I went to the bar to order some drinks during my visit. I have a condition similar to MS and very shaky and unsteady on my feet. The lady serving me (I'm so sorry I didn't get her name and should have) was sensational - she bought the drinks over to our table for me - I didn't even need to ask her! A winner!!! I've spent most of my time in the US, so I wasn't expecting much from this place when I ordered a burger. But, WOW!!! It was a refreshing, tasty surprise! You could taste the flavor in everything from the quality beef to the vegetables. These days, most vegetables are flavorless so it is a welcomed surprise when a restaurant uses quality ingredients. In addition to the food, the location is great! It's right on the river and in a quiet location so it is a great spot to enjoy some time outdoors. Located in the heart of the CBD right on the Yarra river, Riverland offers great views of the Melbourne skyline and plenty of outdoor seating. Despite the winter chill, the outdoor seating area was plenty warm enough with the various heaters. The music is not too loud and the array of holiday lights makes for an atmosphere that's perfect for a girls night or a romantic date. Food was tasty, but portions were smaller than I anticipated. I enjoyed a glass of mulled wine ($10!!), which I highly recommend to beat the winter blues. read more

Had lunch there today, and they nearly poisoned my son. We went for an early lunch (11.45am) with my 2 year old son, so it was still quite quiet. We ordered him fish and chips from the kids menu and when it arrived, it didn't feel as hot as you would expect for something that had been freshly cooked. So, luckily, I cut it half down the middle and the centre of the fish was raw, still cold to the touch and in places still frozen. Thank goodness I checked rather than let my hungry child just tuck in. Now, you might expect that after nearly poisoning a child that there might have been some sort of urgency or desire to make a gesture towards us, but no, we got a refund on the childs menu item and that was it, despite the fact that neither me or my partner really wanted to finish our food. Any venue that, when it isn't even busy, sends raw food out to children clearly has seriously health issues going on in their kitchen. Go, have a drink, enjoy the river view. I've been here a few times, and the one really annoying thing about this place is that if it starts to rain then you are in a lot of trouble (which is just what happened the last time I popped in here). Anyway, this is a bar on the banks of the Yarra set up in some old storage sheds located underneath Fed Square. There is also an elevator that takes you from Fed Square down to the bar (or you can simply use the stairs). While the bar does have some indoor areas it is mostly outdoors, under cover, but not entirely undercover. Also, it does get pretty crowded most days (and nights), and the selection of beers aren't all that great either. Still, I do like the atmosphere, and the fact that it sits alongside the Yarra. read more

Located on my favourite bike path in Melbourne, the Main Yarra Trail, the other day it was beautiful weather and I set out on the ride to Riverland in the need of the best gourmet organic hotdog in town. I could tell that I was getting close as the intoxicating smell of the barbecue started to make me salivate. I put my bike down and followed my nose to where the smell was coming from only to be stopped in my tracks as I saw a display cabinet filled with the Argentinian delight that is the empanada. It looked a little big to be a real empanada but whilst reminiscing about how good they were in Argentina I had to have one. It wasn't the same. I should have stuck to what I know Australians do best...barbecue! Riverland is the perfect place to get the real Victorian experience of sitting by a river eating a barbecue and having a beer. Don't get me wrong Riverland is a great place, especially for a warm summer's day or evening, where you can hear the light wash of the river heading its merry way towards the sea. But the fact is that this place is super expensive. Unless you are prepared to pay $12 a pint for a very average beer or $15 a pint for a slightly better than average Asahi beer - then you are probably better off heading under the bridge situated near-by to drink goon with the street bums. A happening spot along the yarra river, it seems as though you can somehow snag a table with a waiter to get food and drinks or order from the walk up window. A pint is $14AUD which is probably normal for the aussies but a little shocking coming from the US. Perhaps you pay for the setting. They had a good cover band that did a lot of popular songs from the fray to the killers to plain white tee's. Yes It is true. Riverland is in a fantastic location 'under' Federation Square by the Yarra in Melbourne. Head down the stairs near Transport in Fed Square, it is not signposted, so if you don't know it's there....well you don't know it's there. See the elevator? Yes, it's the stairs right next to it. The location and venue are fantastic....if I was a visitor to Melbourne I would live here. FACT. Problem is though I'm not. While a Sunday session by the Yarra is enchanting, the stingy potions of food and expensive drinks keep locals away.... so if you're up for a $12 for a pint of cider then yes Riverland is great, but for a more local friendly vibe, head elsewhere! Great location on the Yarra river, which btw apparently used to not be all muddy and gray (used to be clear before the industrialization of Melbourne led to the riverbanks feeding the river with clay). Tried to come for a beer in the late afternoon on Saturday, however didn't feel like standing alone watching the locals who consumed every spot in the place. Instead came for breakfast on a Sunday morning and grabbed a table by the water (pick your table before ordering). Had a good cappuccino and asparagus frittata. The view of the rowers, the shade under the large maple tree and the pre summer day heat all made for a great morning start to the day. read more

