I have known Roberto since he was apprentice to Saul Fromkin who was the Master of Saxophone. Roberto is one of the most brilliant Technicians I have ever known. I live in Las Vegas and I would rather send my horn to him in NY before I take a chance on anyone else touching any of my horns. He is a Great Technician and a very honorable Gentleman. Wonderful place to visit in NYC for a sax player. Unfortunately the staircase is very narrow and the shop itself is on the second or third floor. Not accessible for handicapped people or those who are injured. Not comfortable for me as an overweight lady. I received lots of individual attention initially and then another customer came in. In the middle of my questions I was passed on to a different clerk. I couldn't get my questions answered appropriately because of that. That was disappointing to me. Good reeds, good mouthpieces and vintage saxes on display. Tons of saxophone players have been there. There are autographed photos all over the stairway walls. Worth going, but be careful on those steps. read more

I chose Roberto's as a place to have my horn fixed because, unlike many other repair places, they list prices on their website. My sense of them as straightforward and helpful continued throughout the experience I had with them, which was incredible. The staff are so friendly and kind - even when I didn't know what was wrong with my horn, they worked with me over multiple visits (making sure to fix my problem in the time frame that I needed) until my issue was all figured out and I was personally satisfied with my horn. They were patient, supportive, and positive throughout the process. To top off an amazing experience, they charged an extremely fair price. The people at Roberto's are genuine and they're instrument experts; you can trust them! PS: there is a machine that takes your temperature before entering, and staff wear masks. Yay! read more

Wonderful hidden gem. It's a walk up, so not at street level. But trust me, 1000% worth it.

I went in to help a friend purchase a mouthpiece for a very old instrument that was in working condition, which had just been verified as playable by a good musician. Roberto tried to up-sell an $850 complete overhaul of it, including replacing pads and tightening the mechanism, and kept doing what looked like pushing it around to loosen it. It felt like a car mechanic telling women, "m'am, you need a new carburetor and spark plugs, and that will be $5000." At most, it needs one or two of the pads replaced. I called a very experience Bway pit player right after and he said he does not recommend this place because of this kind of vibe. I'm hoping he didn't damage the clarinet. read more

If you are looking to get ripped-off and be forced to file Paypal transaction disputes, then this is the store for you. Seven days ago, I made a purchase, but they emailed days later stating they did not want to sell the "vintage item" for the price listed on their website (if the price was that good, someone would have bought it long ago) because they feel their price was too low (They had accepted the payment, forwarded an invoice and offered the item would be shipped via UPS). But now after seven days they have not even initiated a refund process or responded to the Paypal transaction complaint. If you're going to bait and switch, at least promptly refund the customer's money. If I had used a debit card to make this purchase, I could be in real trouble--that's the kind of operation this store is apparently running. read more

Buyer beware, they do not accept new mouthpiece returns. Don't make the same mistake I did and assume they have a reasonable return policy for actual musicians. Any musician would be out of their mind to order a new mouthpiece without trying it first. And their "no returns" policy must be posted right where you buy the mouthpiece, right? Wrong, it's in a nested folder on their website, somewhat hidden. I was a fool for ordering a new mouthpiece without scouring their website for their return policy and now I'm stuck because I don't like the mouthpiece. I figured any pro shop would have a reasonable policy. Oh well, I guess that's what eBay is for. But hopefully you won't make the same mistake I did because you're reading this review. I'll be buying from reasonable vendors from now on. You know, the ones that will accept a return on a perfect, undamaged mouthpiece that was played by a professional musician for 5 minutes. read more

Loved this place. Casey and Roberto were so patient with me. I'm a beginning alto sax player and was given a wealth of information. Very polite and knowledgeable. Almost 2 years ago I stopped into Robertos looking to buy a new Baritone saxophone. Very few places in the US have a selection of vintage or modern baris, and I was immediately blown away with the shops inventory. Roberto was incredibly knowledgeable and welcoming, letting my try out some of his horns for hours before even making a purchase. Never was I rushed or pressured into buying anything. They let me take my time testing out any sax on their wall, and was blown away with their incredible Mark VI room. The horn I ended up purchasing has held up perfectly, and plays like a dream after Roberto's own personal work on the instrument. Even to this day I am very please with my purchase and stop by the shop every time im in the city! read more

