However, our guide Caleb (who is probably a perfectly nice guy under different circumstances) does not have a clue how to interact with kids. His irritation that we had children in our party (and non-athletic kids who needed guidance on how to paddle at that) was quite apparent for the entire duration of our voyage. It put me on edge, feeling like I had to be apologetic for not having raised big strapping boys who'd spent their summers on the water, and I ended up spending the time barking orders at my kids because I was nicer about it than he was, and wanted him to lay off. At one point he started shouting at us all to paddle, then immediately realized we were paddling straight into a cluster of rocks and told us to stop - but it was too late. My eldest son and I went flying over the side of the raft. He was plucked from the water immediately, but I wasn't so lucky. My husband held out his oar for me to grab onto, but by then the raft was already too far away. I followed the instructions I had been given for such an event, floating and bobbing along until another raft pulled upside of me and was able to pull me aboard. Mind you, this experience didn't upset me: I didn't get hurt, I never felt I was in any real danger, and now I had a story to tell. But when my rescue raft dropped me off in the raft with my family, Caleb proceeded to chew me out for "letting go of the raft" (huh? I was never holding onto the raft?) Later on, my kids told me that after I'd fallen over, when no one knew how to proceed (try to save mom or keep moving?) he actually screamed at them to "Paddle, damnit!" The views were absolutely gorgeous. And we got to see a bald eagle.

The guys at Wildwater are a great group of knowledgeable and experienced rafters. When you are heading there, you may seem to think that these guys don't care, or know what they are doing, but as soon as they hit the water, its a mixture of seriousness and fun, all in one. Dave was our guide and we couldn't have asked for a better guide. He took us "surfing" on every chance we had and was very good at dealing with my two young nieces that were on our raft. Even though he fell, or should I say was popped out, of the boat when we went through "Razor Rock" he quickly got back in the boat without missing a beat..(Sorry you had to buy your friends a case of beer).. Anytime I go back to Gatlinburg or the surrounding area, I would be sure to visit Wildwater again and would specifically ask to ride with Dave again.. Check them out, it is great!

I went down the river on 5/21, and we had a great experience with NOC on the Upper Pigeon River…read more On our first day, because I am a bit spacey, I somehow ended up in the middle of the mountains with no gas station nearby and on Empty. Thankfully, I noticed it when we were very close to a rest area, so we did not end up stranded on the side of the road. Triple A came out, and all was well, but we missed our original rafting time. When we called NOC Upper Pigeon, they allowed us to reschedule for the next day without any fee or hassle. I was very grateful for that because it would have been awful to have to pay again just because we missed it. The check-in process was very smooth. Everything was clearly explained; the instructions were easy to follow, the bus ride was short, and the bus was clean. "@b****nee" was our guide, and she was really great at her job. You could tell she genuinely enjoyed it, and she shared a lot of interesting information about the river. One of the best parts was that she tried to get a sense of whether we wanted a more adventurous ride or something a little calmer. Being able to tailor the experience a bit to what we wanted made it even better. At one of the rapids, I ended up falling out of the raft (it happens), and "@b****nee" basically turned into Hercules and helped me get back in easily. I am not someone who is very easy to please, but @b****nee was excellent. You can tell she enjoys what she does, and she was also very hospitable, professional, and reassuring throughout the trip. Overall, it was a great experience.

The bathrooms at the parking lot were clean. Everything here was very functional. There are push carts in the parking lot if you have gear you need to shuttle between your car and the boat, which is convenient. Douglas Lake wasn't overly crowded which was welcome. Had fun on tubing with the family and the water was very warm in July, which was expected. We had a perfect time on the lake. Good family fun to be had here.
