That was a direct quote by the tour guide. There were a few windows overlooking the sea that were used to resist a possible attack by the sea. I admit, the outlook was spectacular. Especially seeing the breathtaking views of the sea surrounding Villefranche-sur-Mer. What surprised me most during this tour was their gardens. The surroundings are definitely seen in better days, but the garden is beautifully tended. As you make your way up there, I urge you to wear comfortable shoes. The roads are uneven at times and one lady complained she nearly sprained her ankle.

It is located on the elevated old city walled part of town (or really country), you really can't miss it since coming up the pedestrian walkway this imposing, regal building sprawls across the north side of a large cobblestone square. During certain times of the year (end March to mid-October) it's open to tourists for tours, but the months are fairly limited since it's very much the living and working quarters of the Monaco monarchy. Appears there are beautiful frescoes and grand staterooms you can view inside. If you happen to be there during those months tickets are €6 for adults and €3 for children, with combo tickets possible if you want to visit both the palace and the prince's royal car collection (€17 and €8 respectively, I guess someone has to pay for the upkeep of those cars and that's the tourists). Otherwise for the rest of the year you can catch a glimpse of the daily changing on the guard in front of the palace at noon. Nice views of Monte Carlo and the harbor along the old city walls by the palace.

Everyone said we had to go to the top of Castle Hill to watch the sunset, but the weather didn't…read morecooperate. I went the next day in the afternoon instead. You can climb several hundred stairs or take the lift. I went with the lift because it was scorching hot and I'd been walking forever. The panoramic views of Nice and the port are amazing. Definitely worth a visit. There's also a waterfall and other things to explore up there, but I mostly just enjoyed the view and headed back because of the heat.

We were told that when we come back at 2pm, we would get 10 Euros back in casino credit. Sadly that was not the case. We also opened a players card (loyalty card) in the next door's small casino and found out as a member, there was NO fee to enter.... Either way, happy for the overall visit. Won gambling! It's a marble statue of nude Apollo, the Greek god of the sun. Apollo is surrounded by planets. It was controversial in the beginning because of its nudity so, it was taken down a few years later. Only to be put up again in 2011 and people got over the nudity - this is not the only nude statue in the world. It's a popular photo spot and meeting place. Because it's a fountain in direct sunlight and no shade, you probably won't want to hang out here in the summer or when it's pouring.
