In 1971, the school opened and was initially named Kildonan East Regional Secondary School. In 1987, the school was renamed to Kildonan East Collegiate.[2] When the school opened in September 1971, it had an enrolment of 651 students. It increased to 1600 students in 1979. In 2014, the schools second floor bathroom was deliberately set on fire causing approximately $500,000 in damages. In 2016, a former student was arrested after posting a video to YouTube threatening the school. In 2019, Kildonan East Collegiate created an Indigenous outdoor learning space that included a 20-foot teepee, a traditional learning circle and an Indigenous medicine garden. A ceremony to commemorate this the building of this learning place took place after it was built.

A very well run school. The school was granted last year with over $60000 worth of new books from…read moreindigo!!. The building has an elevator for students with physical limitaions. The large playground is very engaging for students of all abilities, which includes a new oodle swing which is suitable for people with physical limitations, and a new slide is on its way as their parent council raised funds to purchase last year. They also have raised garden beds that the students plant different plants in . The staff go above and beyond to engage their students by providing free after school clubs throughout the year. Champlain School teaches the 7 Grandfather teaching to all students and teach their students to be proud of their cultural backgrounds, and inclusive to all. They even hold community pot luck dinners about 2x a year. This school has a free breakfast program for all students who want breakfast, if the student is late they r welcome to have breakfast during morning recess. Students r also offered a fruit or vegetable snack every morning (courtesy of the Canadian Nutrition Council). Parents are welcomed into the school everyday where they could spend time in a staffed Parent room where there are resources available for them to access, or just to connect with other parents and have a cup of coffee. The parent room also offers different activities for parents with preschoolers who need some adult interaction, thats been a lifesaver for some Moms. Champlain students produce amazing work, some of which was recognized by the Canadian Rights Museum in Winnipeg! Awesome! The school is very secure with a 'buzz in' system and security cameras throughout, including outside. Keep up the good work Champlain!!

She is flourishing with the right support and absolutely loves school. There is a large, beautiful "outdoor classroom" with play structures and basically a lovely mini-forest to play in. It is in a lovely, quiet, safe neighbourhood. Enrollment is small, so the teachers and staff know all the kids and parents very well. Lots of field trips, enrichment opportunities and clubs for a variety of interests. I love that they use SeeSaw and Edsby to keep you up to date. Staff is always available and prompt to answer questions and concerns. I literally have nothing negative to say about this school. It is a gem! My only concern is that one day she will have to move on!

I was a student at Cecil Rhodes, starting in grade one (Miss Goulden)....in 1945...my father had…read moreattended before me when his family emigrated to Canada from Glasgow, about 1925. He had the same teacher when he started at CRS in grade 6. His younger brothers also went to CRS, with Roy leaving his name carved into the brick at the front door of the main school..between the door and the window of the principals office...the name was still there I about 1960... My teachers were as follows...grade 2, 3, ...Miss Hughes grade 4...Miss Cruikshank (that was the year Weston School and the wartime houses were built), our grade four class had 41 students. Grade 5...Mrs. McConnel Grade 6...Mrs, McDougal Grade 7...Mr. Martin Grade 8...Miss Shackle Grade 9...Mr. Leckie The year of the Red River flood, the basement washrooms in the 'big' school flooded...school was closed in early May. Tech Voc school opened about the year before our class graduated from grade nine. One of our classmates, walked to school at CRS from St James, across the prairie to Weston...because Weston was at that time on the western edge of the city, there was no protection from the cold winds...but she rarely missed a class.
