My 2nd update on this TV station, but fairness compels me to raise the rating by at least one star…read more One morning as I waited for my coffee to brew, and I flipped channels looking for a relevant news item to focus on, I passed by Channel 19, WRNN. At that time of the morning, in that state of grogginess and (usually) ill temper, I don't linger long, but on this particular morning, I lingered a bit. Instead of Emeril hawking cook-ware, or the Beverly Hills reality-TV plastic surgeon hawking whatever it is he's hawking, the channel was featuring radio-talk show host Thom Hartmann (as an aside...who spells "Tom" "Thom?" I've had friends named "Thomas" and...when shortened...they spelled it "Tom." My original birth name was "Thomas Francis." Had I kept the name, I can assure you I would have spelled its shortened version as "Tom," not "Thom." But I digress...) Basically, what I saw was Hartmann sitting in what appeared to be a studio, talking into a microphone, but looking into the camera. Nobody calling in with a question. No guest. No panel discussion. Just Hartmann talking. And talking. And talking... Now, politically, I would call myself "liberal," or "progressive," but...as I've become older...I like to think I'm less doctrinaire about it. (When I was a teenager, my conservative father despaired that I was one step away from being a Communist.) In my old age, I'm less Vladimir Lenin, more Gus Hall. For instance, I'm still against the death penalty, but I'm not as passionately against it as I once was. (When I was 12 and read "In Cold Blood," I thought, "Jeepers, if they had only let Perry Smith play the guitar and write poetry like he wanted, he never would have killed off that entire family in Kansas!" Now...as an adult, with a hopefully more realistic and measured view of the world...I see him for the monster he actually was. A tortured, sick monster, maybe, but still a monster.) My youthful bleeding heart has hardened, at least somewhat. What is the point of me stepping up onto my soapbox and bloviating on about nothing that has anything to do with WRNN? Well, I like Hartmann, and I still, despite my hardened heart, tend to agree with his politics (I think history teaches that anything worthwhile that was accomplished in the course of America's history was accomplished by progressives, but...again...I digress), but I'm really not interested in watching someone talk...and talk...and talk... Maybe Malcolm X, or Martin Luther King. But not Thom Hartmann. I can't say I'd rather watch paint dry, but I can say that after about 15 seconds, I'll flip channels looking for that "Twilight Zone" repeat until the coffee is finally, mercifully, brewed. I was always like that. When I was a toddler (I don't remember the incident but my chagrined parents later told me about it), I was in Sunday School, and got up in the middle of the teacher's droning-on lecture and started walking out. The teacher asked, "Mr. T_______, where do you think you're going?" "I'm leaving. I'm sick of this Jesus business!" At that tender age, I don't think I meant anything blasphemous: I just preferred watching cartoons, to hearing about how sinful, and bad, and doomed I was... In grade school, I spent more time looking out the window at Ratzer Road traffic than I did at the blackboard, where the teacher was trying to explain with intense monotony the particulars of a subject that I had zero interest in, much less comprehension of. I had learned at least one lesson from Sunday School. I didn't try to walk out. But I wasn't paying attention either. And so it goes. I'll listen to Noam Chomsky, or the late Alan Watts, on CD. But after an hour (preferably less), it's time to move on. On another morning, while flipping channels, I saw Richard French...Richard!...giving what appeared to be a guest editorial on the show. As mentioned in the initial review, I love Richard, but not at that hour of the morning. Not before I've got that jolt of caffeine surging through my veins. And if he's only on for 2 minutes once or twice a week, I'm not really interested. I liked the panel discussions French used to moderate. You need someone (hopefully more than 1 someone) to bounce ideas and thoughts off of, someone intelligent and informed but maybe with a different viewpoint. If I want an editorial, I'll go to the NY Times. So...I'm not sure what's going on precisely at the station, but a show with Hartmann that occasionally features guest editorialists like French is certainly preferable to the 90% of shite that makes up the rest of the viewing day (and night) at WRNN. But in all likelihood, I won't be watching, or listening. Still, the fact that they're featuring Hartmann, and occasional editorials by Richard French, and not someone execrable like reactionary-bartender-out-of-his-depth Sean Hannity or the nauseating racist Tucker Carlson, has to merit at least another star for that alone, if for nothing else.

So easy to get to from Manhattan…read more Less than an hour by metro north railroad. Plenty to see, do, eat and drink. Nice and affordable hotels in the area. Good spot for a quick weekend getaway. Historic mansion tours, night time lantern lit graveyard tours, summer time street festivals, and more. Hit main street and take in a show at Tarrytown Music Hall, dine alfresco at Lefteris Gyro for tasty Greek eats, grab an artistic cappuccino at Coffee Labs Roasters and listen to live music on weekends, grab an ice cream cone at Main Street Sweets, pop in at a local bar for a cocktail, or just walk around and peruse the boutique shops and purchase a few unique items. Of course Sleepy Hollow if famous for it's Halloween season events and Great Jack O'Lantern pumpkin blaze. The town hosts the annual Sleepy Hollow Half Marathon that I ran in a few weeks ago. If you're a runner this is one of the tougher courses with many hills and inclines. It will definitely test your mettle. Also, the Captain Lawrence Brewery is only a few minutes away by cab or Lyft car. Terrific spot to try a bunch of brews and play some cornhole in the back beer garden.

Their inadequacies were atrocious. The audio would cut in and out at every stage of every race. The video would pixelate making each stage completely unwatchable. On the rare occasions when the audio was fine, the video streamed in standard definition. Before anyone starts getting some exercise by jumping to a lot of conclusions, our cable provider with our home network achieves DL speeds in excess of 72mbs. I also stream Netflix in 4K as well as Hulu and Sling with no issues whatsoever. I emailed NBC Sports customer service after each stage to let them know about the horrendous service. "We are working diligently to fix the problem...". They never fixed it. I asked for a refund numerous times and it was refused. I sent letters to the Better Business Bureau and also sent letters to NBC Headquarters. All of my correspondence was ignored. Fast forward to June 15, 2018 and these jokers are reaching out to me to re-subscribe. I guess they don't have any problems communicating when they want more money. Unbelievable. BUYER BEWARE!!!!! If you're a cyclist like I am or a fan of the Grand Tours, stream them elsewhere *except* for NBC Sports.
