This is a super Y in Brown Deer, WI. Huge place with indoor track, indoor pool, any workout equipment you could want, basketball court and locker facilities. The staff is friendly and helpful. I had a hard time adjusting the machinese here so that they were at the Rite Hite. Get it. Get it. Strange design to this Subterranean YMCA that is located next to a medical facility. The medical facility gets all the good parking, so expect a little bit of a walk sometimes, to get in here. Getting here in the middle of the night was tricky because there are so many cops patrolling around this area at 3am on a Friday night, and because I guess nobody is usually out at 3 in the morning. Made it quite scary. I got followed on two separate occasions and it wasn't even a very long drive. Sleeping in the parking lot was safe enough and nobody bothered me. Once they opened up I came on in and used the facility. But lots of issues. Wi-Fi is a real problem because it's subterranean. Getting in here was a little bit of a chore. Took a lot longer than it should have and was very frustrating. I actually got quite angry at how long it took. I didn't show my anger because what's the point. I'm just expressing it here so maybe management can have a word with the front desk people and be like, yo, don't hold people up for 25 minutes just to check into a facility just because they're from out of town. Ended up cancelling half my workout because getting past the desk was so laborious and discouraging. And they need to do something about the Wi-Fi. Underground places can have good internet. Sort it out. The facility itself is pretty nice. It reminds me of the one in Evanston Illinois, it's kind of a big room with the weight equipment and cardio out in the round. It has a nice feel to it and I like it - other than the fact that it is indeed subterranean. I guess the only thing that really bothers me more than it being underground, is that a lot of the settings on a lot of the machinese, are not at the Rite Hite for me. Get it. Get it. read more

Alright, let's face it...with all the great food us Yelpers eat a gym membership is a must. So I've been going to this Y location on and off for the better part of 30 years(my parents signed me up for swim lessens when I was just a little tike). From a family perspective joining the Y was a great move for my parents. Raising 3 kids on a budget is damn near impossible, especially if you plan on keep said kids entertained. This membership provides affordable swim lessons, a variety of free workout classes, child care, and an Olympic size pool. Literally a day's worth of entertainment for every family. I've tried other gyms and found them pushy and sales driven...no I don't want nor can I afford a personal trainer. About a year ago I actually did approach someone in the fitness center at the Y and inquired on getting a personal trainer. I figured a session or two might get me off the elliptical and into the weight room for a change. When I described what I was looking to achieve they actually referred me to one of their FREE weight lifting classes that was offered with my membership. I feel like the employees really care about people here. When I'm checking in they usually remember me by name and if I forget my card(which I do often) they don't hassle me or give me a hard time about it. My parents have also kept their membership here and go regularly. My mom passed away 2 years ago and one of the employees actually came up to me and asked me why he hadn't seen her in awhile, when I told him she passed he actually started crying and told me how sorry he was. Another employee heard about my mom and actually gave me a hug and confided that he also lost his mother recently. This organization is so much more than just a gym. I grew up here and I'll probably be a member for the rest of my life. It's affordable and the people that work here really care, they aren't there for the money, they are there because they have a passion for fitness and like people. read more

If you haven't been to this Y in a few years - you won't be able to even find your way around! It was completely renovated since I was a member before 2004. I've been a member now again for about it a year and have a difficult time figuring out how to rate or review. I'll start with the positives: - Great staff - Great programs (free with membership!) - Hassle free "code" lockers (no need to carry a key around) - Plenty of equipment Being a 5:30 gym-goer, they have enough equipment that I've only had to wait a couple of times for a treadmill or elliptical and I've never had to walk away from my class. Don't get me wrong - these classes are packed! But, that just shows that people enjoy the programs. Since the classes are free and you can go anytime, I've broadened my horizons to new things and can't be happier about the body pump class. Okay, the negatives: - It is a gym. It's gross. But for a gross gym, it's okay. They have the wipes available and it is maintained the best they can. - Parking is horrible! If I weren't going to exercise, I would lower my rating just because you have to share a lot with an urgent care hospital and the enormous swim meets. My blood pressure rising from the traffic, people and barricades and the block I have to walk to get in the door is sometimes considered my warm up. I rode my bike there for the first time last week, and hope to make this a habit. - The weight room area always has tons of dudes pumping iron & hanging out, and the stretching area is right next to it. I'll just leave it at that. - Strangers with no locker room etiquette. Gross. Don't sit your naked butt on a stool. That is all. I'm happy with it. read more

