Also, it's important to note that this location is about 200yards from a major railway crossing. This equates to high-decible train horns about every 15 minutes day and night. To top that off, the neighboring community (about 100 feet from the edge of the campground sites) have some enthusiastic roosters.

Everything around was closed so it was nice to see she had shampoo & conditioner and other things I needed I could purchase. She also has a little gift shop area where I purchased a great pair of sun glasses. They have an RV camp ground, motel, laundry, showers for campers & a shaded picnic area. There little rabbits hopping around in the grass. It was a really nice and enjoyable place to stay. I would recommend it

That's until the geniuses at Nebraska Game & Parks decide to install an ugly, noisy, multi-station "shooting range" in this once-beautiful park. Now, most times it's pleasant enough for visitors to want to find a little peace and quiet and enjoy some nature, you'll be treated instead to loud volleys of gunfire echoing through the the Wildcat Hills (including nearby public land parcels Buffalo Creek and Montz Ranch). The Nature Center was expanded at the same time as the "shooting complex" was installed, which is fortunate, since that is likely the only place you'll see much "nature" amidst the noise. The "shooting range" is only several hundred *feet* from the Nature Center, so have fun enjoying the "natural" noise as you take in the views. Big ugly berms now block views to the south from the park road...presumably to prevent stray gunfire from hitting vehicles. Thinking of enjoying some nice peaceful camping? The prevailing winds and sound-amplifying effects of the Hills means you'll be "enjoying" the gunfire from any of the park's designated camping areas. So put on some noise-canceling headphones, maybe with an app that plays some "natural" sounds, and enjoy your visit. Or keep driving and spend your tourist dollars on a place where the interests of a few (but very noisy) "shooters" don't outweigh those of the many.

This is one of…read moremy favorite places in Nebraska because of the pleasant campground nestled among the Ponderosas and the nice walking trails, with many scenic vistas of the surrounding forest and Sandhills. The fire lookout tower is often closed, but if you ask, they'll usually give you the key to climb it. There's also a nice pool in summer. Docked one star for the frequent trains nearby.

I discovered Lake Minatare State Recreation Area through the app on my phone called Campendium. I…read morewas looking for a place to sleep for the evening after spending most of the day touring Scotts Bluff National Monument. Well, Lake Minatare was more than suitable for resting for the night. To be exact...this rec area was located about 16 miles away from Scotts Bluff along some very very quiet roads within a bunch of cornfields. For me being a Florida person with palm trees everywhere...having these cornfields on my way to Lake Minatare was a refreshing change of pace. At the front entrance was an instruction board on how to choose a campsite and pay. It stated that half of their campsites are accepted through reservations...the other half is based on first come, first served. Well...lets just say Lake Minatare was extremely deserted when I visited back over the summertime. I paid $10 for a primitive campsite. That's all I needed...nothing more. They actually accepted checks so I wrote one out, placed it in an envelope provided and dropped it in a little deposit box. Then I held onto the receipt and hung it beside my campsite. That was all it took. Pretty standard for any campsite/campground. I will say...looking at Lake Minatare's website...they mentioned that shower facilities and water is offered at both the east and west portions of the campground. Yet when I was here...the primitive campsite section was simply some grass situated off to the side of the road. I only found a vault toilet to use. Maybe had I driven around and explored more...I would have uncovered these showers. Also featured here according to the website was 52 electric sites good for trailers and RV's with hookups along with an RV Dump and Fill Station. I guess I missed all this. Not like I would have used any of it...I just had my compact car with a tent...but the primitive campsite area where I stayed was in quite the remote section. That's all I can account for. Basically, in this primitive portion was myself and one other family. Otherwise there was nobody here. Each campsite had a picnic table if you felt like barbecuing...though there weren't any fire pits on the grounds...you had to supply your own grill. One unusual thing I noticed were these jumping grasshoppers situated all over the grounds. This was out of the ordinary and quite weird. When I assembled my tent...these jumping bugs kept hopping and hopping around. I had to keep the zippers to my tent cautiously closed at all times just in case these "jumpers" ventured inside my tent. It wasn't a big deal...but these insects were everywhere. Interestingly at all the other campgrounds I visited along my road trip, I never encountered such an issue like this. Oh well...they were annoying but for me being a casual person, I got over this matter pretty quickly. Once I set up my tent...I leisurely hung out and took it easy. There wasn't much to do here. I did have the slightest of cell phone receptions. I have AT&T and was getting like 1 bar. So, although connection was slow...at least I had something. One thing before I went inside my tent to sleep for the evening...I appreciated having a moment to look up at the sky and appreciate a summer sunset. The next morning I woke up early and was ready to continue on my journey. Overall, Lake Minatare Recreation Area served it's purpose. I needed a simple place to sleep for the night...and that's what I got here. Yeah it would have been nice to have a few more amenities around like a shower and bathrooms, but for $10 for the night...I had no complaints.

If you like camping with minimal facilities, this may be the place for you. Our campsite was listed…read moreas "electric plus." That meant we had electricity and nothing else. Water to fill our tanks was only available at the park office. When we arrived the showers and toilets were out of service. The toilets came into service the second day. Handicapped stalls were not in compliance with ADA regulations. Toilet height was less than 13 inches from the floor, although there were handrails. Showers were available at the handicapped restroom about a quarter of a mile from our site. The positives were cost ($30 per night), the river feeding the lake was about fifty feet behind our site. Largest cottonwood forest/grove I have ever seen. Vey quiet and pleasant otherwise.
