This is a nice place right on the water. I've been here a few times since I usually stay in the area and it's convenient and within walking distance for me. Sometimes it's slow, other times it's been busy, but I've never had any issue finding a place to sit. They have a small indoor area, and a covered outside, as well as seats on the outside by the river. Pricing is reasonable and everyone I've interacted with has always been friendly. I've only gotten drinks and snacks (like chips) here, so I can't speak to most of the food. Great spot for hanging out or a date. read more

6 of us stopped in here at the start of our birthday celebrations last night. We started out with some draft beers and bottles of wine. We really enjoyed this secret garden Cabernet. We saw the bar menu had some really yummy sounding appetizers, we couldn't resist the halloumi fries and the Cajun charred zucchini. Both were delicious. The fries had a smoked beetroot yogurt, spring onion, and walnut spice dip- so so yummy. The zucchini had cashew cream, pickled and fried shallots, and soft herbs. I'm hungry again just thinking about it. We all agreed we would definitely come back here again. The food was yummy. The staff was friendly. Views were great, both of the water front, and also for people watching. We will definitely be back again soon. So many other yummy things on their menu to try. read more

I like this place but I'm sure it's better with warmer weather. TBY was a short walk from my hotel so I gave it a try. This is the type of place where you either order at the bar and find a seat or order via phone. I'm not a fan of that but that's becoming pretty popular here. I ordered the Angus burger and a cider. The cider is always good and I really liked the burger. The milk bun was soft and the burger was juicy. I'm not a fan of the pickles but I'm a foreigner so it's probably just something I'm not familiar with. There wasn't any service to speak of as explained above. I like the location (right on the river) and the price was fine for the area. I'd recommend giving it a try. read more

Great place for a relaxing lunch or dinner. We were at a shopping center nearby and had shopped till we dropped and needed some food. Located on the banks of the Yarra River just up from south wharf DFO and behind the Melbourne Convention Centre. A nice setting looking out over the River or if your seated in the back courtyard it's also a nice atmosphere. They ticked all the boxes for covid regulations and we found our seat in the courtyard. It was a nice sunny day so opted for some shade. The menu and payment system was all via QR code attached to our table which made it contact free and easy. We ordered and the drinks arrived promptly and the food was only ten minutes after. The staff were very nice and asked several times is we need anything else and if we're happy with our food and drinks. The food was pretty good the oyster were fresh and the burger ticked all the boxes as I was hungry. The kids has simple meals but we're happy with theirs also. Over all a good location good service good food and a pleasant experience and would be a great place for casual dinner and drinks with friends. read more

Very poor experience. Ordering from a QR code is fine, however being asked to pay for a tip before being served anything is not. Especially when there is a 10% surcharge on a Sunday and when you wait for over 40 minutes for your food (which comes out to everyone separately). Wine by the bottle is completely 'sold out'. Order by the glass for extra restaurant to the owner revenue. My burger patty was completely raw. At least the manager promptly refunded me. This place needs to rethink its customer experience and food hygiene Melbourne has a lot to offer, despite the ideal location on the Yarra, you're probably better to find somewhere else to dine. read more

We stumbled upon this place when our original destination was to far away. Besides the location is perfect for river watching, mellowing out. Two of us ordered the BBQ Brisket ($27 AUD) and the Pork Belly Bites ($15 AUD) to share. The 2 fairly thick slices of brisket had a side of corn and kohlrabi slaw tossed on top of dutch cream potato hash. DELISH! The pork belly bites were shockingly delish also. For once, I hadn't checked the YELP reviews and things worked out anyway. The sides were new to us and that worked out also. I stumbled on The Boatbuilders Yard on the way to South Wharf DFO when I was recently in Melbourne - it is the first of a selection of restaurants in this prime and now thriving fairly new location in Melbourne! I initially walked past it but then looking at the seating options decided to go back and try breakfast here. I am very happy I did. There are so many seating options here, there are cute deckchairs out the front overlooking the yard, inside seating, and an outdoor court yard area (which appears to allow your furry friends as well - tick of me). Service was excellent, I was offered coffee, the paper and then breakfast! The staff were friendly and accommodating. Breakfast took some time to come, but it was busy and there were some tables! My coffee came quickly which is the main thing! As usual I ordered the baked eggs, and I am starting to wonder if there is a bad version of this anywhere in Melbourne! Different to the others I had whilst over there but they were probably the best ones I ate. Full of flavor, steaming hot and served with a delicious tasting bread! I noticed a few little additions which I quite liked at this place, at the door there is a bucket of umbrellas saying if it's raining you can borrow an umbrella and bring it back some other time! Cool ... This area of Melbourne for me is certainly an untouched hidden gem and when I return I will bring some friends to this area and The Boatbuilders Yard for a night out! I imagine it is as lovely as it is at night as it was on a sleepy sunny Melbourne morning. It is also not too far of a walk through to Etihad if you are going to the footy and looking for somewhere for a pre-Footy meal fix. read more

The Boatbuilders Yard is situated, funnily enough, in the old boatbuilders yard just outside of the Melbourne Convention Centre. Therefore it is right next to the river and is an absolutely fantastic location. This is the ideal place to go for a few beverages on a sunny afternoon or a warm evening. The other plus to this place is how roomy it is. There is ample seating, in the form of nice wooden benches, spread over a large area - which only adds to ones sense of breezy lightheartedness when you sit at this bar. There will be no crowding in like sardines here. The other thing I like about this place, is the fact that they have a menu of barbecued food. There really is something comforting about sitting in the sun, drinking beers and smelling the smokey smell of snags frying on the barbie. They also have a pricier (but actually quite cheap) breakfast, dinner and lunch menu of Modern European cuisine, if you want something a little more civilized than barbecue. My only criticism of this place is the fact that they, like every other bar on the riverside, seem to have added the usual 'river tax' (apologies for Tony Abbot-like commentary) onto their drinks menu. At an average of $12 a pint the drinks here are not cheap. read more

