapas....expect a review soon! If you havent been here yet.....do it....asap. Its a really beautiful and welcoming place with a lot to offer the area. You can be a lover of good drink, art or just bars in the area to appreciate somewhere of this quality :D Obviously.....5*

Whilst I had been aware that something new was coming to Bennett's Hill - I had no idea what that would be. Tapas is getting really big in the City at the moment. I love Tapas (both as a food and a concept). Small plates shared around a table of friends - it's a great way to try lots of things without being so stuffed you can't move at the end of a meal. I was super excited to learn that Amantia was a new Spanish restaurant with a focus on Tapas! I booked a table for lunch for 4 of us on the Saturday and perused the menu. There are lots of different types of Tapas starting from £5 and going all the way up to £10 for a meat board. Although it's not the cheapest, the prices seemed fair for a restaurant offering something different, good quality and in it's location in the centre of town. We hungrily walked down on Saturday excited to try something new! The restaurant itself looks great! Deep purple walls, smart furnishings and little touches of Spanish flair - it's so good to see this space being used and looking different. We were greeted straight away by the friendly staff and our table had been laid out prior to our arrival. Whilst we were waiting for our lunch companions, we decided to order a bottle of wine. We went for a bottle of white (which wasn't too badly priced at around £16) and had another look at the menu. When everyone was settled, we were ready to order! Although the menu recommends three tapas dishes per person, we went for two each and chose a selection of dates with cheese and bacon, pastry parcels with chorizo and black pudding and a whole range of different options off the menu. Everything ended up being amazing. The dates were a particular surprise (and a table favourite), as well as the aubergine chips and the black pudding parcels. Although we were pretty full by the end, me and Dan ordered a cheese board (with a glass of sherry) and Stuart ordered a almond cake. We were mightily impressed with the "cheese to cracker" ratio (more cheese than crackers) and the Sherry really complimented the cheese choices. All together our bill came to around £110 with tip (which wasn't bad for 9 dishes of tapas, a bottle of wine, two lagers, a glass of red wine, a sharing platter of cheese with sherry and a cake). The service, decor and food were all sublime and I was definitely impressed with this new offering.

There were three paellas and they were all pretty good; I found the seafood one to be too salty for my taste. The chicken and chorizo one was really good but definitely had strong seasoning which others might not enjoy. I think I will be back for more tapas, in any case! Churros and chocolate for dessert... so delicious. The decor is very simple and elegant, although a bit too bare for me personally, I personally think the place could use a bit more 'flavor' in it's interior design to match the food. But it didn't really detract from the experience. All of the staff we encountered were very friendly and attentive, even with an incredibly large group.

When I went in I was quickly greeted by the barman who offered me a drink, as it was lunchtime I went for a diet coke although they do offer a full bar menu with all the usual drinks you would expect plus sangria..... After living in spain for a while I am a HUGE fan of the stuff but the afternoon is just not the time or it can be a bit of a slippery slope haha. I went for the Salmon dish (Salmon a la plancha) served with almost a lentil stew and the oven baked figs....this was all on recommendation of the lovely manager Jaz. Now figs.....I wouldnt usually go for fig....not even in a fig roll situation they just dont do it for me, so naturally I thought yes to giving them a go in a more savory dish.....I have to say it was great! They served with goats cheese and honey and were actually delicious...maybe I am a convert! The salmon dish was also fresh and lovely....well presented and all the food came out quickly. Perfect at lunch time. Good vibe to the place overall and definately somewhere I will be trying more of the food in due course!

I went here with my wife and two friends as part of a yelp event. First off, I should say that I'm an avid meat eater and don't typically go for vegetarian fare. However, Marmalade is the kind of restaurant that makes me want to eat vegetarian (or at least close to it) regularly. As an appetizer I got the coffee infused lamb rump with a prune glaze, sweet potato mash, and edamame beans. It came paired with The Duke of Earl non-alcoholic aperitif which was made with fresh lemon juice, jasmine and peach syrups, and chilled earl grey tea. Both of these were excellent. The lamb was cooked perfectly and the combination of flavors and ingredients was particularly unique. For the main course I got the marmalade garbanzo: chickpea patties served in a Mediterranean stew (with carrots, courgettes, and a couple other veggies) with balsamic glaze. I wasn't sure what to think at first because I thought this meal as a main wouldn't be very filling, but boy was I wrong. It came with three giant chickpea patties (essentially giant falafals) which I almost couldn't finish. They were delicious and were very tasty drenched in the stew sauce, so I powered through. I got the Captain Ahab's Grog, which was recommended with this meal, that consisted of Brugal Dry Spiced Rum, Ginger Preserve, Apricot Liqueur, Plum bitters, and pomegranate juice. This was my favorite beverage of the evening. Additionally, the drink paired particularly well with food and I found myself eating a bite and having a sip immediately afterwards so the flavors would mix. For dessert, I got the coconut panna cotta with pineapple, mint, and chili. Again, there's nothing bad I can say about this. It was delicious. I also got the Eu Te Amo cocktail which consists of Bombay Sapphire gin, Framboise Syrup,lime, and conde villar vegan wine. Now, I don't typically like gin or wine, but despite this I enjoyed this beverage (albeit not as much as the others). Last, but certainly not least, I want to comment on the great customer service we received. Our server, Faye, was attentive, helpful, and just plain nice. I very highly recommend Marmalade and will definitely be back there myself!

The standard of food and cocktails is exceptional, and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. The space is brilliantly designed as it occupies a good section of the Rep's lobby, and has a mix of tables and spacious comfortable booths. The food and drink impressed. I usually don't go into menu details, but it's really worth talking about. We started with the coffee-infused lamb, which was absolutely divine. It was paired with an aperitif of cold earl grey tea with jasmine and peach syrup. For the main course, a vegan dish! A new addition to the menu- the 'Marmalade Garbanzo', which is chickpea patties in a mediterranean stew. So good! And filling! Paired with 'Captain Ahab's Grog'-- a rum drink with ginger, apricot, plum bitters, and pomegranate juice! Yum! And finally dessert: a coconut panna cotta with pineapple and hot chilis. Nom nom nom nom. Service was friendly and attentive, and the menu was quite reasonable! Definitely worth going for a pre or post-theatre meal, or any other day of the week for that matter. I'll be back!