Large, mostly remodeled YMCA. Membership includes free use of the fitness room, LOTS of fitness classes, hot tub, 2 pools (unless classes are going on-always call if you plan on swimming) and saunas in the men's & women's locker rooms. There are other classes available for a fee (usually fairly inexpensive), as well as childcare for kids, also for a fee. There are two childcare rooms, based on your child's age. There's also an Olympic sized pool in the building for swim classes and events, but it's not affiliated with the Y anymore, and you can't swim in there with just a Y membership. Google "Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center" for more info. There's a gym for basketball and rooms for racquetball, but I haven't used either in a long, long time. Fitness classes are excellent, the instructors are personable, friendly and just plain terrific. The remodeled fitness center is top notch. The adult locker rooms have an almost spa feel, but the locker rooms reserved for female families and male families weren't remodeled, so they're kind of depressing, and a little gross. The swimming pools (both indoor) are plain, rectangular pools. They're clean and fun for those that are good swimmers, but because of the layout of the pools they're probably not too exciting for those that can't swim well. Lifeguards I've interacted with always seem friendly and alert. The hot tub/whirlpool is smallish but not bad. No one under 18 is allowed in the hot tub. My gripe here is the limited activities for kids in the tween-age range, which is currently the age of all four of our kids (ages 9-13). Too old for childcare, and I don't want them in that anyway. I want activities we can do together. They're all old enough to go swimming without our supervision, but although I like the Y, I'm not comfortable having them in there without my husband or me. There are few classes for their ages (all pay classes at that age), and few options other than that. Three of them have gone through the fitness center class, so they can use equipment when we're in there with them, but because of the time restrictions on when they can be in there, it rarely works out. My son (11 at the time) and I were actually kicked out of the fitness center last year by the only rude employee I've ever encountered. We were in there during one of the times it's restricted to kids. It was accidental; I thought kids could be in there until 5:30pm on weekdays, but it was actually closed to kids 5pm-7pm. At 5:10pm an employee came over to my son and me (on treadmills next to each other), and told us we both had to leave. There were no more than 10 people in the whole fitness center at that time. I sweetly, jokingly asked if we could finish our treadmill times -- we had like 3 or 4 minutes left. He said no. He stood at the machines next to us while we stopped them and wiped them down. Then he asked me if I forgot the agreement my son had to sign to use the center (I said no,I'd just goofed up the time.) So he got me another copy of the agreement my son signed (I told him I didn't need it), and circled the times he's not allowed in there, so I'd be sure to not forget again. Thanks. A woman next to us said, loudly, that she couldn't believe he was being such a jerk. Unbelievably, I ended up in tears as he literally escorted us to the door of the fitness center. I was stressed out, my son was stressed out. The whole thing was stupid. I talked to an employee at the front desk there about it, have e-mailed the Y about this, and have responded to their big online survey about this, but have never gotten a response. The guy that escorted us to the door was Rick, or Ricky, as I've heard him been called. He's still there, and apparently nice to most people, but he has never, ever acknowledged me or my son since that day, even though we've both seen him on many occasions since (me more so, because my son rarely goes anymore). In theory, I understand the reasoning behind the hour restrictions for kids, but in practice they're dumb and unnecessary. And I'm not too happy about Rick, either. So, I think this Y is great in most ways, especially if you're an adult never planning on having kids, or you're an adult with little kids that will never reach middle school age. Considering they actually changed their name a few years ago to the Rite Hite FAMILY YMCA, I expect more family activities. For families. Not just activities for parents alone, for young kids alone, and a few pay classes/restricted hours in the fitness center, or unsupervised pool time for kids in the pre-teen to early teen years. The kids need fun fitness activities, especially in the winter, and that was the reason we originally got our family membership. Since they've reached middle school age, my husband and I mostly go alone together when they're not home, or take turns going alone when they are home. Not exactly what I'd expect any YMCA to be like, especially one that has the word Family in their title. read more

