Like a fine wine or a good beer, Riggs has aged to perfection. I am afraid that this little secret has gotten out as this is still one of the best breweries in the entire state. Their beer is fresh, varied in types, and the whole vibe is still German bier garden. While we are talking about heavy hitter German brews, this place is oddly affordable, but still a thief to your wallet (in the best way possible). They started to bring food trucks around which is a good call. I look forward to come to CU so that I can stop by! This place is still the real deal and it's insane that it's in Central Illinois. You've heard of farm to table restaurants this is a gem to table brewery (at least partially). They grow corn, and barley that they use in their beers just out side the back door. The farm theme is cute and the space is large. Enjoyed the beers we tried my husband really liked the "corn wine" similar to a barley wine. It's a shame to say, but this used to be one of our favorite places to hang out with friends and have a beer in the warm weather. Unfortunately, staff were incredibly rude at our last visit and we won't be returning. They also single out customers about 'breaking the rules' but don't enforce it consistently with all their customers. Apparently water bottles are banned unless you're a mom with a Tupperware full of food, a Stanley cup, water bottles, and a picnic of snacks for the kids. I had a water bottle with me because it was 85 degrees and humid, and was scolded by staff for having an outside container and asked to put it away, meanwhile the three tables around us had the aforementioned variety of outside food and containers, and were not told to take it back to their car. I understand there are water coolers and cups to use, but the last time I used a public water cooler I got strep throat so now I've opted to keep a water bottle with me, and also need to do so out of medical necessity in the summertime. There are also polite ways to inform customers of policy, which I did not experience. Staff was also rude when I picked up my drink after calling out my name once, then saying "I don't know where this Katie is" impatiently, because it took me more than 5 seconds to reach the front of the crowd of people on a busy service night. It's unfortunate I'll no longer recommend this place to people because of the rude staff. Their drinks were otherwise good, but my recent experience has now soured that as well. My staff used to have an annual gathering at Riggs and I will be finding a new location for that as well. read more

Can't say to food but assuming it is as good as the beers; has to grab a four pack of the schwarzbier noting it's rich and complex balance. I really like Riggs but I just had the strangest experience at a bar ever. I was out with friends and I had just finished a large stein, 2 beers, probably took me an hour to finish it. I went up and got a single pint and then sat down. After sitting down an older female bartender, maybe the bar manager, came up to our table and let me know that my table was drinking to fast and quote, "you don't need to go home but we need to slow you all down". She then took my beer away and said nothing else. I don't know about you but if I had 2 beers over one hour I don't think that's fast in anyway and I have definitely seen much older clientele being served to a much higher level, bordering on over serving at this establishment. I will definitely come back but my opinion on service has gone down massively. read more

Go out in the country to get to this brewery. It's certainly a long way from the campus craziness. Riggs is a brewery operated by two U Of I graduates, and that's keeping it local. Has a pretty good selection to choose from. The place is big enough for events and gatherings. A lot different than most places to drink in the Champaign and Urbana area. It's out far away from most things, so it's pretty quiet. The place is good for families too. After hearing about it, we had to get here. We had a few beers, and we liked all these. It's about $5 a pint. They have a good variety of styles. Best one is the Hefeweizen. This one is light and smooth. For sure it's a change from the bars people typically go to around here. It's not for frat boys, for sure. There's not really any food menu but sometimes there's food trucks. read more

I am only giving them a 4 star because the person taking the order for the beer had little or no personality. She was efficient almost to the point of being rude. Disclaimer: Please try this place out for yourself! So I'll start with the good things, first I like the look and environment, very open and roomy. They also have food trucks to serve so I would look into which truck is there and when, or if you are like me you would enjoy the surprise. My colleagues at work absolutely LOVE this place and they keep making events here because it a great place for a larger crowd. Riggs was perfect for our group: five adults and one child. Two food trucks were there, Watson's Chicken and Flour N Fire Pizza. We got tenders and waffle fries from one and a slice of Funghi from the other. Food was delicious. Between us we had Red Lager, Hefeweizen, and Oktoberfest. All of us enjoyed the different styles of beer. The child played and we had plenty of dogs to say hello to. Food and beer was great. The service was friendly and efficient. They've got the cutest and sweetest cats that won my heart over. This place is a gem! Ok... back to beer now. This is a establishment I do like to go to. Their Hef beer is very good. They are social distancing and remaining free of inside seating which I can understand but miss sitting inside and chatting w friends. Exceptional Beer , atmosphere, & service. Extremely accommodating. We had a surprise 30th birthday party for our daughter there. They reserved the area for us & didn't charge a fee. We could bring all the food & decorations we wanted . All they ask is we don't bring in beverages since that's all they sell. What a deal ! A good time was had by all! It is our favorite place to go. German style beers aren't totally my preference, but I thought the weiss beer was mellow and good. They don't serve food here, but you can bring outside food in. Riggs definitely takes its beers seriously. While the outside is somewhat nondescript, the inside of the building is all about the beer business. You can see the brewing equipment right as you enter with the bar area off to your left and sort of wraps around into the building. They feature a nice selection of German style beers on tap. No food served here but there is frequently a food truck outside or you can bring your own food and they also have a private space in case you have the desire to host a party here. A great new brewery along the edge of Urbana. At first look, the outside exterior looks like a dentist building. Once inside, the brewery equipment can be seen on the right, with the comfortable bar area on the left. A horseshoe shaped wood bar, plenty of seating with couches and a large outdoor area. No TV's, which I always appreciate. Just a comfortable spot with plenty of patrons and lots of good conversation. Nice no? Service is spot on. I think most, if not all the owners were working the bar. All knowing the beers and operations of coarse. Willing to talk shop and nobody had an empty glass. They also fill growlers by purging all the oxygen, and using tubes to fill from the bottom. Not all breweries I have been to do that, which I find surprising. Good for them for doing it correctly. Little things like that shows a much better quality than say Tryptich. Seven beers on my visit. They do a mix of American style lagers and traditional German styles. Hefeweizen, Dunkelweizen, and Schwarzbier are all on point. Impressively so. It takes a lot of craft to make those styles on point without any off flavors. They also had a Nitro Porter, I am not a nitro fan so I skipped that. An adjunct lager, and a few other beers. All are well made, some are just a tad on the thin side, but for the most part not an issue at all. Of the breweries around Chambana, The Blind Pig and Riggs are the only ones on par. I am impressed with the simply, but really well crafted traditional styles. I have not had everything yet, but am looking forward to trying the rest when I can. 4 1/2 stars for now, can easily see this being 5. read more
