In 2022, 85 championship teams from across the world convened in Lynchburg, TN to compete for the…read morecoveted title of "The Jack Grand Champion," and judging by their website the Grand Champion team receives a $25K check - not bad!!! my husband and I completed our training and received our Kansas City Barbecue Society [KCBS] BBQ judge's certification and were excited to attend [not judge but attend] our first BBQ competition! It's held annually in October and is such a lovely drive up to Lynchburg! Gary N did a great job of accurately capturing the "feel" of the event in his numerous photos posted here! There are a lot of vendors set up for this event selling eats, t-shirts, and more. There's a large, covered pavilion where the judging happens, and spectators can watch from bleachers. I don't recall the number of judges but I do recall at least one local "celebrity" newscaster among the judges. The Styrofoam containers for judging are deftly prepared and rushed to the judging area with immense intensity - it really is something to watch, and the "food runner" will scream at you to "get out of the way" if they need to! Others referenced free samples, which wasn't the case on our visit, except for the international area. No guests/visitors get samples of the competition BBQ to my knowledge. If you want lunch, you'll need to get something from the vendors. However, the international area competitors did offer us ample samples of their BBQ. They were all very friendly, too! The competition area is fairly spread out, so wear comfortable shoes and the entryway is sloped, so there's that. It's free as far as I know, and everyone should attend at least one championship BBQ competition - the Jack Daniels event is a well-run, fun one to attend.

Coming from Chattanooga area we chose to take the scenic drive down the old highway from Monteagle through Sewanee. As you arrive into town you can start seeing the smoke and smelling the BBQ. This is a very small town but everyone seems to be selling parking. $5-$10 mostly. We parked very close to downtown. The square is fully covered with tents and vendors as you walk in, live country music is playing. All the downtown shops are open and plenty to explore and see in the town. However, food is in our mind and we continue down to the food tents and competition area. Lots of free samples, but I did not see any from the competitors which was a disappointment. But still plenty to see and try. They also have food instructions, vendor demos, Etc I do wish they would move this so it is not the same weekend as Tennessee vs Alabama. We left early to catch the game as I am sure many do. At the least put a big screen up for the crowd. Lynchburg is a great small town and one you should visit. Jack Daniels is a short walk and free tour. Great day.

Free event with love free music, food trucks, and chihuahua races…read more For the 2016 event (the 9th annual event) there were a few hours of live music by pretty good artists and bands. Ruth B was one of the more popular performers, and she and the other sI heard did great jobs. During this time, where wasn't too much going on, but there were some food vendors, trucks, and drink vendors (beer, frozen lemonade, etc.). There was also a first aid and veterinary first aid stand. Especially considering how many dogs there were at the venue, I thought the vet aid was a very thoughtful addition on the part of the event organizers. The event is sponsored and run by Hits 96, the Chattanooga radio station. DJs from the station were the emcees of the event. The main attraction is the dog races. There are 4 sets of bleachers for spectators, but that's not enough to support all the guests. Many of us were standing on the floor flanking the edges of the race lanes. Visibility is very low if you're in the back rows, especially since the competitors are so small, haha! The first round of races takes the longest time. Chihuahuas are split into groups of about 5 and are taken out onto the racing lanes by two of their owners/guardians. One guardian takes the pooch to the starting line, and the second waits at the finish line doing everything to get their dog's attention in order to coax it over the finish line first, thus winning the heat and moving on to the next round. Many of the dogs in the first round seem to be ambivalent, confused, or maybe a little nervous about the race. Only a few dogs each heat will actually make it across the finish line, many will scuttle around their starting line guardian unsure of what to do. First guardians, when sending their dog off at the signal, which do a small tossing of the dog in the right direction, which doesn't seem to faze the dogs. Even though athletic ability was a rare sight during this part of the event, it was fun to watch because of the funny situations that would come about (two dogs almost started getting it on!). Once their dogs fail in the first round, many of the owners and spectators will leave the event. By halftime after the first round, the crowd had thinned out a lot. My friends and I were able to have a much better view, and we were able to get some of the many empty spots on the bleachers. The third, fourth, and final rounds of the races are much more competitive. The dogs involved usually know the deal by now, and there's real excitement and anticipation to see which dogs will win. This half of the races also goes much faster, and not just because the dogs are actually running instead of dawdling. At the end, the fasted dog is crowned winner. There are also competitions for best team spirit and best costume (awarded during halftime, I believe). I know at least one of the prizes was tickets to see Adele. Parking nearby cost us $5, but the event itself is free. There were many, many dogs and not just chihuahuas. I brought my beagle mix, my sister brought her great dane mix, and I saw many other varieties. Suffice it to say: DON'T COME IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH DOGS. I didn't see any misconduct from any of the dogs, but some of the chihuahuas were yappy and aggressive with some of the other dogs. No fights ever broke out that I saw, which was good. All in all, it was a fun event, especially for a first timer like myself. Since I don't have any friends or dogs racing, I'm not sure if I'd go again, especially if it were out of my way and cost $ for parking. I'd recommend it for the fun spectacle, thought.

The staff gives friendly, superb customer service. Has a very happy, family feel. the offerings are incredibly diverse, ranging from some favorite bands to festivals full of acts I've never heard of, so there's definitely something for everyone! Todd Rundgren summed the magic up nicely last week: "I expect a dragon to come flying out any minute."

Bc of it's natural rock curves, visibility of the front stage is hit or miss, especially for the short girlies like me. Security and walking to the venue was easy. We stayed on the property in one of their yurts which made it all that more easy. They have large fields for camping on site too. Price point for the ticket felt a little up there but not terrible. And the Yurts were pricey but AC, running bathroom, very clean and cozy so can't complain. A couple of food trucks at the entrance and the doner kebab one was sooo good, we ordered from there twice in the night.

Local residents showed up in droves and genuinely valued -- and purchased -- handmade work. I made five to $7000 twenty years ago. Unfortunately, the show has changed significantly. It now draws large crowds, many of whom appear to be bused in from outside the area. While attendance is high, sales are not. The loyal local audience seems to have been pushed out by the increased congestion, and many no longer attend. Equally disappointing is the noticeable decline in handmade goods. Walking the show this year, I spoke with several talented artists who shared that they struggled to cover even their basic expenses and do not plan to return. It's a real shame that the show has declined like it has. It used to be a beautiful show and Franklin is a nice town.

The quality of booths on main looked like flea market vendors. What a waste of time and money
