Me and my wife recently went on a trail on Thanksgiving day to go to Roan Mountain. I personally don't know if at any other day of the week that if you have to pay to go up the mountain or to visit the park. We were able to see the Scenic Overlook and the trail was well detailed regardless of all the leaves on the ground. We were able to follow our way using the color-coded signs on the tree. Even on thanksgiving, I give this place props for keeping the restrooms open and they had a game room that was open as well which is really cool. Stuff like that I think it's really accommodating and pretty cool. There's a lot to Roan Mountain State Park that I have yet to explore still. Went during the off season on an impromptu cabin trip during the week for a peaceful, beautiful cabin stay!! The cabins do have a general parking lot and you cart your stuff in on a large cart staged by the info kiosk. I loved the setup, each woodsy cabin has a loft with extra sleep room and WiFi, which you'll need because there isn't much signal around the park. We hiked a couple trails, but it was pretty cold, so time by the woodstove was fun too! The area is beautiful, lots of historical areas nearby, and Ingles has all you'll need for a few days in a rustic cabin in the mountains! read more

This is one of those situations where the federal government has the big attractions and the state government kind of gets the leftovers, particularly given that the actual mountains cross state lines. Nonetheless, the streams flowing down the mountain are charming. The area included a historic farmhouse with a single horse that did not appear to be very sociable, a graveyard for the Appalachian pioneers of the area, and an overlook of what's to come if you keep heading up the mountain. The visitor center's restrooms were closed, and I'd hoped to stop in for a ranger event with snakes but that didn't happen for some reason, so I moved on, which wasn't a bad decision. But stopping in this area was free of charge and certainly worthwhile. read more

We camped here in the state park campground, two weeks ago, and overall it's very nice. Our visit was a bit early in the season for them, and the camp store/check-in station wasn't open, but like most state parks, it was no trouble to find our spot. Nice setting, we went for a walk most days and explored the group camp area that was lovely, as well as the uphill campground that was not yet open for the season. Saw lots of drive-through visits from Park Rangers - felt very safe. Of course, we wish it were full hook ups, but with state parks that's rarely the case. Lovely area that we enjoyed exploring, and since it is so far north and east, I'm not sure we will be back... But wouldn't mind staying here again if that happens. read more

We were in the area to hike around the Appalachian Trail at Carver's Gap. We were there for the weekend doing trail magic for the thru hikers on the trail. We hammock camped near the parking lot. There is a decent outhouse in the parking lot too. From Carver's Gap, it's about 1.5 miles south to Roan High Knob and there's a shelter there. We didn't hike that direction though. We hiked about 5-6 miles south to Overmountain Shelter which is an old barn with a great view of the valley. On the way there, we passed Round Bald, Jane Bald, and Grassy Ridge Bald. They all were very windy and had great views from the top. This is a great area for day hiking or weekend camping! read more

We were so lucky with not that many ppl and it was absolutely gorgeous! So peaceful and quiet just mountain trees birds. Not that much view because lot of trees but lets be happy for them. Roan Mountain State Park is a 2,000 acre state park at the foot of Roan Mountain. It has a 1908 farmstead, thirty cabins for rent, 86 RV campsites, picnic pavilions, an amphitheater, fishing on the Doe River, an overlook, and a museum/visitors center. The overlook can view the Blue Ridge Mountains. Annually, they have a Rhododendron Festival. Hiking trails include the Chestnut Ridge Trail (1.95 miles), the Cloudland Trail (.5 mile), the Forest Road Trail (2.75 miles), the Fred Behrend Trail (2.35 miles), the Moonshiners Run Trail (.95 mile), the Peg Leg Mine Trail (.35 mile), the Raven Rock Trail (1 mile), the Riverside Trail (.5 mile), the Tom Gray Trail (.4 mile), and the Turkey Trot Trail (.25 mile). We rented cabin 3 for a few nights and loved it! It was clean, comfortable, and cozy. There is seriously no phone service and no WiFi so enjoy being unplugged. Bring a book, games, and a puzzle. Beats any hotel in our opinion. read more

Absolutely my favorite place to hike while visiting my in-laws I would give it ten stars if I could.

