It was so bright and hot that I stayed in much of the time or sat under dappled shade. It's an interesting place, and one of the best places I know for short walks where there is a lake with Canada geese and their goslings, and a trail that goes back to the edge of the park property. There is a pueblo ruin right on the property. It's quite a hike from my campsite but I enjoyed it. The camp hostess claimed there was hot water in the shower house and that it went on "in demand." She said you had to run it a few minutes before it would get hot. Uh-huh. I ran it for 10 minutes the night before and it stayed stone cold.

This is a mere 10 miles north of the Oklahoma-Kansas border on the rolling plains. It's stunning…read morecountry, and as you drive north you begin to cross small creeks and rivers. Even on the Oklahoma side there are some historical markers. The Santa Fe Trail is not far from here. The park is a marvelous oasis with a small man-made lake and surrounded with huge cottonwood trees. There are lots of juniper. This pears as a large slash of green against the rolling grassy plains. There are campsites pretty much all around the lake. The campsite I stayed at the first night, Cottonwood, was pleasant enough but very "public" in in full view of a very busy camp road. It was terribly crowded Sunday and there was back and forth traffic pretty much until 11 PM. I only saw law enforcement once. They stopped at a site near mine (Cottonwood #1) and spent a long time talking to some people in a small and very old trailer. It looked like they were living there semi-permanently with a huge woodpile, BBQ, etc. The truck belonging to the site was on its last legs. They (a couple?) seemed to be slowly patrolling by my camper van again and again, looking closely. Since I was the only other van in the campground I started locking my travel-all. I don't usually do that. There were enough large family groups in run down trailers and trucks, that I thought some casual theft wasn't out of the question. I couldn't figure out where all of the muscle cars with their loud music were coming from. Meade is the next nearest town and it's a good 10 miles north. Well, this is the place to cruise on a pretty day, it seems. There were just lots of cars and trucks, cruising around. On Monday it was much quieter. You can really see what an oasis this is. I moved to Cedar #2. I had no trouble, as the park is only 10% occupied now. A pair of flickers is cavorting above my head in the trees. Site #2 has great shade. All I have to do is turn around and see the lake. There are lots of playgrounds and cool, green places for people to walk to. It's a fishing lake, so no powerboats. It's quiet because of that. The bathroom and shower house that serves the whole park apparently is rudimentary at best. There are two shower stalls for women with no curtains. It is all open air. Just like girl scout camp you can see trees and sky when you shower. The water is warm and you can choose only one temp. There is no door into the shower house/bathroom itself. You just jog to the right of a brick wall and there you are. ZERO privacy.

From Elkhart you have to take 27 N for several miles, then a right onto FS 700, which has a marker. Then you have to drive about 4 miles on a dirt road, the campground will be on your left. What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Kansas? Probably fields, wide-open sky, and windmills. This place delivers on all of them in a big way - you'll see what I mean. The campsites are very-well marked and each has a fire ring, garbage can, and picnic table. There is a pit toilet and potable water as well. When I stayed the fee was $7 and the whole campground was empty and serene. Bullfrogs croaked in the nearby pond and the only other sounds were from crickets and birds and a few coyotes as the sun set. It was relaxing, scenic, and quiet. To the right (east) of the campground there is a day-use picnic area with gazebos and BBQ grills. The campground seems underused, there were a few stray beer bottles which I took to mean people like to just hang out there and drink, but I didn't see anyone else so can't confirm. This is one of my favorite campgrounds, and I'm hoping for a day when I can return.

At first it's flat land on a dirt road but once you get to the park it is beautiful. The campground offers sites for tents and hookups. To camp it was $5 for the night and to get electric it was $15. Tent sites also include water spickets. Campground has picnic tables and also has a large covered area with tables. Camp host is super nice ans very helpful. Also has a bath house. Very clean and well kept grounds. Also has two nature trails. Pets are welcome but must be kept on leash. Wildlife is included. Woke up this morning to see a turkey. Can't wait to go back!!!!

It's a parking lot. There are some RVs that are on grass sites, but they are all very old and the place is just gross--not maintained. The one thing it has going for it is that it's close to the downtown area, but I think that could be said for just about any place in this small town. Definitely go to the Boot Hill Museum if you're in the area.

She kept saying it isn't her fault that there isn't any water in the lake. And that the website does say that the lake is empty. When we asked for a refund, she said that is not going to happen because all of the fee's are nonrefundable. Basically if you don't mind being lied to and like poor to no customer service...Then this IS the place for you. Heed my warning, this place is horrible.
