I recently visited Roca's located in Radford, Virginia last Thursday night. I was visiting my daughter in college and we both craved some Mexican food. Roca's is literally maybe two miles away from RU Campus. When we arrived we were immediately greeted and sat down. The table was attached to a window and there were a few ants crawling around. We simply just killed them and moved on. It took nearly 10 mins for the server to come take our drink orders and another 5 minutes to actually get our drinks. They were not crowded at all. Rocas is a nice atmosphere with decent service and very poor Mexican food. I have tried it twice now and really want to like it, because it's close to home. First time I had Fajitas. They were tasteless and the meat was tough. This time I tried a combo thinking you can't mess up the basics of ground beef tacos and enchiladas. This food was no better and may have been worse. Not much flavor. Ground beef is so fine I swear they must have put it in a blender. It's mush. Add that to super watery and relatively flavorless salsa and I just can't do it. This is not going to happen to everyone but it's worth knowing if you care about other people. Or dogs. I have a disability. I have epilepsy and I have a signal dog that gives me a heads up when I'm possibly going to have a seizure. Long story short I was refused service tonight because of my JackRussell Terrior. Ruby was doing her job as she was trained to do and not bothering anyone. The manager asked me to provide "documents" to prove my disability. I could not comply because I don't carry medical records around with me and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) doesn't allow businesses to demand documents, ID cards, or vests. Before the ADA, seeing eye dogs wore vests but docs haven't been required for Service Animals for 10+ years. [The following was all done very politely. No one made a fuss or caused a scene. I doubt if anyone else even noticed.] When the manager came over to talk to us about my dog, he brought his phone to show me something that said, "Myth: Restaurants and businesses that sell or deal with food can legally deny access to a service dog team." I pointed out that the first word in that sentence was "myth" but he interpreted this to mean the opposite of what it said. Well, after a chuckle, I showed him an explanation of the ADA from the American Epilepsy Association. After reading this he consulted with his waitress who claimed to have a service animal for a psychological condition. She said I needed to show an ID card. In fact, the waitress was mistaken because she has a "support dog" which is not the same as a Service Animal and not covered by the ADA. But the manager believed his waitress with emotional issues rather than the American Epilepsy Association. So, he asked us to leave. I was humiliated and hungry but I didn't want to cause a commotion so we left and went to another restaurant. The end. read more

Well, I believe the curse on this piece of real estate has been lifted. Rocas Mexican Grill is actually really good. As already mentioned, the chips, salsa and ranch dip are delicious. Plus, free is always a plus. My dining partner ordered the chimichangas. I was treated to a taste and it was flavorful and fresh. I ordered a tamale and a chili relleno. Simple, yes but it's how a judge a Mexican place. The tamale was good but the chili relleno was outstanding. The crust was perfect, cheese and sauce also perfect. This is the best Mexican food around and the place is clean, like spotless. The wait staff dresses neatly and they all present themselves quite well. We liked everything so much, we decided to treat ourselves to a couple coronarita's. You should consider doing the same. Salud! read more

I traveled here for a week visit for work. I honestly did not expect much because its Blacksburg. It was cute on the outside and inside. Like I was actually surprised it was nice. Food was super fast and the guac was so good. They also had this sauce that comes with the chips, that I have never heard or seen before. Its white and its ranch and sugar. Friendly local place, on Lee Hwy, outside of Radford. Just the other side of the bridge over Bisset Park. Easy parking standard fare, we had the the pick 2 dinner and a Pescado Yucatán - Grilled, marinated Tilapia fish w/ grilled veggies, and some shredded Chicken nachos. This might be a 4 star in a more populated area, but for SW Virginia it's a 5. Complimentary chips and salsa also accompanied by some sort of mildly spicy Mexican ranch. I had a bacon wrapped shrimp dish that was excellent (see picture). It came with the house rice and a small salad. My girlfriend had a shrimp/beef/chicken burrito (Texano Burrito) that was huge and very good. The building is new which is refreshing, but we sat on the outdoor patio which was even more refreshing! Wow this place was amazing. I went in on a Friday night and was seated very quickly. The server was knowledgeable about the menu and recommended the "Tapatio" which is a combination of thinly sliced grilled chicken and ribeye smothered with grilled onion, mushrooms, and cheese sauce served with rice and beans. I was pleasantly surprised by their freshly made mojito which I had heard was their signature drink. Fun, fast, and friendly with great ambiance. We have eaten here about 5 times since it opened, two of which were carryout. All of these experiences were great. I get fajita nachos with chicken and it is some of the best i've had in the area. Ive heard some say they thought the food was either too spicy or too plain, but my family has always walked away happy! Staff is always friendly, prompt, and professional! Delicious! We went with 6 adults and two kids and everything was awesome-service, food, ambience-everything. The prices aren't bad at all. They have a big list of $7 dinners (I think you can see them on the menu in the picture I posted) and their portions are huge. My husband and I split the fajitas for one and we STILL had leftovers. Been here twice since it opened; once with my husband and recently brought visiting family to try it out as well. I really want to like it but it's just not quite there. The service is good, it's a beautiful and new building, and food is promptly served. I had the Pina Loca the first time and it was really good; however, before that was served I received a salad without dressing that had also been ordered and it didn't show up until 5 minutes after the salad did. Same thing happened with my MIL ordered the same meal yesterday - why isn't dressing served in the same timeframe as the salad delivery?? My MIL also attempted to order a Mojito (it's on the drink menu!) and was told she couldn't because the restaurant doesn't have mint currently. Odd. I had the signature marked steak item although I don't remember its official name, yesterday. It was greasy, fatty, with gristle throughout it. It was difficult to cut through and enjoy. It was thin as well, to the point that this cheap cut of meat was somewhat folded over in places to make up for its lack of quality. I ordered it medium and it was very overcooked as well (I would say it was "well" done, no pink throughout and kind of chewy/tough). If we come back I won't get the steak again. I should have known since the cut wasn't even listed on the menu (it was NOT worth what was paid for it, for sure and I didn't even bother to box it up to bring home with me...). Authenticity - I guess it is?? However... I have definitely had more authentic and better quality Mexican cuisine in San Antonio while we still lived there!!