TLDR: The hikes at Roan Mountain are moderately difficult but the views are worth the struggle. At numerous balds one can see blue mountains in nearly every direction. The hikers are a mix of day hikers and thru hikers on the Appalachian trail. I recommend taking AT to Overmountain shelter. read more

I just went there for my niece's wedding. It was on top of the mountain. Quite a hike it but worth it. The cabins we all stayed in were amazing. Very clean. The bathroom was nice. The beds were so comfortable. I liked how they had a full kitchen with all of the pans, dishes and other things you might need to cook. Only thing missing were a pair of scissors. I did find the door a bit hard to open. Going to and from the parking lot with all of our stuff was hard since it was a steep hill up. It made it harder after a long uphill hike for the ceremony. It is nice you don't have to pay to get in. The price of the cabin per night was totally worth it. The cabin I stayed in slept 6. The views are pretty. The trails are nice. The staff is great. I highly recommend it. read more

Let me start by saying that I NEVER stay in a campground where I have to pay. However, my aunt reserved two nights for me so I could take a break from my rock climbing trip and have a place to shower and have a good two rest days. I stayed in campsite 33 in my truck with a custom cabover camper. Because I designed and built my cabover, I designed it to be self sustaining for up to two weeks, and is not capable of being "hooked up" to any utilities. Keep in mind that 33 is NOT an RV site, but a "tent only" site. Before settling down for the night, I found a very friendly ranger and made sure it was ok that I parked there. He suggested a site with hookups, but after I explained my situation, he agreed that keeping my reservation in 33 would be best. The weather was less than friendly, and was perfect timing to not be climbing, as it rained one day and snowed all the next. Because of the weather, there were only four other people in the entire campground, and even the camp host left due to weather. Bathrooms were very clean (for a campground), and it was nice being able to have a hot shower. Also, it is a very close campground to find nearby hiking (which was incredible in the snow). People were too afraid to adventure outside, so it felt like I had the entire park to myself!! Overall, it seems like a great place for families during late spring and summer. The pool is nearby and alcohol is not allowed, so you will not get the rowdy groups. read more

Tony Vanoy, Noël Lori-Elizabeth Teel and I went to Roan Mountain State Park on Saturday January 9th, 2016 the day after my 52nd birthday. We went here to look around and check out the scenic views. The sites were gorgeous and the best park of the trip, the park was FREE. My goal is to see as much as I can see to fill out my bucket list and as cheap as possible. I would like to write a blog or book about what we have seen and what you can see if you wanted to. There is camping in this park along with great picnic areas with grills. I liked this campground a lot. We stayed in the end loop that has a bathroom up the hill. The only complaint I would have is there was a large street light right near the campground site we chose... Otherwise, the campground was very nice. It actually had the best WiFi we have ever experienced. Wifi is not a necessity, but is a real plus, when you are traveling by the seat of your pants. Meaning, you don't book things in advance, but just drive as long as you wish, and stay where you want at a couple hours notice. The campground and bathrooms are very clean. The slots are a little close together, but they are all under a canopy of large mature trees. You can see this particular campground at the end of the following video. Another great place for camping & hiking in TN! The campground is nice & offers more private campsites than a lot of places (which can be reserved online). The last time we camped there ours had a row of bushes completely surrounding the site - nice!! Hiking is great here. Beautiful mountain views. I believe it's the Chestnut Ridge Trail that I'm recalling in particular. The rhododendron festival in June is amazing (be prepared to sit in traffic a while though - go early!). read more

We love this park !!!! We hike in cool weather to avoid snakes , poison ivy , fleas and ticks. This was our first cold season of trying out this park. Wish winter would last a little longer so the dogs and I could enjoy a few more hikes here. The dogs love to get in the creeks/rivers after getting hot. We have been 4 times in a month and each time there was hardly anyone there. This park is very clean. Well maintained. Open bathrooms year round at pool and visitors center. The staff I have met ( 2 rangers and clerk at visitors center ) were all knowledgeable , helpful and friendly. They gave me great info about the different hiking options in the park. I do not enjoy the winding drive to park. Cant wait till next winter !!! read more

Very pretty area. I think the hiking trails are for more experienced hikers because there are very steep hills going up and down mtn and not very well maintained. Dangerous in many spots. The cabins are nice inside, open living room and dinning area which includes small wood burning stove instead of fireplace, master suite on main level and loft has two separate sleeping areas with beds. Cabin grounds area are monitored by park rangers. Curfew and noise level rules strictly enforced. read more

I attended a wedding here and am so very disappointed. To begin with, my mother tried to change the reservation to a smaller cabin because my whole family couldn't attend due to a last minute emergency (she called about 5-6 days before the event). They refused to cooperate, stating that any changes had to be made 10 days in advance. REALLY?!?! I guarantee had my family had our druthers, there never would have been an emergency and we all would have attended. I tried making a phone call from the cabin phone the night I checked in (as there is no cell service) to no avail. Dial 9 to get an outside line-not complicated. I could make not ONE all; After finally getting a Century Link operator and explaining the situation, I was told that long distance calls had been blocked. IS THAT SO?!?! Yes, by all means rent out your facility and don't let people make a PHONE CALL!!! People come from many different places when renting a facility for an event, not just locals. No cell service and no way to make phone calls? To top it off, the comforters are nasty. Really nasty. They smell like unwashed people. The sheets were only slightly less offensive. Absolutely disgusting. Can't they pretend they keep things clean? I'm tremendously disappointed and will never come back. read more

