JT is incredibly kind and well-intentioned, but the therapy felt one-dimensional. Sessions largely focused on validating feelings without providing structure, tools, challenge, or actionable guidance - all of which I repeatedly asked for. Given that this therapy was priced at the higher end of what we've seen, we expected a much deeper level of engagement and clinical depth. I consistently expressed that I did not feel understood, and that concern never felt meaningfully explored. The turning point came when JT continued asking the same questions and implied that I wasn't going deep enough. When I asked him to take a different approach and ask more thoughtful probing questions, he responded by asking me what I thought he should ask instead. That felt backwards. If he is the trained professional, I don't believe it should be my responsibility to determine how we get deeper in session. He also seemed dismissive of modalities like the Gottman Method and Nonviolent Communication, as well as the self-work I was doing independently. Despite repeatedly asking for homework or guidance between sessions, none was provided. We were looking for stronger direction and more skill-based, structured work, which is why we chose to move on. We're very happy with our new therapist, who also practices EFT but brings a broader, more versatile approach rather than relying on a singular method.

Our son saw John for two months and he's worse now than he was before he started. During the last appointment we had with our son, which was regarding a serious issue where our son had been incredibly disrespectful and dishonest, John said to us in front of our son, It's not like it was murder. I replied I didn't think we should use extreme examples to downplay the seriousness of our son's behavior. I came to find out later that while in session with our son he would share his opinion with him on how he thought certain things weren't a big deal and that our rules weren't appropriate, making comments like, And how old are you? when our son would share something with him. Which, of course, our son has thrown back in our faces that even his therapist agrees with him, further validating his disrespectful behavior toward us and his disdain for our rules that he thinks he doesn't have to follow at 16 years old because he thinks he's grown now. I don't care what John's opinion was/is about our parenting style and rules, it was not his place to comment on them to our son. Especially knowing the issues he has with female authority figures that we specifically told him we needed help with! John even told us himself that he told our son that mothers are just more protective, further pushing the gender norm narrative and patriarchal dismissive attitude toward women's actions only being emotionally motivated and not logically valid. I'm just beyond disgusted at how unprofessional he was and the further damage he caused to our son's sexist attitude and his relationship with us.

I saw Dr. Sheehan a couple of years ago (late 2015, early 2016), and signed up for approximately 12…read moreneurofeedback sessions. On the plus side, I was very impressed with Dr. Sheehan's involvement with current research and education on neurological effects in the brain. She really seems to know what she's talking about. On the other hand, I didn't particularly care for her bedside manner. I found her to be somewhat harsh and aggressive, which I found off-putting in a therapist. (As an example- at one point, in response to an anecdote I related to her from my childhood, she literally said, "Well, THAT was stupid". I still don't know whether or not that was an attempt to joke, but it seemed very judgmental as well as unnecessary- I can't change past behavior.) She also asked me to confirm that I was not suicidal, because she said that if I was, she would not treat me. I found that strange, as well. Also the fact that my name was never spelled properly on the receipts she gave me, although I provided her with the correction numerous times. it just added up to make me feel that I was not valued as a person and a patient. As far as the neurofeedback sessions went, I honestly don't know whether they did anything or not. They were quite expensive, however. But the biggest complaint I have is that the gentleman who applied the equipment was a minimum of 10 minutes late to all but two of the sessions. This was more frustrating because I was always early, resulting in me sitting around for at least 20 minutes before he even arrived to let me in the office. He was a very friendly person, but he had a lot going on in his life at the time and he also ended up having to reschedule several of our appointments. Again, I did not feel particularly valued, and because of that, I would not in good conscience recommend this office.
