Maine Trip #1…read more "Something will have gone out of us as a people if we ever let the remaining wilderness be destroyed ... We simply need that wild country available to us, even if we never do more than drive to its edge and look in." ― Wallace Stegner, The Sound of Mountain Water Androscoggin Riverlands State Park (ARSP) first came to my attention while in Maine visiting my family. I had never heard of it before, and when I did some research, I found out why. ARSP opened six years ago, but hardly anyone was using this amazing park. A year ago, they put up more trail signs in order to encourage people to visit, in the hopes that they won't be so nervous about getting lost in the 2,700 acres, 12 miles of river frontage, and 22 miles of trails. History: The Androscoggin River is the 3rd largest river in Maine, and it begins in the mountains of New Hampshire. The Native Americans camped and fished for at least 9,000 years, and they gave the river its name--meaning "plenty of fish." Thanks to riverfront industries, the Androscoggin River became one of the ten most polluted rivers in the country back in the 1960s, but thankfully, the Clean Water Act in 1972 helped water quality improved tremendously. Amenities: * Toilet (outhouse--these things are probably way better than portable toilets. Open-air and wood building makes for no odor. * Large, dirt parking lot * No fee * ATV riding * Canoeing * Cross-country skiing * Fishing * Hiking (trails) * Horseback riding * Hunting (except Sundays) * Kayaking (two water landings) * Off-road biking * Picnicking * Snowmobiling * Snowshoeing * Watchable wildlife * Carry In-Carry Out * Pets welcome (on a leash at all times) * 8 old foundations show the community that existed here before 1927 I had a wonderful time hiking the Homestead Trail. It has several different terrain and lots to see. Unfortunately, I didn't know exactly how far the trail would go, so I turned around. (I now have a trail map and will post it.) At one point, I did lose cell signal so be prepared for that. Make sure you bring bug spray! I didn't see a single soul while I was on my hike, which is wonderful for me. I love the solitude and the "wilderness" at ARSP. I think you will too.

Relax and connect or reconnect , discover what in the end is important. Thumbs up, planning on going this year, honestly I hope to go every year to hang out with family as long as I can physically. Something about it I find it difficult to describe. The first year I went it was after one of my daughters lost her love due to a freak accident, it was his favorite place. It became a special place were a person could disconnect from stress and just hang out with the people that really matter. Thank you

They would not give a credit or refund. I understand no refunds due to inclement weather but this is a hurricane we're talking about, not just some rain. So not only do they require full payment via check only, they refuse to be flexible due to a hurricane. Infact they are staying open and allowing guests to still come even though it is extremely dangerous to do so. They way they conduct business is wrongful and the staff was very rude and inconsiderate. This may be a "cute" campground but I advise to choose another campground with more friendly staff and one that allows payment via credit card.

My family of 22 booked almost $1000 at the Bethel outdoor adventures in campground for a day of tubing down the river. We were greeted with a long snarl of a face in the main office and while still on the river with multiple family, waiting for us to get off the river, they were yelled at and mistreated by Erin. And when I got off, I went to retrieve my keys to leave, and I was treated as if I was a moron when I tried to explain that I just had given her a fob, not a full set of keys. She treated me like I was a two year-old idiot and was very sassy with me and again with her long snarl of a face. This is not how Customers should ever be treated and you should not be the face of this company. I highly recommend another tubing company if you visit Bethel Maine

The staff is super friendly and the store sells ice and other necessities. Every RV spot has a great ocean view and a personal trash bin that campground staff picks up everyday. No fault of the campground obviously but it was abnormally hot when we visited for 3 nights. The horseflies were very intense and were hard to get away from without being in the RV. The area is very tidal and you can walk very far out at low tide. It's a fun campground in a unique setting. Highly recommend but be prepared for all types of weather.

You can't reserve online, or pick your site, communication is minimal, the campground needs lots of attention. This place has great potential. It's on the water and there is a really cool spot by some big boulders. But the bath houses are terrible. There are two bath houses and at Bath house 1 - There were nails through the space where a pad lock goes, the floor feels like it is failing in on the porch surround, the 2 shower rooms are dark and dingy with peeling painted concrete floors. We didn't see the shower room at Bath house 2 because it was always occupied since there is only one shower in this building for a lot of tent sites. There are no mirrors in the bathrooms (there are in the shower rooms) . The property needs some TLC - landscape, mowing and trash pick up. There are cluttered spots of old junk laying around. It would be a great place to start a campground.