This has been established for some time now, and on a summer's day it's a great place to sit and watch over the river and how life goes on, and all the passers by within it. Riverland is not exactly what I have envisaged for my 100th review, but alas I did not have the funds for something special and awesome. It's contained within some of the original vaults of the Flinders Street "North-Bank" heritage railway viaducts. Riverland while ostensibly modern still retains it's innate heritage and charm. All day long barbeque's, and sausage sizzles are key in summer,and there's normally some sort of ace outdoors food thing going on. When the whether is fine. I think the first time I was here was in 2006, and I've been back a few times. Riverland has its own little lift for easy access. If you're entering from Princess Bridge, But the walk ain't hard so there's not much need for this. I'm speculative about the inside space; there doesn't seem much but I've never needed to venture in. Despite the fact that it looks somewhere I want to go. Drinks are ordered from a booth/open window style arrangement and this is pretty cool. A walk up bar no less. Most people are here to have a good time, and chill out, and thankfully there's not the seemingly endless onslaught of douche-bag's that you might find regularly populating Chapel street. I'm sure it's still radtastic in winter, but in the warmer months it's a like an all day BBQ at your mate's place. Ace! read more

I have been to Riverland a few times.. I find its a great meeting place in the city with excellent views of the beautiful Yarra River. The atmosphere is great as its mostly always busy & the food is always great too. Today we had grilled procuitto wrapped cutlets with truffle patè - devine, so good! The twice cooked caramel pork belly - delicious although it had a 'toffee' sauce which occasionally got stuck to the roof of my mouth - my only fault. The peking duck & shitaki mushroom arancini which had a mouth watering plum sauce, I recommend this dish as I definitely wanted more! Also the grilled cypriot halloumi with olives and cherry tomatoes was a nice side too. Weather you go to Riverland just for a few ales or a meal I do recommend people to give it a try, its in such a great Melbourne CBD location. You can't go wrong really :) read more

I have been to Riverland for many a nights for drinks and general partying but never realized that they did any other sort of food, other than the BBQ sausages that you can smell from a mile off. So when a friend suggested that we go there for breakfast. So Riverland, during the day, for brunch not beers... I was not sure what to expect... Pros * The coffee was really quite good (yes, it is true, I was shocked) * The view, the Yarra does look good in the morning sun * The food was really quite good! We were all really delighted with what we got and all wanted to order more! Cons * No table service - I knew this going in but the dance of saving table, ordering food from the bar is not what you expect for breakfast * I wish they turned that BBQ off! Riverland has a lot of pros - prime riverside location, good funky tunes, the sort of grub that you want from a pub if you're not settling in for a meal (ie. a bbq with gourmet sausages) which is all reasonably priced as are the beers and wines. The cons? Well con, is that it gets REAL busy here, especially on Friday afternoon/early evening for beers. You can forget about a table, but if you're happy to stand and admire the view and a few beautiful people every now and again then it's a lot better here than up the steps in Fed Square. read more

Riverland became my 'city home' for a couple of years... and I still consider it fondly, always coming to mind whenever I think "where shall I set up camp with friends for a full night's drinking and raucous discussion?" Best in the spring and autumn, mid afternoon to mid evening, where the river views, vibe of the patrons and people watching of the passers-by is at its prime IMO. The food has always bee of good quality although small portions, especially given the pub feel but silver service price tag. Oh, that's right,the silver service is in the atmosphere and views.... so yes, worth it;) Don't get me wrong, the staff have usually been great, polite, efficient, attentive and fun for a classy bar! The heaters are fantastic in winter (get inside the main platform and side-pull down clear walls) is you need/want to be outside, but if you're not a smoker, and have a problem with it, then this is not your place. My main gripe? Even though there are a few good choices on the menu, the organic sausages with onion and/or sauerkraut are the real winners here. On a sunny weekend the only way you're guaranteed to get a seat is if you get there early in the morning, which then gives you a chance to try out their breakfast.