This is not my favorite Y, but it's the closest to my home. I prefer the Y downtown. My biggest issue with this Y is that the equipment is falling apart including the weights. The material around the weights are literally falling off. The Y is not a cheap monthly payment so I would expect to have at least decent equipment. Otherwise it's not bad. It would also be nice to be able to use the bag room. It is always locked unless there is a class. If I pay for a membership I feel that I should have at least an hour access to utilize the room for a work out. read more

The new YMCA is as good as it gets when looking at a gym. All the equipment is brand new and it always has enough cardio machines. The YMCA has three pools, saunas, and a steam room. The only negative thing I can say about this place is the locker security. Although the lockers are fancy, they are very easy to break into. So if I were you, I'd leave my valuables at home. read more

Out of all the YMCA's in the area, the Rite-Hite YMCA is one of the best ones. It looks pretty new/remodeled and I have never had any issues with any of the equipment!! The only thing is that the classes are always packed, so you need to arrive really early for pretty much any group exercise classes...specially since their biggest studio can only have 50 people per class!!! read more

This place is a dump. The equipment is broke and worn out. The electronic lockers are junk. The carpet and walls are filthy, the vending machines don't take credit cards. The staff does not acknowledge you exist when you check in. To get in the building you have to walk through a bunch of sick people in the walk- in clinic area. The only reason they have members is because it's cheap. I hope they go out of business. I been lifting for 25 years and this is the worst gym I been too. Update the equipment or call it quits and shut down. read more

I contact the head instructor for private lesson and he directed me on the Superstar program. It is $60 for 8 lessons in group with one instructor and sometimes 2 instructors, staying out of the pool. My 6 years old son obtained 3rd level (out of 6 at the YMCA), enjoyed the January-February 2011. He was considered at the end as a novice swimmer by the Schroeder instructor. Our son has asthma and Shroeder team told us that swimming is good for kid with asthma. For the March-April 2011, my son refused to enter in the pool at the 4th lesson. We tried the 5th without success. The instructor totally ignored him and my husband and I who tried to invite our son to go over his refusal. I asked the head instructor a refund and after e-mails, I received $25, that is 3.33 lessons. I guess I have to be happy to have this refund. Nevertheless, I wrote that I was hoping the instructor to " cheer" the kid up. The head instructor answered that" it is not our instructors job to try to "cheer" a child up in order to get them in the water. If they do not want to swm, they should not be in the program. This is not a learn to swim program, but a novice swim team. Also when time is spent to try to get someone just to get in the pool, it takes away attention from the kids that are eager to get in the water." I get the point of "take away attention" other kids and perhaps my English is not good enough to have chosen the word "cheer up" but I guess " invitation" And synonyms can work... I know they are the best swimming club in WI, so they don't have to run to find parents to pay their lesson, still the friendliness is quiet interesting when they are challenged by a kid who is feeling in Failure... read more

If I could give zero stars I would! My 11and 4yr old daughters were attending the summer camp at this YMCA recently. The summer camp was extremely unorganized and in my opinion had enrolled entirely to many children. During the times we had heavy rains at the end of June they did not have adequate spacing for all of the campers and the additional Browndeer High School students who was using the gym as well. The final draw with this summer camp was my 4yr old nearly-drowning and them trying to cover it up. She was left at the poolside unattended and fell into the pool without anyone noticing until they seen her hands and feet at the top of the pool frantically. No YMCA staff spoke directly to me after the incident occurred nor did they make contact with anyone on her emergency contact list. The incident took place at 10:00am per the incident report and a voicemail was left on my phone at 11:49am.DO NOT send your children here this summer camp is poorly run and there's a lack of competent adults who are knowledgeable on providing care for children. THIS SUMMER CAMP IS NOT A SAFE PLACE FOR CHILDREN!! read more

It's a nice gym, but the staff members at the front desk move very slowly. Usually takes about 2-3 minutes just to get checked in. If you are ever trying to get a workout in while there is a swim meet going on at the Schroeder pool next door, good luck finding parking and good luck dealing with the extremely rude parking staff. read more
