It's unfortunate that there are so many negative reviews about this facility! I wish that every patient/ family members would have had the experience we have had here at Riveredge!! Within 9 months my son had been admitted on 7 different occasions to 4 different facilities. Since my son had recently turned 18 he was legally able to sign the 5 day release. It's unfortunate that the doctors at these other facilities didn't take his mental state into account before just releasing him just because he signed the 5 day! I am in the medical field myself and understand the laws in Illinois that protect patients from being held against their will. But with that I also know that if a patient is a danger to himself ans is not stable enough to be released it doesn't matter if they signed the 5 day or not. Their mental state, safety, and wellbeing come first! Obviously the true issues were never addressed since he would return continue to the ER within weeks of being released. At every facility he had gone to they would medicate him and then release him. Even tho the problem was still very obvious and he continued to be a danger to himself!! At the last ER visit the therapist there finally listened to all of our concerns and asked us where we would like for her to try first to get him transferred to. After negative experiences at 3 different facilities we asked her what she would suggest. At that time she named a couple of facilities in the area and then added that the only place she wouldn't suggest sending him to is Riveredge. So when she came back almost 2 hours later and told us the only place that had a bed available for him was Riveredge I was extremely disappointed and feared it would just be one more wasted stay where my son would not get the help he so badly needed!! SHAME on her for speaking on behalf of a hospital she obviously knew nothing about!! SHAME on her for being one of the "professionals" who has contributed to giving this facility a bad rep!! I understand that this is a mental health hospital! Along with that comes patients that don't want to be there, don't feel they need to be there, and unfortunately can only see the negative! So I can understand the negative reviews from patients. I guess I could understand negative reviews from their family members as well since this is definitely a very stressful situation to be in. With that I wonder if these people have experienced any other mental health hospitals in the area. Because Riveredge has by far been the best hospital my son has been admitted to in the last 9 months!! He was first admitted to their ITU unit and then was transferred to 2 North before transferring to their brand new residential unit. Every single person I have come in contact with on all of those units has been extremely professional, caring, friendly, understanding, and helpful!! Every aspect of his stay has been exceptional! Whether it's calling to speak with my son, or the staff, or going there in person to visit him every single person I have come into contact with has been amazing!! The ladies at the front desk are always extremely friendly! The nurses on every unit he has been on have been wonderful! Barbara...his therapist has gone above and beyond to ensure my son is getting the care he needs and always takes time out of her extremely busy schedule to call and update us every step of the way! Dana....the coordinator of their new residential program has also been extremely helpful in his transition to that unit!! I visit every time they have visiting hours and have seen the patients in that unit who seem to be happy to be there! They are all very friendly and make sure to smile and make small talk when I have gone to visit! I wish I knew everyone else's name who I've come into contact with on each one of the units he's been on. Because they have all been wonderful!! This was the FIRST and ONLY hospital where he has received the help he needed!! Of course when he was admitted the first thing he did was sign the 5 day. BUT the doctors recognized that he was still a danger to himself and was not safe enough to be released! They were actually able to get him to see that he needed help and he ended up withdrawing the 5 day. That in itself is huge! He has been there for a little over a month now and only has a couple weeks left before completing their residential program. He's stayed there this long because he's finally getting the help he needs! He can technically check himself out at any point now but he hasn't because he can see the difference they are making in his life! I can not thank the staff at Riveredge enough for EVERYTHING they have done for my son and even me....his stressed out and worried mom!! You have all literally played a part in giving me my son back and I will forever be grateful!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!! read more

My first time I was here it was okay I was like in my teens and I was in the young adults division of the hospital and the food was ok some staff was nice but my room was haunted I couldn't sleep some nights because of a white spoiled trash boy there kept talking about someone with a gun in the hospital and how the staff has a gun and they want to kill patients. I sort of believe him because as I was complaing about extreme pain in my body I was told to go back to my room I thought I was having an anxiety attack ptsd response I don't know it was so long ago (child abuse in the past/ violence, I'm traumatized) but umm yeah I ordered some food and I was an attractive person at the time and anyway this fat ass black man that looks forest Whitaker who was the staff at the time I don't know what his position at the hospital was but he was wearing a grey shirt keeps his hair in a buzz cut. And he assaulted me and put me in a chokehold banged my head against the wall really hard. I passed out and they gave me a shot and put me on the bed and I don't remember a thing. Uhh hello that's attempted murder. I hope the thug rots in prison. That's borderline rape. But it was nasty in there. Hang them. I'm still taking these nasty caca people to court. But I left. Didn't talk to anyone there they