Wonderful olde English atmosphere. Very good selection of beers on tap. Staff is very helpful in setting up patrons with dishes that allow for dietary restrictions (like gluten intolerance). What I particularly liked is that they were able to make fish and chips for me that was panko breaded rather than battered. I know battered fish and chips is the 'English' way, but few restaurants this side of the Atlantic get battered fish right. All too often it's too much batter, or the fish is really greasy. I didn't feel like taking a chance, so the kitchen breaded my fish and it was really nicely done. The bread pudding is also a standout. THE THORNS: None worth mentioning. THE VERDICT: Fox and Hounds is one of those rare pubs that puts as much (or more?) thought into their food as they do their beer. It's a wonderful 'little bit 'o Britain' in the quiet backwater town of Ladysmith BC Highly recommend!

Unfortunately, we were served two Mexican Lagers instead. After patron at a neighboring table also ordered the same beer, but was given something entirely different, not a lager, but also not the expected ale. Both the server and the bartender were friendly but totally incompetent. The bartender said she never even looks at the specials chalk board in the foyer, which is actually a necessity for her job, and that they were out of the ale and were given the new revolving beer. The lager I was given had soured a bit as well. Whenever I'm traveling and find fish and chips made with cod I get the plate, as I did at this establishment. Both me and one other person who ordered the fish and chips agreed that it was not cod at all. It had none of the characteristics of cod, and the beer batter was not flakey but overcooked, hard and crunchy. Nice ambiance however.

It was a nice little pub that also made their own craft beer. They are located in Duncan. I was told before coming here their crispy chick sandwich is the best. We ordered a 2 appetizers to share: calamari and crispy buffalo chicken. I got a virgin lemonade and the crispy chicken sandwich. The food was good given the fact that it is located in a small town. I found the lemonade a bit watered down. It was quite tasteless or maybe it had too much ice. The calamari was very tasty. It wasn't like super crispy but you can tell that the calamari was very fresh. It was not chewy. The crispy buffalo chicken was super spicy. Good thing it had ranch on the side to dilute the spiciness. The chicken wasn't very crispy. The chicken was a bit dry. The chicken sandwich was ok. It wasn't wow wow. They did flattened the chicken before breading it in panko and then deep frying it. The chicken was more on the dry end. I liked how it was served very hot. So you know it was made upon order. I wished they added more sauce to the burger. They were generous on the cheese. The chicken was crispy and not oily. I had my burger with onion rings for an extra $2. They were very generous on the onion rings. They didn't have any special sauce for the onion rings. They served with ketchup. Most places served it with chipotle mayo. I would say food was more on the lower end of 3 and service was 4 stars. I believe Craig Street is one of the two bigger restaurants in the small downtown of Duncan. Good thing is that there are plenty of free parking everywhere. It is definitely a good meeting/hangout spot with friends.

Love this pub. Bartender is amazing. Love the back var and the wood work. Will be back.read more

There were three of us and each ordered something different. All of us enjoyed our meal very much; Tuna Tartar, wings, hamburger and one other entrée - all was very good, well presented, along with great service and polite employees. I would certainly recommend the Youbou Bar & Grill to everyone. The scenery also was great and relaxing! Arlene S. Burnaby, B.C.

Got there and sat for 20 mins and nothing. Got up and asked for menus. Another 15 to get water and for the server to greet us. Got our food ordered after another 15 and watched 4 tables that came after us get their food, eat it, pay and leave!!! After over an hour, didn't see a waitress for twenty, no one came and apologized or even told us the food would be late. I finally got up and asked about it and was greeted with open hostility. Waited another 10 mins and told them I wanted the food to go. They were so harsh about it. Like I was the one that did something horrible to them. They even told me it was my fault because i ordered a pizza!!! A burger, a beer and a personal pizza was over 60 dollars!! When i got home the pizza wasn't even cooked fully!!! I do have to admit, the burger tasted amazing. i tried a bite of my sons and it was really good. Maybe if you got it as take out and gave them a lot of time to get it ready it might be worth it. Otherwise, don't go there!!!!

Definitely not the case at Pastimes on our visit this evening. Our server Teresa was excellent, even though she was quite busy. She happily answered our questions about the food, and the choices we were going to make. We shared a house salad which was plentiful and had a nice accompaniment of dried cranberries and almonds. Both items are things that are often scrimped upon as they are complimentary items that aren't an inexpensive addition. For our mains I got the meatloaf with mashed potatoes, and the lovely K the turkey dinner. Both were excellent, with the meatloaf wrapped by bacon, likely the local Hertel variety which was incredible. Real mashed potatoes and veggies cooked to my perfect taste along with gravy. Easy 5 out of 5, as was K's turkey, also accompanied by mashed potatoes and veggies. The decor is pure sports bar, but the sound on the tv's was down so you could actually talk without the usual noise. The Canucks were in Nashville so we watched the game and enjoyed a very very nice meal. Sadly we couldn't finish it all, and with a travel day tomorrow we had to send it away, what a shame. We will most definitely be back the next time we are in Port Alberni.
