Ducks love this marsh and it is popular for nesting. While we were on the lake we saw ducks in the grasslands. It is a beautiful place to spend a few hours at. We didn't go far because it became very windy. They have a visitor center that you can visit. We were kayaking here and really think being on the water is the way to experience this lake. This lake has trout and bass which seem to be pretty large. If you want to visit a spacious and scenic part of Nevada then we highly recommend this refuge.

We missed Fort Ruby & the Narciss Boat Landing. At the Main Boat Landing there's bathrooms, boat ramp & maps/info on a kiosk. There were some fishermen in their boats. From the brochure: "located in the Great Basin of the West, Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a wetland oasis in NV's high desert. This remarkable refuge lies along the eastern flank of the scenic, snow-capped Ruby Mtns." There's lots of birds: We saw some American avocet, White-faced ibis, Coots, & Canvasback, many others couldn't ID. We didn't see mammals, reptiles, amphibians, or fish but they are there somewhere. We did a short auto tour to see the Marsh on a dirt road on our way to Harrison Pass Rd. Best time to see waterfowl & their young is from May-July. Nesting & migrating songbirds best observed during May-June. Sept-Oct can be up to 25,000 waterfowl & coots. Location: Ruby Lk Refuge is located in the south Ruby Valley, 65 mi SE of Elko & 100 miles NW of Ely in Northeastern NV.

Nestled deep in the heart of the Ruby Mountains, the Lamoille Canyon picnic area is a rugged gem…read morethat whispers serenity to those who listen. We arrived just after a group had packed up, and to our delight, the grounds were impressively clean--proof that some still honor the wilderness code. But as we wandered with our dogs, soaking in the alpine air and golden light filtering through the aspens, we spotted the occasional blemish: a forgotten sock here, a stray water bottle there. Remnants of carelessness that jarred against the canyon's quiet dignity. We didn't come to clean, but we couldn't leave it behind. Half a garbage bag later, we left the place better than we found it--because that's what stewards of the wild do. Still, it stings to see such beauty treated like a backdrop for convenience. Lamoille deserves reverence, not neglect. Despite that, the canyon remains breathtaking. Towering cliffs, whispering pines, and trails that beckon the soul to roam. We'll be back--next time, hopefully to simply enjoy, not to restore. Until then, may others tread lightly and leave no trace. In a quote from Chief Seattle, "We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children".

If you have ever wanted to be in two states at once this is your place! [West Wendover UT|NV]…read more The Utah|Nevada Stateline in West Wendover is pretty cool because despite the town being small and remote, each side of the States is a town with casinos (NV side), food and entertainment. Not much shopping here, though. You will not see a state welcome sign when crossing the stateline, the State names are painted on the street, with a line separating Nevada and Utah. It's kind of hard to see from the ground but you get a better view from inside the skybridge. Also, there is a one hour time zone difference, currently Utah is on MDT (Mountain Daylight Time). On the Nevada side are five casinos: Montego Bay, Peppermill, Rainbow, Red Garter and Wendover Nugget. In Utah are two annual events that occur at the Bonneville Salt Flats -- land speed racing at Bonneville Speedway during Speed Week and World of Speed. Other events at the salt flats besides auto racing are Salt Flats 100 (ultra marathon), Hellfire and the US Flight Archery Nationals Competition. There are also a handful of places to stay on the Utah side. Don't forget to visit and tour the Historic Wendover Airfield. Review #3508

Or just be cheeky and have one foot on either side? The Utah-Nevada state line has you covered. You'll find this non-descript marker in the road just outside of the Nugget and Montego Bay casinos (those are on the Nevada side, by the way). There's not much to see, but you can park at the casino and walk a few yards down to the road to check it out up close.