were all weird. They all smelled like farts. It was totally racist in there. I got death threatened constantly and nothing was done about it. I felt suicidal there and even after leaving the hospital. I have ptsd now niggers!!! Fuck you niggers!!! My sister has been in this nightmare factory for a little over 24 hours. I just got off the phone with her and was told she caught a male staff member WATCHING PORN ON HIS PHONE last night. There are people fighting constantly and one man is particularly violent. Her bed was riddled with pubic hair but she was afraid to say something out of fear of someone labeling her as being problematic and trying to keep her there longer. I cannot believe how awful it sounds. She was also asked to sign something say she was voluntary admitting herself and when she asked if she didn't have to sign it, was told she'd have to go to court. If you have a loved one here, do whatever you can to get them out. There is no possible way that anyone who needs mental health care can actually get it in that sort of environment. It is dirty, stressful and scary as hell. I'm calling the Illinois Department of Public Health, NAMI and anyone else who will listen about what she's experienced in just 24 hours the moment they open tomorrow. Mental illness runs in our family like many others and as much as I've never been hospitalized, I've been to many psychiatric health centers/hospitals and this one is the absolute worst by an incredibly large margin. My mother was once sent to a rehab facility after a long hospitalization where I found a bloody band-aid on the bed upon her arrival and the nurse didn't even know the correct oxygen saturation level for her concentrator... somehow this place is worse. I was in a pretty bad place in my life when I got sent in there but this place definitely worsened my situation. I was supposed to go in there to focus on getting better but how was I supposed to do that when all I wanted was to leave. It was a very traumatic experience for a first hospitalization. They wake you up at like 3-4 am every night to check your vitals & it's rare to get a nurse with good bedside manners. I literally wanted to die with how bored I was. Only good entertainment was playing uno w the other patients. They'd play a movie or two sometimes. The staff needs more training. I am part of the LGBTQ+ community & I was highly offended by some comments a staff member made during group therapy. She said that we make coming out moments so dramatic and that it's not that big of a deal. The only staff member I liked was my therapist. She was pretty great & was so nice to me. There was this one staff member who needs to learn how to treat psych patients if not she definitely needs to go find some other job. A patient is there because they obviously need help & so this one patient was having a rough day and was triggered by a staff member & she called the the staff member a "b*tch" & she replied w "takes to be one to know one" . Like whatdidshesayyy. Lady, pleaseeeee, you have your own issues please keep them at home and away from work. Don't get me started on the food. Disgusting. When I left I ate as if it were my last meal. I lost two pounds in the week that I was there. I don't think that was healthy. I'm a junior in high school and I have pretty advanced school work so being given basic geometry that I learned in sixth grade for "schooling" was a definite bruh moment. F*ck riveredge. read more

I felt like I was sending my daughter to the slaughter. People were poorly trained and it felt like an unsafe environment. Some people that worked there look like they just escaped from prison! My daughter stayed longer because her "therapist" was on leave.They milked the insurance for a 15 day stay! She got a total of maybe three hours of individual counseling the whole time she was there. They don't follow the schedule on weekends it's all for show. She told me the group leader was too busy to hear their story and rather talked about all his mistresses, mid you this is the girls unit! Not happy, this nasty place should be closed down. She spent 15 days in the hell hole when it could have taken a few session with her therapist. STAY AWAY! They care about your money, bottom line! Horrible place period!!!My daughter came here just to get a simple assessment related to the things she was going through. Long story short they pressed my daughter into saying things they wanted to hear. As so as they got her to say it they admitted her without our knowledge. And wouldn't let her leave. I had to call the cops to sort things out. Eventually we got out. The people who work there are lower than scumbags Particularly the intake managers Marjani Parker filth of the earth. They were counting the number of beds that need to be filled but I know it's all about financial gain at this shit hole. Julio Sandoval did an awful job. He kept me locked up way too long. He is verbally abusive to patients and rude to other staff members. He called a few of the black patients "Blackie". This hospital is completely unprofessional. The hospital is only a pit stop for the mentally ill and will only blame them for their issues in the end instead of finding them true help. For this and many other reasons, they should be closed down due to their unethical and disgraceful practice. I will never be returning to this hospital for any help at all. My 15 year old ( Honor student) daughter tried to commit suicide and her mother inroled her into this place to cover up the issues that lead to it. I've made several calls for access to my child and she's tried to communicate that she doesn't want to live with her mother and her husband anymore (she's married to her father's childhood friend) WHY any authorities haven't been contacted (except by me) baffles me. This place is a nightmare. I was falsely institutionalized and they said they would get me out right away and it took 2 days. Staff is rude and inconsiderate. They don't give you the right doses of medications when you're on them or forgot to give them to you. It's just like jail. Do not recommend. Good is awful and they are extremely slow. read more