The south end of the river has been in dire need of a good bar for some time now, so I was delighted to hear of this Riverland-on-steroids addition on the bank near Polly Woodside. When you get down to it, Boatbuilders isn't that different from Riverland at all. The same small open-ish indoor space with a focus on the outdoor decking area, the same sausage sizzle and the same hideously overpriced drinks! I paid $53 for four pints of cider. OUCH. My friends and I have dubbed Riverlands 'Ripofflands', so we need an equally accurate name for the Boatbuilders Yard. So far the best I've come up with is 'Purserapers Yard', but that isn't very P.C. We actually realized after a few rounds of beer and cider that wine is the way to go here as it's far more reasonably priced, and the selection is decent. Just don't expect the staff to have any clue about whether a given bottle is dry or woody - although much faster than Riverlands, the service here isn't as polished. Despite the beating my bank balance took, I will most likely return to the Boatbuilders - it's so spacious there's almost a guarantee you'll get a table, and nothing beats sitting on the water having a drink with friends on a warm Friday evening. read more

Ideal for an after work drink event, this venue has added some life to the south wharf precinct. It's a great location on the river with a variety of seating options inside and outdoors. Great on a sunny evening. People tend to be in a relaxed mood here and it's a good place for groups to strike up conversations with other small groups of people. Very social indeed. One of my favourite places during the daylight savings months. You can while away a warm summers evening with a great range of bourtique beers and ciders and a large selection of wines. The stuff are knowledgable about all the beverages and can recommend something to your likely. The food is generous and, now that they have the bugs worked out, they have a clever system of buzzers which bring the food directly to your table. During winter this place also has a number of open fires and fireplaces, plus plenty of heaters to keep you warm. Finally, they will often show major sporting events on large screens so if sports is your thing come along and settle in for a viewing session. read more

Checked into the Hilton and was starving for a bite to eat. This place was nice and close to the hotel and it was a beautiful warm sunny day to sit out on the deck and enjoy a delicious meal. You order and pay at the bar and they give you a tracking pager and bring your food when it's ready. Ordered the super salad which was a tasty combo of quinoa, kale, pumpkin, almonds, poached chicken, all in a delicious light dressing. Hit the spot after 2 days of airline food. The Boat Builders Yard is located on a dream stretch of Melbourne chic happening and as such draws large crowds to its doors. It boasts an array of food and beverages that threaten to overwhelm the senses. Technology is king here with ordering and service delivery tied to digital streams that promise all but in our case left us with nothing for thirty minutes until a passing waiter (real person type) noticed our plight. Alright so I only drank beers here, but as far as a great outdoor space with tons of seating that *also* has beers near the convention center, you're really not going to do much better than this. The bartenders are super friendly, and even when the place is super busy at night it seems like they've got adequate staffing to really never have you waiting too long. It seems like it's a worldwide universal constant that the bars closest to convention centers are always terrible, because they can be. If you're looking for a beer, you just go where's close. It doesn't matter if it's expensive, there's nowhere to sit, etc... So for Boatbuilders Yard to actually be pretty outstanding was real surprising. The crowd was super friendly, both people were there for the conference as well as locals who were there because they loved the place (a good sign). Overall just a really great place, no complaints at all. read more

Decent place, great atmosphere and well designed. Boatbuilders is a large establishment. It has plenty of outdoor & indoor seating. Drinks are normally well priced. However I think these guys lack putting on a good happy hour, I believe there is only happy hour on friday, so the friday evening crowd is always busy. Surprised the reviews for this place isn't better. For being within 50 steps of the convention center this is the most fast delicious food I've had at any event. Prices are reasonable. Came here twice, the first time I had the lamb appetizer which were a bit fatty but dankilicious. The second time I grabbed dinner and got the chicken. Not sure if it's because I'm on Keto or because it was super delicious but it was incredible. This is a fun outdoor atmosphere, night time gets a bit chili but I have a feeling that's just Melbourne. You order at the bar and let them know what table you're at, pretty strange system for me but it seems to work out perfect for their guests. read more

Have walked past many times on our way to DFO. Will keep walking in the future. Had brunch on a Saturday morning. Interesting menu, but the food was bland and coffee ordinary. The eggs were an interesting combination of over cooked on the bottom and disturbingly raw on top. Service is odd, as it depends where you sit, if you get table service or not? 3 stars for location, and maybe ok just for a drink. read more

I've taken guests here for breakfast a couple of times now on the way to the DFO. Enjoyed the food and interesting breakfast selections. Breakfast nachos were very tasty, (cornbread, beans, tomatoes, guacamole with a poached egg & crispy nachos ) but a few more 'nachos' would be nice! read more

We had dinner here great view of the river. Best in front facing the yarra river. Delicious salmon dish and fiance enjoyed his burger too. Great service as well. Fun cool music that was a plus. This is a wonderfully located bar/restaurant situated right on the river. We stopped off for a couple of glasses of wine here, but haven't eaten here yet, so I can't review their food service. The wine list is expansive and expensive, but you'd expect that for such a place. We enjoyed the choice of music played, and the deckchairs outside were a nice touch. The walkway that separates this from the river itself is very busy, but not disruptive. I'd certainly go back when in this part of town. read more

Has a great food and drinks range that caters for everyone. Order food at the bar, then collect at the kitchen. I had the Barramundi which was delicious and just the right serving size. Humourless really. Ordered the fish and chips, arrived in a timely manner but was unimpressed with the flavour. Oily, bland and the accompanying chips were hard as an uncooked potato.
