I did a sponsored Abseil for the RNIB Sunshine House many years ago. After raising just over £100, I realised that I knew nothing about the House - considering it was so local.
I phoned them up and they were so kind and polite, and invited me up for a chance to have a look around.
The School is set in lovely surroundings, and the school house building is pleasing on the eye. The children have plenty of room to play both inside and out, and the facilities were fantastic.
I dont pretend to know exactly what I was seeing equipment-wise, etc - but the lady who showed me round explained everything very well. I particularly remember a 'light room' which was a little dark room kitted out with LED glow lights and fibre optic lights, things like that. The idea was that some of the children who werent completely blind, but who had very poor eyesight could still see the beauty of the different coloured lights and got to experience the sensation of something different and more intense to what they would normally see. There was a little girl playing in there at the time, and the smile on her face was well worth the nerves I felt on the day of the abseil.
It is nice to know there are places like this around, and that there are people willing to help make a difference. A humbling experieince. read more
