I went to see Kirk at Riversports last February when I decided it was time to stop renting and buy a kayak.

We…read morereserved a 22' pontoon boat approximately two months in advance for eight of us to enjoy a day on the water. The marina told me at the time that their boats will safely transport 10 people and have 100hp motors on them. I was pleased with the price and the deal (initially) on the phone. We arrived on March 29th, 2018 with 10 people (I decided to take my two grandkids with the original eight passengers). The pontoon boat they gave us was heavily damaged (see pics), only had a 50hp Honda motor on it (nowhere near enough horsepower to push a 22' pontoon boat carrying 10 people with coolers and gear), had no VHF radio (clear violation of US Coast Guard regulations), had no working 12 volt power to at least recharge a cell phone with a cigarette lighter adapter, had no anchor or working swim ladder, and upon firing up of the engine exhibited an incredibly loud whine from the prop bearing (to which the mechanic told me was normal noise for a Honda outboard). I've been captaining boats for 25+ years and I always take responsibility for passengers onboard my boats or any boat I rent. I complained about the condition of the boat and asked if we be assigned to a working vessel. The marina's reply was "no, but you are more than willing to call other marinas and try to rent their boat." I was shocked at Riverhaven's complete disregard for their customers' safety and their "couldn't care less" attitude. My passengers decided that we'd give the boat a try after driving 1.5 hours to Homosassa to try and have a relaxing day. We launched the boat and didn't get more than a quarter mile away before I noticed that the fuel gauge dropped from full to empty. I immediately turned the pontoon boat around and headed back to the marina figuring they just forgot to fill up the gas tank. Their response was "that gas gauge hasn't worked in years...but there is enough gas in it to get you where you want to go." I was fuming at this point, but tried to make the best of the day. The boat was extremely slow trying to push 10 people (max speed of 9 knots) with a 50hp motor but it lasted all day. Upon returning the boat there is a spot on the Homosassa River where spectators eat lunch at several locations. I was more than happy to display the Riverhaven logo as I slowly maneuvered the boat through the no wake zone with the engine whining so loudly that no one in their right mind could enjoy their lunch. I wanted everyone to know which marina NOT to rent from. We will NEVER rent from this marina again and we've informed the US Coast Guard of the numerous violations that the marina overlooks.

It has a very 'old Florida' vibe with direct access to the river with lots of amenities to use on it. However there were a few items that were advertised but not available but it did not really bother us. Check in was quick and efficient. We were given our own spot. NOTE: use the supplied cone to hold your spot when you leave or else someone will take your spot. The Monkey bar was pretty popular and parking is scarce when it gets crowded. We had an upstairs room with a great view of the river. 2 rooms with lots of space and full size appliances. TVs in both rooms, satellite and WIFI was great! Fastest WIFI I have seen in a secluded place like this. Shower had good pressure and lots of hot water. The shower had the weird faucet 'switch' to get the shower going. Seems to be something they like in these parts. Just pull down on the end of the faucet to close it and start the shower. The resort is in walking distance to many bars and restaurants. We went to the Monkey bar every night just to chill in the open by the water. There is a water taxi to take you over to Crumps if you want. We didn't use it but it was available. We did use the pontoon boats that were available to guests for a fee. $100 for 4 hours was not bad at all. However we got rained on and were only out 2 so they guy working at the desk let us have it for free! Great customer care here! Overall our stay was great. If you have a boat this place is perfect as a launch point to explore the river. A very relaxing get away very close to both nature and nightlife. We will be back.

A day out on the water with this outfitter has always been super fun regardless of the number of scallops caught. My group has gone out with a few different captains, all of which have been knowledgeable & safe. The booking process is pretty easy. I always book online - you can even sign the waiver through their website so there is no paperwork to take care of when you arrive at the dock. The boats are comfortable for the short ride out to the scalloping site and we always bring along a well stocked cooler of drinks and snacks to enjoy during our trip. All the snorkel equipment needed to dive for scallops is included in the tour. In general, the equipment is nice and well maintained. The conditions have been a little different every year I have gone - sometimes we catch a lot, sometimes a little. The captain has always dived with us to help search for scallops and moves to new locations as necessary. Cleaning the scallops after returning to the docks has always been easy - sometimes there is a group of high school students who will clean them for you for a fee. If they aren't around, there is a station to clean them yourself, and the captain has always been around to help / walk us through the best process. We will be back again!

Basically has a lot of options to explore the area. You can take an 4 hour tour or two hour tour on kayak. If you really explore in one day use the motor boat is better. The rivers are wide and not much of cover. Sunny day will have big sun on you body, sun cream protection is recommended. The kayak trail have 4 different rout. We choose the homosassa spring head route. They need to improve on facilities. Such as changes clothes area when wet, better rest room facilities instead of potable station, better educate the people who rent the kayak and give details tours recommendations and direction. One thing for sure is they are nice to meet with us. We went to the spring head trail. And we did not know we need to get under the small bridge then further down. Nice to have proximity map. But better instruction to get there is equally importance. We also miss the tunnel river. We found out this point of interest when we get back docking.

We started at the River Ventures Dive Center at 6:30AM, where we were offered coffee, tea, hot cocoa and snacks, and spent the next bit with an educational video and a wetsuit fitting. From there, we took a bus to the dock, in the most gorgeous sunrise light. let by our Guide Nat. Captain Emerson met us at the covered, heated pontoon, and our group set off through the water, for the protected manatee zone. The water was FULL of our sweet sea potatoes... in fact, it was difficult to even get off the boat because our new friends swam right up to the ladder. Nat had given excellent instructions. We immediately leaned into our pool noodles and gently followed her lead through the water. It took just moments before manatees were all around us. We stayed calm and quiet, and they either continued snoozing, or swam up to investigate us. Nat was on point with the camera, and with showing us things like the tarpon and sheepshead fish, and she was also shared little details about the manatees as we floated. Of course, with nature, there are no guarantees, and I really had no idea what to expect, but I was absolutely delighted by the interactions we had. The cold snap absolutely played into our favor, and I am so glad we showed up with our adventurous spirit. When we returned to the boat, there were more snacks, as well as hot cocoa, coffee, tea, and a variety of drinks in the cooler (water, beer, wine, soda, and white claws). We were so grateful for the boat covering and heater as we made our way back to the dock, and we had great chats with Nat, Emerson, and the other group on our tour. Was it cold? Sure. But the water felt great at 72ºF, and our wetsuits did a wonderful job of protecting us and keeping us buoyant. Our experience was incredible, from booking, to engaging with the staff with any questions we had, to the actual tour itself. The photos and videos were absolutely phenomenal, as well, and we were happy to purchase the package, as well as some gifts from the souvenir shop. We will be back for more manatee viewing, or to try one of their other tours. Thank you so much for the best day!
