Thank you to everyone in the community who has done their part to maintain this jewel over the years. The theater boasts a grand lobby with lots of space for concession and merch lines. There doesn't seem to be the bottleneck one often sees at older venues such as this. The seats are spacious and comfortable in the auditorium, and there doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the house in terms of sight lines and visibility. The balcony doesn't hang so far over the main level that folks in the back feel claustrophobic. I've sat in multiple locations on this level and was pleased with each of my seats. The stage is mid-sized, however, it's beautifully framed by golden architectural detail that helps it seem far more grand. And the acoustics are such that sound travels nicely throughout the auditorium. Visitors can make use of street parking throughout downtown, with free parking after 6 PM. There are also several large, paid parking lots in the vicinity as well.

My daughter has been going to CDT for the past two years. She started out doing one ballet class a…read moreweek, and at the time, I expected her to be the kid at the recital that either refused to go on stage, or freak out when she realized she was on stage. I was blown away at the confidence and skills she has learned at CDT. She then added Jazz and Hip Hop the next season, and now the whole repertoire. The change dance has made in her life has been formative, and I credit Zoe and her staff with creating an environment that is clearly nurturing and supportive. The older dancers are positive role models and cheer on the younger ones during their recitals. Expectations to parents are clearly communicated. Each recital is well organized and executed (with help and thanks to parent volunteers). Best of all, my daughter looks forward to every class.

This group is passable as amateur symphonies go. As you would expect, the strings run into…read moretechnical problems with difficult pieces, and overall they're not tight: the sections seem oblivious of each other at times. Most of the principals are very good, and the conductor does a nice job. At intermission, there are no refreshments available free or for purchase. Other community orchestras enlist local high school groups to sell refreshments as a fundraiser, which is nice, but the Salem Phil has nothing. The audience is sparse, which is not surprising: they put on performances on both Friday and Saturday nights (a mistake) and tickets are pricey for the quality of the performance. And my understanding is that the players are not only unpaid, they don't even get free tickets to share with family members (which helps explain why the audience is so small) and the Board doesn't even honor them with an annual thank-you dinner (all standard stuff with amateur groups). I'm sure that they would attract better musicians if they treated their players better.

Tegan takes Covid precautions seriously which I also appreciate, having a daughter with a serious medical condition.