The park is beautiful. This was our first trip here. We stayed in the cabins. They are amazing!!! I have never stayed in a state park with cabins that included all linens and towels and a fully stocked kitchen gear. Thus was more like renting a house at a hotel price. We saw plenty of deer during our stay. There are so many rhododendron plants. I would love to visit in late june/July when they are in full bloom. We took 2 short easy hikes, the peg leg mine by the visitor center and the tom grey trail by the campground. read more

I'm specifically reviewing the Roan Mountain High Bluff Trail (part of the Appalachian Trail), which is 8 miles past the park on highway 143. It is accessible from the parking lot at Carver's Gap. This is a FANTASTIC trail--one of the most beautiful hikes I've ever taken. Since Roan is a bald mountain, the views are spectacular. Be sure to wear sunscreen as you won't be shaded by forests on this trail--don't worry you won't miss the shade. I'd call the trail easy in most places to moderate as you ascend to Roan High Knob. The mountain is home to some beautiful wildflowers including the rare Gray's Lily. Roan is also home to a herd of mohair goats that have been brought up to eat the invasive blackberry and preserve the bald grassland. Love, love, love it. read more

We first visited Roan Mountain while hiking the Appalachian trail. We feel in love with it here. There is just something about this mountain. We decided to return and stay in a cabin here for the weekend at the end of November. The cabins are so comfy and have wood pilled up to keep you warm by the fire. Highly recommend the cabins!! And of course a MUST is hiking to the bald's on Roan Mountain. The views were totally different from when we first hiked Roan in the summer. I warn you this- you will never want to leave!! read more

We stayed in one of the cabins. We arrived and checked in with two very kind women that were working, Paige and Teresa. They were very helpful with information about the area and even let me borrow some creamer when I was desperate for some coffee. Throughout our stay (5 days) both women and the conservation officer, Keifer, were very gracious answering our continued questions. Our cabin was comfortable and cozy. It held two families and the kids had a blast. A lot to do outdoors and a cozy fire inside on the rainy days. read more

Roan Mountain State Park is beautiful. It is by far one of my favorite places since moving here.

We hosted our wedding of roughly 100 people at Roan Mountain State Park. We live in Arizona (courtesy of Uncle Sam) but are originally from Atlanta and had been to the park multiple times before we decided to host our wedding here. We were hesitant to plan a wedding in the "middle of nowhere" (coming from some of our more 'city-bound' friends and family) but it was such an amazing experience and turned out even better than could have possibly been expected. There is not a single staff member that works in this park that doesn't have the nicest demeanor or friendliest attitude towards work, the grounds or visitors. The ladies at the front desk Vicki and Teresa, were unbelievably nice and accommodating through the entire process of making reservations for cabins, extending reservations, all of our crazy friends and family coming in at all hours and leaving all at once. They always had an answer for everything, were incredibly thoughtful and any questions we (or our guests) had that couldn't be answered by them- they'd call a ranger and ask him for us! Tim and the entire maintenance staff did an amazing job at the venue itself! We held the wedding at The Miller Farmstead. They mowed the grounds the day before (in the freezing rain and fog!), and pulled out all of the picnic tables from the barn for us to use- a job that had originally been planned for myself and the groomsmen. They put out extra trash cans and bags, and came and emptied them that night after the wedding at 7PM!! Absolutely unbelievable service. The cabins were spotless (as usual) and perfect thanks to the housekeeping staff. I honestly can't say how awesome the cabins are. If you don't mind bringing your own food and doing your own cooking- stay here! The wood burning stoves are awesome and work great in the cooler nights (or the snowy winter). We had a groomsmen cabin and a bridesmaids cabin and then most of the rest of our guests rented out cabins for themselves. Every ranger we met- even when we received a noise warning for after hours quiet time the night of the wedding- were all SUPER friendly. Nothing but nice, professional, courteous and knowledgeable rangers in the entire park. Things we can't say about some of the parks we've been to. Our biggest fear for the weekend was that some of our more tech savvy friends wouldn't have any access to cell service or internet and there are NO TV's! It was basically a giant social experiment going back to a time without all of this...and it was perfect! Everyone had a great time, some hiked and explored, some stayed in and hung out by the fire, some sat on the porch and drank coffee (or bourbon) and still others went into town for food! All in all if you're going to have a wedding here, go hike or camp, day trip, or are just curious- I can't say enough nice things about it. The atmosphere is fantastic and the people are even better.