I visited RW on New Years Eve and at first I wasn't sure what to expect because the receptionist seemed a little wary or something at first but Roberto and Jeff were very welcoming and helpful. They allowed me to take my time testing out any horn I wanted to and even offered me a bottle of water and a fresh reed for my mouthpiece so I could really get the best assessment of the instruments. I didn't plan to buy that day but was so impressed by the quality and sound of the tenor saxes that I bought one on the spot. But what put me over the top to actually buy was the friendly customer service. If they had to tried to "sell" me on a horn or were in the least bit less than friendly I would have gone about my business and kept my money in my pocket for another store. I'll probably be back to get one of their alto saxes too. read more

Robertos provides the absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced. I visited the store seeking to buy a Selmer (Paris) tenor saxophone. I played several, and found what I thought would be an ideal instrument for a reasonable price. Talk about bait and switch. After I selected it and requested to buy it, I was told the listed price was too low, and that he could not sell it for that price. I was flabergasted. I requested to speak to the owner, but the owner supported the employee. The owner came out and told me the prices change very often because of demand for the used instruments and that they are not responsible for the listed prices. He said he would thrown in a mouthpiece for the extra cost. The store is very nice, but I don't know why they would bait and switch on price given I was going to buy the Mark VI i selected. I obviously will not go back to this store. I don't know how so many great players claim to endorse this place. read more

While visiting NYC I stopped by Robertos Wind to pick up some items for my sax and to check out the shop. It is located on the 3rd floor and don't let the outside street appearance fool you, it is clean, professional and somewhat sprawling. When I went in the shop I was greeted by Roberto himself who right away dropped what he was doing and came to assist. Even after informing him I was a novice tenor player he took nearly a half hour of his time to talk saxophones with me and to give me recommendations on what I should do with regards to servicing my vintage Buescher tenor - never pressing or hard selling. Regarding the selection of horns it appeared to me to be the largest collection of vintage and rare horns under one roof. If you are a saxophone enthusiast like me just seeing the collection is worth stopping by. All and all it was a great experience and I am strongly considering having them go over my tenor. I'm confident it will come back playing like new. I gave it a moderate price range because the couple small things I got there were in line with what I would have paid at local shops in my area. If you get into repairs and maintenance of vintage horns some would say it is pricey but I suspect it would be in line with what you would pay anywhere for that type of service. read more

Roberto's: Great selection, expert repairs, the go-to place for pros and beginners alike. Also sometimes quite rude to young people who don't know what brand of reed they want. The salesperson's attitude wouldn't have seemed as offensive if he hadn't sold the young person a box of alto reeds despite the fact that he'd asked multiple times for tenor reeds. Elitism and condescension aside, for one of the only woodwind shops in town, Robert's is pretty great. read more

I feel compelled to write a review today after what I consider to be exemplary customer service and support. I've been going to Roberto's for various reeds, mouthpieces, and small saxophone related items since it was a small woodwind shop on 48th st. Since the move to 46th st., Roberto's has increased in size, built up a high-quality inventory of horns and reeds/mouthpieces/ligatures and become THE one-stop shop for saxophone players. However, I never made a big purchase there until today. I've had a horn on consignment there for some time and decided to do a trade-in - I ended up trying Roberto's RW soprano (gold lacquer) and was pleasantly surprised by the intonation, warm sound and evenness throughout the horn. Roberto met with me directly, we discussed the trade-in, and I felt he gave me a very fair deal. A+ for both the RW soprano saxophone and the customer service. For players who can afford it, the Mark VI room is pretty amazing. I doubt there is a better saxophone-centric store in the world. read more
